Nobody is gonna wear this thing to do things they can do without it. Pulling up a floating spreadsheet is just not compelling. Watching a movie (by yourself) on a giant floating flat screen isn't that compelling either. But an immersive VR game is compelling at least to some people. Apple didn't show anything having to do with games. Literally the sole thing that sells VR. So yet again, Apple misses the boat on gaming. 🤦‍♂️

Most devs probably don't know what to do with it. I can't imagine a AR/VR version of my banking apps, various smart home apps, reward card apps, etc.

Edit: Not to mention, food ordering apps. You can see the food on your plate before you buy it!! lol
Unfortunately this is the future these big tech companies want. Shop at virtual Walmart with a virtual shopping cart and aisles and all.

How about get off your couch and go to the store physically? People already move too little these days we don’t need more excuses.

The whole VR thing strikes me very similarly to the big push for 3D movies in Theaters. It's alright but not something I'd want all the time. I understand they want to invent new revenue streams, but both VR and 3D need to die already. The majority of consumers could not care less about either of them. The industry has to keep learning this lesson over and over.

Like online shopping for groceries doesn't exist today and is something people enjoy so much in person that they would want to do it in VR.
Perhaps it is another exemple of having so much money you start to loose the ability to understand regular life.
They will have to offer fun and enticing short term experiences or very useful professional applications.

reading some of the comments here as always are funny. It's clear people don't see the long terms development for this headset. No doubt at 3500 people won't be buying it in the millions it's more about where apple takes the product and how it will look in 5-10 years time. All the benefits of the headset will be in a smaller form factor like the glasses. The vision pro is to develop the tech so they can get to that point.

The headset isn't just for games and VR. Seems people are very confused about the long term development of this product. It's not going to be used in the streets anytime soon but it will be a device that in the future most i expect will be using.

One thing I noticed in the announcement video, is that the majority of experiences they showed are either for one person alone, or not better than just using a regular screen/phone.

Phone nor tablet would be able to do any of the things they showed at the event anywhere near to this level. They certainly won’t be able to watch content or use so many apps at once like the vision pro will. Wether it’s worth the cost is another story

Interesting comment, as it highlights the OS limitations of multitasking/windowing with iOS/IPadOS. But with a Mac with multiple displays performing work with many apps, can't see a Vision Pro equaling that because the VisionOS resembles iOS in some ways even if you can orientate apps in an another axis to spread out information. ;)

I'm going to by one and never open it. Maybe my kids can sell it for a fortune 20 years from now.
In 20 years the market will be flooded with unopen 1st Gen Apple Visions as all 400K of them are snapped up, but never used.😏 All in unopened boxes as investments.😉
Religion: fully immersive version of all of Christ's or Buddha's sermons in person, on location.
I tried that out once. Got a free pair of Irish sunglasses for my trouble.🤕
Speak up!😂😂😂

Next time I'll stand closer so I can hear.😏

Thats a strange take, considering much of the moving watching world already watches movies on giant flat screens. Having your own cinema by putting on a headset is certainly just as compelling as games to a lot of people.
Likewise with your spreadsheet comment. I mean, you chose to use spreadsheets as your example to make your point, but a simple head set that can basically recreate an office full of as many different screens at all sizes of you machine is also just as compelling as gaming.

Obviously, you have a point with the ‘on your own’ aspect, but still.

There are definitely many more compelling uses for such a device than the one or two that this unimaginative forum seems to be able to envisage.

their is going to be very little money to be made for devs on this as the install base will be very small. apple could court to indie game devs like myself as we have passion and time to waste on projects like these, but i didn't even make it into unity's beta for xros.

so good luck tim.

Agreed! Tim Cook really thought he can get into people's heads by using a fancy word like, Spatial Computing.

Exactly !! I don’t really think it’ll “replace” the iPhone as many would suggest. Especially for that price tag, which is not very compelling compared to the specs.

Also, can you actually imagine Steve Jobs wearing this thing on stage and talking about how cool and revolutionary it is and why you should buy it ? He would never do that lol. Even Tim Cook didn’t do it, though it would’ve been fun to see 😂

Even with those examples you can't ignore the 800lb gorilla in the room, which is $3500 for a single person usage device. A phone you can at least put on speaker. A lot of consumer look at what they used can be shared, this is walking away from that aspect of how you share the benefits/cost for a family. ;)

There is no denying Apple pioneering here with the Vision Pro, its just its a hard sell except to individuals.
Of course, that gorilla will be part of the new top 11 critics of Vision Pro 10 years later. Bookmark please :D

It seem like a lot of people agree this is bound to be a flop.

Why can't apple management see what millions of random people on the internet see clearly?

I could be wrong, but here is my worry for an actual realistic consumer viewpoint.
Apple needs to not let this die and fail, for a LONG time before it can get anywhere near the "Vision" it showed off in their KeyNote Video of how they imagine such a device being used.

Being into gaming, and wearing a headset for a little while to enjoy an immersive game. Yes sure. That audience is already there and has the potential to grow. It's an inconvenience to wear such a device, but the fun that can be had makes it worth it for some people.

Wearing such a device at your kids party, when friends come over to chat to you, when packing your suitcase, perhaps in the kitchen etc.
None of those things are going to realistically happen with any device anything like this.

If they looked like some slightly chunky sunglasses, then ok, we could see this perhaps become a reality, but we are so many years away from this right now.

Without question there is going to be a lot of excitement at launch and some interesting things will be shown off thanks to developers. Then reality is going to start sinking in, and what than happens after the tech news get's bored as there's not much else to report on it?

It could end up as some sort of corporate device?

If Apple don't target the people who currently buy these products (Gamers who are willing to put up with the issue of wearing something heavy on their face for the experience)
Are they going to keep the produce in production and sale for the next...... 10 years? Until we get to a product general consumers would actually realistically consider wearing?

I could see a launch, some time passing, then it vanishes, only to re-emerge years later.
Honestly I don't want this to happen, as it won't help the industry as a whole.

I can see the headlines now "VR/AR is dead, even Apple could not make it work, and if they can't no-one can"

I do wonder if Meta has kind'a the right approach, which is actually more like the approach Apple normally has.
Build something reasonable at an affordable price point, and then use your "Apple Magic" to make it the best it can be. Then year after year make it better and better, bringing customers with you, until you reach your end goal.

It's going to be interesting to see where we are in 1 to 2 years from now.
