No you shouldn't. Like separate iPods, separate readers are obsolete technology. You wouldn't buy a separate digital photo frame anymore. It's over. Multi-purpose is here to stay and rule.

Let him do whatever is best for him

I'm not sure it's a very smart move to be releasing all their products(iphone, iPad and macbook pro) within the same quarter, even if it's just before the holiday season... People like to spread their costs throughout the year. If you're well off, great, you can afford your entire apple fix in october, but for the aspirational lot, it's a better proposition to have a device released every quarter or two...

If you're an Apple fan on an upgrade year, this october is going to be very expensive...

Well, they might have no other choice. They lag behind on phone and tablet market (ok, iPad 4 not so much, but ipad mini now looks like 2gen behind new nexus 7), so if they would wait for like 6 month....they might lag so much behind in share market, that they would become niche product like mac devision.

You don't seem to understand much - the original poster stated his problems with eye fatigue when reading books on the mini. Although the functionality of an e-ink reader is extremly limited to its purpose, a definite advantage it HAS for those people with sensitive eyes is the display in comparison to backlit LCD/LED or whatever. Do your research, google is your friend. Nichts für ungut, Gudi.

Seems to me it makes more sense to split these in to separate events. Unless Apple is planning some big event for new Macs.

Introducing the new iPads and their upgrades and new iPhones and their upgrades, and lets be honest these events are mainly upgrades now, it would make sense to do it here and leave late October maybe for something else...like a 'new' product.

Honestly...

I do not know why the "event".

There are no new products, just new aspects. Besides that, everything has leaked already.

Where is the innovation? It passed away.

iPad Mini with retina and fingerprint sensor please. That way I don't have to worry about the GF seeing I'm looking at porn on the iPad. She won't be able to unlock it.

I don't mind my current mini for reading but an improvement will hopefully mean I can read longer without any eye fatigue

You should try out a separate e-ink reader device in this case.

Exactly. It helps a lot and they have such great battery life. I do most of my heavy reading on a Nook Simple Touch. Love it. The Simple Touch can accept non drm epub books which is nice edge over a Kindle.

But if I um, [cough] acquire [cough] a .mobi file, I use Calibre to convert it- works great.

I rarely do any heavy reading on my 4th gen iPad.

Yes they are just new aspects/upgrades.

As for innovation...Blah blah blah. Innovation takes time.

See the last 10 years and how often a 'new' product comes out. We're right at the cusp of that now.

Sept event

Apple will need to bring something "new" to the table at the Sept. event since they are only relaunching last years model iPhone. Lets hope new iPad Minis make their debut with retina.

Interesting. I wonder if this marks a sea change in Apple's view of media events. Fewer events with a lot more products in each event. I guess it would make sense to bring all the iOS devices together in one event if there is nothing radically new coming out. Plus why wait another 6 weeks to announce the iPad at a different event. We all know it's coming so why delay.

Yes, with its less than stellar battery life, wi-fi issues, and phantom touch inputs they've really given Apple something to aim for.

Always be careful as an Apple user to make fun of other products wifi issues, I had to learn it the hard way ... ;) Otherwise, I agree!

He also stated his desire for an iPad mini with Retina. Nothing else.

It's not his decision, the market decides what is supposed to be best for everyone. I loved jump & run games, but it's all 1st person shooter now. I love skeuomorphic design, but it's all gonna be modern UI in two weeks.

When was the last major announcement of a new e-ink reader?
When will be the next?

E-ink readers are a very specialized product, but as long as Samsung, LG & Co. don't invent a phone/tablet display which can switch between backlit LCD/LED/OLED and e-ink, they are here to stay with their crazy battery life and "like a printed book page" screens, believe me. And the solution to the eye fatigue of the OP simply isn't Retina – if he/she has these issues, e-ink is the way to go for an avid reader. Love my 185 gram Kobo Glo for reading, love my iPad for everything else... :)

Dude, check some real tests and you will se that battery life is on par with ipad mini.
Example:
""CNET, in their battery test, which plays a video at equal and measured brightness levels across devices, found the following results for the new Nexus 7 :

Video battery life (in hours) : Google Nexus 7 (2013) 11.5, Apple iPad Mini 12, Google Nexus 7 (2012)10.1."

Apple is known for wi-fi issues (last one being new mac air) so dont even go there.

Dont spred lies just to defend apple.

If iOS 7 isn't on this new iPad then I will wait. I don't want to spend a wad of money on a device that could be redundant or slow because of iOS7. I was already bitten once by Apple with their quick upgrade of the iPad (3rd Gen) to iPad (4th Gen)

The only thing Apple needs to do is to release a retina mini. Other than screen density, I can't think of any aspect of the N7 which is particularly compelling.

Yea, no. Not happening.

Aside from the couldn't happen because iOS 7 for iPad will not be GM by Sept. 10th..

There is the wouldn't happen because Apple is not dumb, they would never announce/release so many new products at the same event.

iPhones need time to gain press, build anticipation, Pre-order like mad, and launch.

Then, a few weeks later, Apple can do it all again with another event for iPad & Macs. Hype, Pre-order, launch.

If you haven't figured it out yet, there is absolutely positively 100% no chance in the world that Apple announces new iPhones & new iPads on the same day.

Zero.

Stop using logic. :)

They won't announce iPads and then delay the release as then no one will buy existing inventory. It would kill sales of existing product. Sure they can draw down inventory beforehand, but it still would kill traffic in retailer showrooms.

Apple won't make that mistake.
