I remember back in iOS (7?) there was so much white/blank space and everyone including myself complained. Also, why is the music logo flat but the App Store icon look 3D/bubbly?
Edit: After closer inspection the music icon does seem to be somewhat 3D.

I mean, it would make sense.
tvOS got a facelift in 2019, macOS in 2020, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all for iOS to be next.
The default look of iOS has basically been the same since 2013, and 8 years sounds about right for a new coat of paint.
Not expecting anything too huge, just a design refresh.
When some people hear “design refresh,” they think it means a complete re-thought of how the entire operating system works. I don’t expect that. I still expect the same grid of icons, just a new grid of icons.
Just please, apple, please, give us some new UI sounds and ringtones and text tones to pick from.

Finally. The flat design trend of the last 8 years has been awful. Glad to see some depth returning to the UI.

All that being said, the shadows on the App Store icon are a bit much. The Music icon looks fantastic though!
Same. This is the first time in many years I am happy with the change in design philosophy of either iOS or MacOS. We live in 3d world and the steady drive to remove all traces of dimensionality in the OS design has been maddening. Really hope this will affect the Mac OS design as well. I am sure none of the people responsible for the flat design ever had to do IT support for their elderly relatives or friends and explain to them that something which in no way looks like a button actually IS a button and stuff will happen if you click on it.

yeah, that ultra flat look from like early/mid-2010s is now borderline cringe.

tried way too hard to look ‘new and improved’ — and in 2021 it’s like looking at man bun.

the new style is a throwback to the ‘ugly on purpose’ early 00’s days which comes across now as humble, understated and self-aware.
They only did it cause people kept crying iOS needed a redesign for no reason. Flat was always terrible. Change for the sake of change nothing else

It wasn’t for “no reason”. They needed a redesign because skeuomorphism was *incredibly* dated for the 2010s. Remember that we didn’t get the current, flat look until 2013.

Now I’m not saying that the redesign they went with is better or worse than the pre-iOS 7 design as that’s purely subjective. But it was much more modern (at the time).

Now I believe it’s time for a new redesign as the overly flat style is now also dated. This is a step on the right direction assuming that it’s going to be applied system-wide and isn’t just a design choice for these 2 specific apps.

I love the design I think they are going back to skeuomorphism, really hated the lazy flat design
Really hated the skeuomorphism. That ugly bookshelf , that really ugly notes app, the curtains In that photo app,...

doesn’t Have to be as as flat as now but if you look at the older iOS skeuomorphic look, it still looks like It belongs in the 90s
