The only thing Apple needs to do is to release a retina mini. Other than screen density, I can't think of any aspect of the N7 which is particularly compelling.

Some spec bumps are also needed for ipad mini. Nexus have quad core processor with better graphics and 2G RAM (ipad mini have 512mb).

But the major thing is display. Here is where nexus 7 really shine. And also, i like ipad minis bigger display. So if Apple puts retina on new mini, i will get one.

Also, gone is lagy android os. Now they are almost (but not there yet) as smooth as iOS.

I for one always thought there would be iPads on the same day.

Simply for the reason that the iPad mini is due it's yearly update and that some people are reading Apple it's 'last rights'. Apple may want to prepare and secure anticipation for the coming holiday seasons with a full and bank busting line-up. This is not to say that all products will be available on the day.

In short come out with guns blazing to silence the naysayers who say that "Apple is falling behind" and that they cannot innovate Phil Schiller's donkey anymore.

Also more importantly, satisfy shipping goals, thus keeping profit projections and shareholders happy.

Why would the iPad mini need a quad core processor? Of course if it gets retina the specs will be upgraded to support the display.

Yeah, I think the usual spec bumps are a given (and necessary to drive a retina screen, naturally) but, just as the N7 mark II is an iterative (though impressive) spec bump it's really only the screen density that marks it out from the iPad mini.

Once the mini gets a high density display it will become a very attractive device.

I do not know why the "event".

There are no new products, just new aspects. Besides that, everything has leaked already.

Where is the innovation? It passed away.

Nothing has leaked other than rumored case designs.

They advertised new multitasking on iOS and more RAM and more cores on processor would help with that matter. Down side of that is, that battery life would go down.

But yes, more than quad core, i would like to see retina and more ram.

For sure, i am delaying my purchase of new tablet, because i wanna se what will apple produce. I like ipad minis smaller form factor, so i would like to get one. But current display resolution on ipad mini just doesnt make me wanna buy it.
If they put retina on it i am sold for sure.

new iPad in September? My wallet is not yet ready for this lol Better start saving now cuz that retina mini will be sold out quickly :D

Nowwww, i'm no wishful fanboy or anything who would think anything to give myself warm fuzzy feelings about the short term future, but...

I think Apple will have a singular announcement of the ipad and iphone since they are both basically the same thing running iOS and this in turn, will get the product announcements the hell outta the way, help inventory/speculation/stock and make room for a bigger announcement right after in the october-november time frame. What you may ask?

...A freaking apple tv. Yes. A FREAKING APPLE TV. ZOMG!!!!

No but seriously. Why separate events for these two products when they really are almost the exact same thing? Make it all one big a** event and make a huge internet splash with it being all everyone talks about. We still have macs that haven't been announced and god knows what else. Apple TV could happen either as a refresh of the little hockey puck thingy or the big 4k panel one. Or maybe the smart watch? That would be insane if everyone wasn't even hyping the apple tv anymore and yet, Apple stepped in and just announced the damn thing. Talk about doubling down on secrecy

It's Bloomberg. That should have been enough to discount the rumour.

Not that Apple couldn't do one big event with staggered release dates, but it does prefer the media to be all-iPhone for weeks afterwards.

Once the click-bait died down, it turned out Samsung phones and Google tablets were a bust. There's nothing out there driving Apple to do anything spectacular, sadly.

Apple doesn't seem to get the bigger phone screen (very sadly) — take that away and you are down to goldmember and a a speed bump. Decent, but nothing to write about.

I can't imagine another Siri-arsed feature like fingerprint scanner is going to get anybody excited, most especially if it goes to the cloud for every Bit, the way Siri does. Disaster.

iPad 9.7" does seem pedestrian enough, these days, to include with iPhone & iPods (even if it had fingkey-dink). A speed-bumped iPad mini could jazz up a Mac Pro/iMac/MacBook Pro event a month later, even without retina.

It's not Apple's style to retina the 7.9" this year, unless they make it 16:9 and reduce the pixels by 30% like that other company. Like larger phone screens, Apple just doesn't seem to get 16:9 tablets. While cameras seem unwilling to shoot 16:9 stills, there's no driver for iPads to change aspect ratio (even if Apple did get around to it for the phones).

As for last minute rumours - keep an eye on fireball, his out-of-the-blue comment about 'it would be nice to do GSM roaming overseas for CDMA iPhones' a couple of days before that launch was a dead giveaway. He may have already done this with 'some new Television Product' in November (with 'some new' interaction method + a subsidised deal with comcast).

Happy anticipation…

October Please.

Yeah, after buying two new Granite iPhone 5s's (<-that looks strange) for the wife and I, there's going to be no money left in my account for at least another month.

Surely Apple must be thinking the same thing. :)

It seems quite evident that you are not a software developer and didn't watch any of the relevant WWDC sessions.

Best buy has $30-$50 discounts on current gen iPads right now. That never happens unless new models are coming. This is pretty much confirmed.

iPad Mini Retina September 10, 2013

iPad Mini Retina YES!! Bring it on... Please!!! I know I'll buy one right away. It'll stop me from getting a Kindle Paperwhite to read in the evening.

One more thing?

You know, if they wanted to simply solve the issue of the retina mini, they could simply just announce a tweak to the mini's screen and then coast through the holidays to re-sync the March release time frame of the iPad line...

No you shouldn't. Like separate iPods, separate readers are obsolete technology. You wouldn't buy a separate digital photo frame anymore. It's over. Multi-purpose is here to stay and rule.

Yeah, but iPhones match iPods in music quality. E-readers offer an infinitely better reading experience than tablets.

This is unequivocally untrue relative to a dedicated reading device. Until iPads have e-ink technology (or something that is completely non-reflective), reading a book on an iPad/tablet vs a dedicated reading device (Kindle, nook, etc.) is as different as driving a car and flying an airplane.

No but seriously. Why separate events for these two products when they really are almost the exact same thing? Make it all one big a** event and make a huge internet splash with it being all everyone talks about.

Easy, make Q4 wall-to-wall coverage of everything Apple by staggering out the announcements. Apple would much rather get weeks and weeks of prime placement on all newscasts, print, websites, etc... instead of one or two days of it.

Besides, all indications are that the new iPad is simply not ready to ship yet. That is from iOS 7 to manufactured parts.

Basically, expect a MAJOR APPLE ANNOUNCEMENT every month for the next 3-4 months.

I'm not sure it's a very smart move to be releasing all their products(iphone, iPad and macbook pro) within the same quarter, even if it's just before the holiday season... People like to spread their costs throughout the year. If you're well off, great, you can afford your entire apple fix in october, but for the aspirational lot, it's a better proposition to have a device released every quarter or two...

If you're an Apple fan on an upgrade year, this october is going to be very expensive...

You do know that just because something new comes out doesn't mean you have to get it the first day it is out, right? If you can't afford everything at once, then save up and wait 2 months.

I can't imagine another Siri-arsed feature like fingerprint scanner is going to get anybody excited, most especially if it goes to the cloud for every Bit, the way Siri does. Disaster.

Are you saying it might have to connect to a network to unlock your phone via fingerprint? That would be ridiculous for many different reasons, principally being that storage space required for fingerprint recognition is so much less than that need for Siri. Why do that? (unless you believe the tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorists who would have you believe Apple is including this feature to give up our privacy info to the NSA).
