Have you seen the monitor market lately? There's literally nothing worth buying aside from 42" LG OLED's, Apple's OEM stuff, or the monitors that use the Samsung QD-OLED panel (Alienware, et al.)

Everything else is trash. There's so much marketshare potential here.

True, but Apple prices themselves out of large segment of the market. If the Studio Display was $1299 instead of $1599, they would gain marketshare. But instead, Tim's more interested in profit margins.

It’s amusing how someone will start a rumor about an allegedly upcoming Apple product, get it wrong and say it’s been delayed or pushed back, making it sound like Apple failed at a product they never announced. Rather than saying, hey my first rumor was mistaken, let me try again…
I remember way back in the day when this happened...and then the "delayed" products were announced less than a week later...oops

Since the moment this rumor started it has seemed incredibly unlikely. This product is not a replacement for the studio display. It either replaces the pro XDR, or is a middle option. But it will cost significantly more than the already expensive studio display, placing it in a very pro realm.

ASD is on the market for less than a year, so this isn't all that surprising.
I wonder when they will make an updated Pro Display XDR - 32 inch with much more zones and presumably 120hz. That would be a instant buy assuming my M1 Max can drive that.

Those were updates to a well-established product line and sure to come out, only question was the exact date.

Not possible/questionable/fantasy products with uncertain specs and an uncertain place in the lineup like the subject of this thread.

The opportunity of writing 100 "Apple TV Set made by Loewe Opta -- What we know" / "Mac Studio vs. the 100% certain to come out next week iMac Pro 2" / "AR/VR glasses delayed" posts or articles is just too tempting.

8K video with the Nikon Z9, FujiFilm X-H2, Sony a1 and a7RV, Canon R5/5RC and I'll reckon Panasonic and others will all follow suit this year, the Mac creative market necessitates an 8K/60Hz (minimum) along with 4K/120Hz (minimum), 2,000-niit, HDR monitor for FCP. My expectation is that Apple will deliver on this sooner than later this year, it's truly that simple.

Maybe first you need to release a Mac that can drive a 5k@120hz.
They can probably do this by using two Thunderbolt channels internally to get the necessary video bandwidth. Much like the original 5K iMac was technically two video controllers running two virtual 2.5K screens on one 5K panel.

Frankly the only thing I don’t like about it is the Smart TV features. I hate smart TV’s. Who knew I’d be a tech Luddite working in IT at the old old age of 31 😂

I'd like smart TVs if they were actually good. I have some really nice LG TVs the are hobbled by WebOS, terrible and touchy navigation, very little onboard memory and storage to cache content, and lack of any hardware to natively transcode h.265 making al the apps painful to use. Which is why I just put Apple TVs on all of them and call it day.

You can run 2 x Pro Display XDR at full 6K 60Hz via a single Thunderbolt cable today (using a Caldigit Thunderbolt 4 dock) with an M1 or M2 Pro/Max/Ultra machine. So it's definitely possible to do 1 x 6K 120Hz based simply on that.

If anyone needs proof, look at this product page and scroll all the way down to the display table https://www.caldigit.com/thunderbolt-station-4/

You'll see 2 x Pro Display XDR supported on this dock but only when connected to an M1 to M2 Pro/Max/Ultra machine.

I caught your wink so this comment is not aimed at you, but I am getting tired of the you tube tech reviewers raving about this monitor as if they have used it (looking at you Max Tech) but in reality is based purely on Samsung's word and reading specs. To my knowledge no one outside of Samsung has actually used or tested one besides walking past it at CES 2023. We don't even know the price yet, but hope/assume it will be less. Shrugs. And, great, they copied the Studio display's look. I typically dont buy knock offs, but will reserve judgement for when it is actually released and tested and priced.

Generally agree, but in this case I think the presumptions are reasonable. Seeing it at CES shows that they are capable of manufacturing it, and at least at some level have it functional for display, so it's not just an unsubstantiated press release.

On your other points, I think the key is to remember that being a 220 ppi display really pins this as a Mac-focused product. And if you are catering to Mac users, matching the aesthetic of what they already have is a huge bonus. (Remember how much reviews panned the LG UltraFine 5K for this?) "Copying the look" is a GOOD thing here.

Likewise, because of this, it's safe to assume the price will be lower than the Apple Studio Display. If they priced it at parity with the ASD, nearly every buyer who didn't need the S9's input flexibility would simply go with the proven first-party option. The S9 has to be cheaper, or it doesn't have a market at all.

I do wonder what'll happen to the Pro Display XDR if they don't release another display in the next couple of years. Will they discontinue it or just continue to sell a display from late 2019 for original price in 2024?
Apple doesn’t usually drop the prices of products. They keep the price the same to hold a price point in the line. Normally they would update the product to maintain it’s value proposition but they seem to lose interest in some products and those get stuck.

Maybe they are going to design it so that you don't have to be standing up to use it ... or can lower the height.
