Yea. Now but what headphones do I use?
The lightening pods won't work, because they have no 3.5mm.
They also don't work on my MacBook because the MacBook has no lightening.

Courageous would have been replacing lightening with USB 3.0.
One connector to rule them all. Mac, iPhone, Android, Windows PC.

Well missed that opportunity.
Won't be another one.
Courage.

So let me get this straight - we now have to carry around an adaptor AND a dock with us, just in case we might want to charge and listen to our iPhone at the same time. What about in car use?
The only Time i See myself listening and charging at the same time is in airports and on the plane. That's exactly when I don't have a dock available. And I see a lot of people doing that.

Aside of that I need now two earphones: with lightning in case I use only the phone and with 3.5mm jack in case I charge and listen.

Great.

I've never tried to listen to music while my iPhone is charging, never thought that was so common up until now of course.

Honestly, I personally prefer to keep my iPhone out of hands and out of use while it's charging.
Thought that was the best way to keep the wires from breaking and prevent overheating.

Edit - I cannot think of the restrictiveness knowing that the iPhone is connected to the charger on a wall/port somewhere and having earphones on, it'd require one to just sit around relentlessly and not even move the head too much.
But everyone certainly does have their own preferences so perhaps the future iPhones aren't for those? I mean if it ain't working for you, its best to switch to another no?

I do it daily sitting at my desk, and in my garage hooked up to a speaker system when im out there working.

It's a work-around NOT a solution.

Here's a solution for you. Don't buy an iPhone 7. Seriously. Skip a generation and wait until you acquired updated tech to live without a 3.5mm port. Apple is making a stand for progress. And they've decided where the future of audio technology is going to go. It is going to be a lot better. But with any shake up there is going to be some pain.

The iPhone 7 is at the bleeding edge of tech. And it seems that a lot of people need to take a step back from that edge.

Of course, from the original iPod days, Apple seems to be of the mind that

a. Everyone has tiny ears. With so many English working there, you'd think they'd know otherwise.
b. Nobody minds putting "buds" inside their ears. Personally I cannot stand them; probably my least favorite Apple-esque esthetic since that ridiculous round mouse.

Complete and utter fail. All they had to do is include a Lightning cable in the box with a passthrough connector, pretty much identical to what they've already included in the external battery case, like this:

Instead what we got was this:

Car use is the only valid argument with this whole mess. When I'm charging my phone, I'm either at work, or at home, both locations where I can either just use the speakers, use a bluetooth speaker, or use another device to listen to music (like my work computer). Luckily, I use Spotify (can't get iTunes on my work computers) so that's not a problem, personally.

Okay, so maybe you're out in public. Libraries, Starbucks, etc. If you're visiting these places for an extended period of time that would cause your battery to run out, you likely have another device with you, like a tablet or laptop to accomplish the task that brought you to the public place in the first place. Even if you're not. Even if you're reading a book and listening to music, it'd take a while for you to run out of juice.

The car problem makes sense, because besides the scenarios above, I charge in my car frequently, mostly to top it off from charging at home or work. If you don't have bluetooth, you can't make it happen without an adapter. But back when I had just a tape deck in the car and no aux connection, I needed an adapter. It wasn't the end of the world. I even used those wonky radio transmitters that pumped your music through a radio station. I needed an additional purchase to get the job done because I was using new technology.

I'm not saying this is an easy transition, but I think people are blowing this out of proportion. I can't see anyone who is charging and listening to wired music for a significant portion of their life who, with the purchase of either bluetooth headphones, a bluetooth car adapter, or one of these new Belkin adapters can solve the problem. Or the simplest solution of all. Just don't buy an iPhone 7. Get the 6S and wait for the 8.

Air travel.

Lucky me I can't imagine an scenario where I would need to charge the phone and listen to music with headphones at the same time.
i'll give you a simple real life scenario-

I work in an office and im desk based. Its not appropriate to upload my music to the company pc's and tbh I wouldn't want to - so because apple iPhone batteries are usually sh*t I have to have my iPhone 6 connected to power (usually the pc usb port) whilst i stream music to my earpods.

second scenario- i have the old factory radio cassette player in my VW car so i like to charge and connect my phone to the tape deck adapter for audio. cheap and cheerful.

So they removed the physical home button and headphone jack with a total of approximately 2.5 ccm of space with a solid state homebutton and a taptic engine with space requirements somewhat closer to 10 ccm because "space comes at a premium"? Sure, that makes so much sense!

AirPods, priced at $159 and similar in design to EarPods, are entirely wireless with no cord connecting the two earpieces and feature technology like gesture recognition, voice isolation, and more.

I wonder if AirPods have the same drivers as the EarPods. And if so, will the sound quality justify the price? I, for one, do not prefer EarPods when listening to my music.

I bet nobody is going to switch to Android over something as silly as headphone adapters or charging while listening.

I can't tell whether Phil Schiller actually believes the advice or suggestion he is giving is helpful to the consumer's needs, or whether he is being sarcastic. Either way, it's not a good response.

What if you want to... shock... be sitting in bed, USING the phone while charging and listening to music? Well, Belkin has that adapter...

I embrace the future, so I'll be using AirPods when they're available, but I recognize this won't work for everyone.

If you choose to buy an iPhone 7 without a 3.5mm jack and hope to use your existing 3.5mm jack headphones, then you are creating your own problem. There are alternate devices for you, or Apple provides (for free!) the adapter.

If you choose to use the wired Lightning earbuds and need to charge your iPhone at the same time, then Belkin just released a solution, although many feel that it's bulkier than it needs to be. However, it's designed to assist with charging, which means the iPhone will be stationary (plugged in to something) anyway, so the bulk should be a non-issue.

People are choosing to make a huff out of nuffin'. By this time next year, people will appreciate Apple's push forward with new tech. Had Apple held back while the rest of the industry moved forward, they would only complain about that. Apple just can't win, it seems.

And this is going to help me how, when I'm using this device in a car on a 12-hour (battery-draining) trip for both podcasts/music and GPS? This is my iPhone's #1 usage scenario. (My 2015 car doesn't have bluetooth, by the way.) I'm not doing anything hastily, but this is precisely this kind of customer-bullying and taking-for-granted and accessory-marketing baloney that will very likely move me to Android. Grr!!!! As another angry Apple-lover pointed out elsewhere on this forum, why not do away with the alphabet as well? It's analog, inefficient, and _thousands_ of years old.

It didn't take "courage" to make this decision. It took downright arrogance. I've been using nothing but bluetooth headsets for many years now-- I was an early adopter. But.... What about cars?
