I am thinking that this revised laptop could be announced towards the end of Q2 2008. The flat panels may have been ordered for Q3 in preparation for assembly and dispatch.

Here's hoping for an earlier announcement (Q2) so that my heart could be set at ease - and, I could make a decision on my purchase.

*sigh*
:apple::apple::apple:

I'm on the disappointed tip.

I mean, I still don't know they won't put ANY "off-board" graphics card in the MB, because the $1000 difference for the MBP just to get decent graphics is ridiculous. Even a 8400 would do, anything is better than the X666 crap.

I think it's funny how we call "low end" a US$1000 laptop. Talk about overpriced...

Computers for the "rich" of us.

I hate to say this but you kids never studied Apple WWDC releases or their current trends. WWDC is for SOFTWARE so I don't expect hard hardware announcements besides an iPhone and maybe a Touch. Apple is really going to press the new iPhone software, store and add-ons. Plus they're really pushing the iPhone toward overseas & businesses. So expect the Keynote to go toward those crowds.

One last thing, expect 10.5.3 update to come out during WWDC.

I hope this isn't true. After owning a PowerBook G4 12", a laptop whose wifi range could be measured in inches, I vowed to never buy another metal-encased Mac laptop. The PB couldn't see my house's wifi network in the basement; the new plastic-encased MacBook can see networks halfway across the neighborhood.

I really wish I got the MacBook instead of the MacBook Pro because of that. My nephews Macbook puts my MacBook Pro to shame in WiFi range.

I've got myself a little problem with the Macbook. I've been saving for ages and i've got enough for a new Mac yet can't decide if I should get the Macbook Black or one of the new iMacs. If the new Macbook's are coming soon theres surely no point?

Montevina

Looking back at how long it took Apple to switch to the Santa Rosa platform after it came out (took about a month), it looks like The next update for the macbooks will come around early July. :D Just about perfect timing for school.

this may mean nothing, since i've only been following this stuff for about a year. But it seems that apple likes to change what is on their homepage every 4-6 weeks, some products 8 weeks, leopard and iphone come to mind. just this dumb theory i have, new iphone announced in early june at wwdc, new iphone on front page for 6-8 weeks, something new announced then. this would likely be the macbooks. which would put them at a late july early august release. i also predict the new ilife suite then also.

we'll see.

I've been using a 12inch PB since September 05 and...

I know some people have reported this issue but, I have never had a problem finding a wireless connection. There have been occasions where I have only been able to get 3 or 4 bars, but I have never been in a situation where something is available that I can't see. I've been sitting in airports and able to see all the other machines whose owners don't know enough to lock down their connections. At my school, not only can I see the network, I can see every computer in the entire school that is connected to it. I have not been in a situation where my Windows using classmates can see something that I can't.

Well; I'm headed to college in late August and I'm hoping for a MBP update. I don't care how small or large it is as long as it seems useful to me...

..then again, the current MBP is plenty useful already XD

I'll see what goes on in the coming months.

All so confusing! I'm on the very verge of jumping from PC to Macbook, yet just when I'm about to enter my credit card details I read of upcoming updates, both in terms of spec and aesthetics. Meh. I guess I better get used to this sort of thing if I'm going Apple!

More like, a computer that lasts for the rest of us. I think the MB is a well built machine that's built better than the MBP in some regards. And the competition is offering the same thing for a slightly cheaper, or slightly more expensive price.

I think the best thing the comp offers is the ability to fully customize their machines. Instead of the "one size fits you because we said so" model that Apple has.

aluminum macbooks

I wonder how macbook would look like in aluminium...;)

I couldn't own a plastic book. It wouldn't last a month. I need industrial tools. I drop things. The only reason my Powerbook G4 has lasted so long is that it is aluminum.

Of course, I have had to have the hard drive replaced three times, among other things.

Always get the AppleCare...it's worth it, but wait till the limited warranty almost is up because then you get an extra year if you need all the repairs I have had to have done.

Right now, I can't read the letters on the keys, they have all been scratched off from typing....and only three years old, tsk, tsk.

Pro design

Sorry, but not going to happen.

When I switched to Mac from Windows after 20 years of computing, I had a Mac geek come to my house to give me a few tips on my new Powerbook G4. The first thing he did was pull out 4 stick on "feet" you can get at Radio Shack or other stores to put on the bottom of things. This guy was a pro.

He knew how they overheated. The batteries never got recalled on the 17 inch but he knew they still got hot.

From that time, I have had the stick on feet on the four corners of my box.

And when I use it, it's on a table or a lap wooden tray.

I think if there would ever be a design change in the aluminum Powerbooks, they would have raised corners for air circulation.

My adapter got so hot I have had it burn up.

The thing about laptops is the components are so close, they don't last as long if you are on them a great deal. They just burn out.

And they need to do something about the keys.....the letters scratch off from typing so much. Sometimes you do have to look at the keyboard.

That would be my two design suggestions.

Raised corners on the bottom for better air circulation and keys where the letters and numbers don't scratch off.

I love the 17 inch Powerbook.

Now I am spoiled and when I replace it, it will have to be with the next era of Powerbooks.

That no lie. Welcome to the club.:p

But the PC world has been this way for years, and still is.

In the PC world, though, you know when new Intel stuff is coming, and you can be sure of PCs with the new stuff coming out soon after.

Apple may take months before upgrading to current Intel parts (quad core in the Maxitower, and Penryn in the laptops for examples).

I am wondering how your PowerBook looks like. Aluminum dents very easily.
