Car use is the only valid argument with this whole mess. When I'm charging my phone, I'm either at work, or at home, both locations where I can either just use the speakers, use a bluetooth speaker, or use another device to listen to music (like my work computer). Luckily, I use Spotify (can't get iTunes on my work computers) so that's not a problem, personally.

Okay, so maybe you're out in public. Libraries, Starbucks, etc. If you're visiting these places for an extended period of time that would cause your battery to run out, you likely have another device with you, like a tablet or laptop to accomplish the task that brought you to the public place in the first place. Even if you're not. Even if you're reading a book and listening to music, it'd take a while for you to run out of juice.

The car problem makes sense, because besides the scenarios above, I charge in my car frequently, mostly to top it off from charging at home or work. If you don't have bluetooth, you can't make it happen without an adapter. But back when I had just a tape deck in the car and no aux connection, I needed an adapter. It wasn't the end of the world. I even used those wonky radio transmitters that pumped your music through a radio station. I needed an additional purchase to get the job done because I was using new technology.

I'm not saying this is an easy transition, but I think people are blowing this out of proportion. I can't see anyone who is charging and listening to wired music for a significant portion of their life who, with the purchase of either bluetooth headphones, a bluetooth car adapter, or one of these new Belkin adapters can solve the problem. Or the simplest solution of all. Just don't buy an iPhone 7. Get the 6S and wait for the 8.

I listen while charging all day at work. I have bluetooth in my car but in 2016, the kia soul still has crumby bluetooth quality. i have some lg tones and the quality there sucks as well. I use aux in my car while charging. I could play though usb with the lightning cord, but i dont want to have to mess with the radio and phone syncing with one another. I just want to play from my phone as a standalone device like i have for the last 6 years.

I'm not railing on the new phone however, I was waiting to see the 7 before I upgraded from my 6s to the SE and now i am completely confident in that purchase.

A lot of pissed off people that don't even own the device ITT.

If you can't live without charging and using connected headphones at the same time, then don't buy it. Move on. Quit wasting your time crying about it.

No, that or simply standing up and changing brands would require courage. Much easier to whine tiny rants. And feel better about yourself in the process. A two-fer!

It's amazing how almost everyone here all of a sudden must routinely charge and listen to music at the same time.

Here's a solution for you. Don't buy an iPhone 7. Seriously. Skip a generation and wait until you acquired updated tech to live without a 3.5mm port. Apple is making a stand for progress. And they've decided where the future of audio technology is going to go. It is going to be a lot better. But with any shake up there is going to be some pain.

The iPhone 7 is at the bleeding edge of tech. And it seems that a lot of people need to take a step back from that edge.

"Leading edge of tech?" Phone with less than 2000mAh battery, no wireless charging, no quick charging, proprietary NFC, 750p non-amoled display?

Pretty much all airplanes have now usb or 110v power outlets on the seat and I always charge my phone while listening to an audiobook and I prefer noise cancelling headphones like the Bose. That is now not possible anymore because I likely eont lug a dock around. But I'm sure there will be soon a cheap small lightning pass through adaptor on eBay for that.

I bought my first Bluetooth headphones two months ago. Haven't looked back. Cables feel all wrong now.

I like good audio, and I can't hear any difference in quality.
Welcome to the club!!! People saying Bluetooth audio has lower quality because the specs says so, but their ears are not so sensible to feel difference and they listening to crappie 48bit mp3 :) No seriously I have the Sony MR1BT and puuurfeect, no cable tangles, no issue, I can let,you phone on my desk while going to pee with headphone, just FREEDOM... Only side effect.... 30hours autonomy...(Single charge) Mou hahaha

As an engineer I understand the need to remove the headphone jack. However, I don't think that it is a valid decision when you can't even deliver on the promise of a wireless future yourself.

How much did those airPods cost again Phil? Ridiculous.. I understand that Apple is a luxury brand and therefore the prices are high, but this is way too much. Let's just hope they'll stick in your ears.

Secondly, I've had friends with loose lightning connectors due to charging it often. I wouldn't find it surprising when a month from now people are having issues with damaged phones due the the dongle they provide (really? providing a wire? Sounds like you're courageously sticking to your vision of a wireless world Apple). I hope they thought of this, but it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't, since Tim doesn't fire people for poor design, examples:

1. Charging the magic mouse
2. Charging the Apple Pencil
3. Putting a microphone on the top/back of the iMac, especially stupid when introducing continuity at the same time

These bozo engineers would not have been around long with Steve as CEO

They have a charging dock that has a built-in 3.5mm jack. And they created a marketplace for 3rd-party solutions. Belkin themselves just released a solution, and they stated that they worked closely with Apple. I think that's worthy of mention that Apple is fostering a larger market rather than trying to offer every possible solution themselves.

If Apple worked with Belkin on this, then they must not like Belkin very much. There's a far better solution which Apple has already provided in other equipment. If this adapter did other things, like support two Lightning headphones so two people can plug in and listen at the same time, then I'd say it was a good idea. But it doesn't and it isn't.

It's amazing that you overlook very simple solutions.

From Apple:

From Belkin:

... and that's just one day after the phone was announced.

You're missing the point. If Apple had included a set of AirPods in the box it would be one thing if a customer wanted to listen through wired headphones and charge at the same time.

But they didn't. They include Lightning headphones in the box. Apple is encouraging the use of wired headphones. And there are legitimate times when the iPhone needs to be plugged in and listen at the same time. Airplanes immediately come to mind, as well as any travel scenario you can think of -- planes, trains, or automobiles.

So not, this is the dumbest, most out of touch thing Phil could have ever said. He's gone full Steve Balmer at this point.

I'm less concerned about listening to music & charging, than I am with sitting on a conference call in an airport and not being able to charge while I'm on the call, unless I put it on speaker phone for everyone to hear.

Many customers who routinely charge their iPhones while also listening to music have been questioning whether that usage scenario will possible sans headphone jack, and as it turns out, Apple has a solution.

This isn't a solution. This is just courageous and utter ********, served in an ice cream cone.

I had a faint hope that if they were going to remove the headphone jack (okay, fine, I'll give it to you that it's an ancient tech where innovation should occur, even though "it just works"), they would have added wireless charging, or some ACTUAL no additional cost solution. But yeah, silly me for thinking that.
