They also said there were "Fiscal Reasons" (likely a renegotiation of pricing with Intel) for the delay. NO ONE has bothered to drill-down into THAT statement. Why?

Go back and read the next paragraph in the article. The fiscal reasons have absolutely nothing to do with Apples money ( or Intel ) .

Customers of big ticket items do fiscal planning . Folks who are going to write major purchase orders in the second half of this year need to know now. Apple hope some of them by iMac Pro but some are simply going to buy something else . Apple benefits by not pissing them off so that next time they have money they might buy. If Apple makes their job super hard they won’t.

I want the monitor option Apple comes out with to have features learned from the Microsoft “Studio”. OMG, that free-floating 28” Ultra + display is gorgeous. And how it goes down to a 20 deg tilt for pen work on the screen - It could make me switch sides. But Microsoft put last-Gen Mobile graphics in it. Bad choice for a desk top that prices like Apple’s, up to $4000. But Apple, watch out - Microsoft is learning the game of high-end premium hardware.

Apples latest release clearly shows it has no interest in Nvidia by ONLY supporting egpu’s from AMD. Which is stupid, but then again so it totally ignoring and abandoning the Pro market for several years, deciding you should look at it when the public outcry becomes more public and theirs a risk of damage to the brand... again this is clearly obvious by the fact they have only been designing a new machine since last year! Despite the trash can being FIVE YEARS old now!

In fact this story is yet another example of Apples greed, because it has all that money, and yet can’t even employ enough people to develop multiple devices at once! Thus making cut backs and more profits. And it’s clear the iPhone is THE number one product for all its development efforts bar none, along with Apple Warch straps at obscene costs, they charge £150 for a simple plain ordinary leather one! I could get some exclusive designer luxury one for the same cost!!
I would be VERY surprised if NVidia support isn't announced in a later macOS Update.

Haha, way to Osbourne oneself... While ARM might possibly be the granddaddy of all processors, good luck getting the apps updated by then. And good luck being so late and asking people to invest to a sunsetting Intel unless they really, really have to. At which point you gotta ask how did those people survive that far.

More seriously, though, I'm getting tired with Apple. Partly for personal reasons and bad luck (what comes to upgrading computers), it appears I better go concentrate on something else than computers for a while. Work will give me a 'puter anyhow and in personal life I can figure out something else to do for the next n years.
I honestly believe that Apple will start supporting Desktop and Laptop systems in both Intel and ARM variants. Products without "Pro" in the name will become ARM, and will run IOS/X for the Mac/iOS side, and Windows 10 for ARM for the Windows side. The iPad Pro will also go into this category, methinks.

Conversely, "Pro" Products (iMac Pro, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro) will stay Intel for the foreseeable future, but, like now, will sport more and more powerful ARM helper SoCs.

So here's a question. These are pro machines. That means that they are for making money with. The rearranged deck chairs that you reference have been making money (and lots of it for years now) why does Apple need to do it any differently? Pro's only goal is to make money, not have highest tech or style. If standard design that costs less gets that done why do it different?
As I said, PLENTY of people make money every single day with the 2013 Mac Pro. Depending on the application, they are fine machines.

But Apple DOES realize they under-thought and over-designed the 2013 Mac Pro; so let's just all chill and see what they come up with. Who knows? Even YOU might be pleasantly surprised.

But in case you like the software but not the hardware next time around, there's always Hackintoshes...

That last MacPro was released spring 2014, it's a little over 4 years old - stop that lying with over 6 years.

The Mac Pro was released in December 2013. It will not be updated until sometime in 2019. If it comes in at the beginning of the year, it'll be over five years since it was released. Six years if it comes in December. Five or six years, either one is way too long to go without an upgrade.

Sadly this makes me wonder if a PC is best for me. :(

Nowhere have I heard Apple talk about NVIDIA cards - which is needed GPU rendering in Octane and Redshift for my motion graphics work.

It feels silly to wait a year to find out the Modular Mac Pro doesn’t work with NVIDIA cards anyway.

Motion Graphic Professionals need NVIDIA support Apple!
I predict NVidia will be back with the eGPU-wave. They just started with AMD Support first, because they already HAVE those Drives qualified for use with High Sierra. I would be VERY surprised if NVidia support isn't added later this year.

I hate to admit it, but I may play into Apple's hand on this one. I have a computer that needs to be replaced soon, and I may go for the current iMac Pro instead of waiting.

I weighed up the iMac Pro before I bought this secondhand 2013 Mac Pro. It was twice the price. It's a decent whack faster too of course. But for design work, in an environment where 2 others are quite happy on their 2013 Mac Pros, I thought another one of those was a better choice. Prevented "new Mac jealousy" from the others too.

I'm in Australia and the prices of specced up iMac Pros or Mac Pros over here could make you weep. So when I discovered that OWC sell secondhand Mac Pros - which are identical to the model that Apple still sell - at half the price we'd pay for them over here, I was sold.

I'd GLADLY take the same old cheese grater design with a new motherboard chipset, TB3, Titan X, etc.. Just release the thing already!

I couldn't dream of using the cheese grater. Silver instead of Space Grey? You've got to be kidding me!

That's ****ing BS that they "still don't know how our users use our computers". What have they been doing for the last 9 years? Oh right, phones. It's a g**#amn shame they can't come to terms with Pro users' needs in a short amount of time and make that computer. How long have people on THIS MacRumors forum (specifically the Mac Pro section) be crying for a new cheesegrater/5,1 machine. A desktop computer isn't hard to design. The trashcan is trash and never should have been made. Pro's don't give a crap about desk space or how pretty it looks for the most part. Ports, easy expansion, long unit life, the ability to put new cards and multiple drives, preferably easy chip updates too. HOW CAN ANYONE AT APPLE NOT KNOW THIS?? BUILD A NEW 5,1 and we will buy it.

Take's time to engineer out all the possible user post purchase upgrades paths, Tim don't want loose a single cent be prepared...

Q-6

Does anyone find the writing on Macrumors wordy and redundant? I could have written this article with half the words and twice the effect. Don’t know where the authors get their training, but unnecessary repetition and details are just more laborious to read than helpful or clear.

Maybe I missed something, but in the original article it was alleged that the "pro workflows" Apple was trying to understand involved Garage Band, Logic, and FCP X. Maybe there was a sideways nod at Adobe.

I make a few bucks here and there with my 5k iMac and the Adobe suite, so my "pro" opinions aren't important, but my son in NYC pays his mortgage as an editor. The three post houses he's been at are all Apple-based and they don't use FCP X and they don't use Logic. They use Avid, Pro Tools, and the Adobe suite. Two of them were heavy into front-end/back end with lots of cMPs under the desks and in the back room. And he tells me he doesn't see anything different when he travels around the country.

So let's hope that "pro" doesn't mean "only Apple 'pro' apps." But to me, it sure seems that way.

As evidenced by their complete dismantling of what had been a pretty darn good server system (wow I miss 10.6.8) Apple has zero interest in provided back-end functionality for their systems, even pro machines. So, whatever other features it has, unless it can be fully integrated with and managed by with other systems (OS/file system, security, hardware) their "Pro" machines will not be of much use to PROfessionals with more than a small handful of staff.

Apple is this hard we need something like the 2009-2012 systems look at the hp z and dell 76xx systems and do better you can use the intel mb and squeeze it into about 4u of rack space 1 or 2 cpu setup at least 384max ram 768 to 1024 would be nice at least 2 16x slots and 2 8x slots and drive bays many of us use a combination of 2.5ssd and 3.5 7200 drives the 3.5 are for space apple something we need and like to have in the case most of my clients have between 6 and 30 tb of files they need local but not fast and several hundred gb they need fast

what about if apple did what wacom tried to do with the pro engine. where you had a display and the engine slotted into the back. apple could sell a 4k and 5k display then the engine separate that locked into the back. if the display is separate of the engine then upgrading the engine every year should drop the price since your not paying for the display like with an imac. You could even have a low cost engine that you could increase the power later by using a egpu connected to the engine. Using a slotted engine product keeps the whole thing together but as a larger upgrade rather then many small upgrades of a modular tower. I do think wacom's pro engine is a good idea it just fits the IMAC design better and by a better company.

Interesting thought. Is it possible they’ll bring back a rack-mounted option? Seems improbable, but what could be more modular?

Naw, too much to hope for. Next thing you know, I ‘ll be entertaining thoughts of a Mac X.

I’m thankful they are taking their time to interview pro users, get feedback, and make it right. It would be easy to rush a standard desktop tower, it’s not like it would be hard to build. Sounds like they want to make something special. Kudos

I'm glad they're putting a lot of effort into this. I don't want them to rush it, and it seems like they may actually be choosing function over form this time around.
Hows does the worlds most valuable company have such a hard time keeping it's pro machine current.....It will be 6 YEARS in 2019. How can anyone accept this?
[doublepost=1522981924][/doublepost]
Bizarre to imagine the development gap in-between 2013 to 2019 for the pro users... Unacceptable.
I wonder what exactly the mac pro team does day to day? nothing?

I hope the Mac Mini gets discontinued. It’s so niche that people get upset when it’s not updated. Would be better just to kill it off

I accept it because it is what it is. Will crying about it change anything? No. They listened, they apologized, and now they are rectifying it. What else can you ask for in life. God knows I would never pick a Windows machine, too many epic fails there

If this new Mac Pro doesn't accept off-the-shelf components for upgrading the RAM, HDD, GPU, and CPU, then they might as well not bother. Thats what made the old cheese grater Mac Pro a great Pro machine.

And please, please let there be room for at least one 3.5" HDD. I know Apple wants to SSD everything, but mechanical drives are still massively superior for mass file storage.
