Apple's Yerba Buena Decoration Shows Stretched iOS Icons, Possibly Hinting at Taller iPhone 5

I would say you were missing the point

That's kinda like saying "well why have a camera as most people keep their phone in their pockets so all you will get is pictures of pocket fluff" :D

You would need to take the phone out of your pocket if you wanted to use the thermometer (if it exists lol... speculation of course) as you do with anything else. Also it would have benefits with regards to safety - I have updated the post with some more information:

The pic you posted on your blog - the very first icon (the blue one on the left) - the window display definately has some kind of dark vertical lines running down the blue on either side. Also, at the top - the lines are joined be a horizontal line as well - looks a little like the top of the Music app icon...?!?

A thermometer?
Please... My old nokia had that and I never used it since it took a while for it to stabilize. Of course with, todays technology, one could make the argument that the detection time wouldn't be as long but still, I don't see this coming to the next iPhone. I agree with some of the people above, I'd rather have FM-radio than this feature.

Interesting idea. What if it was one of those no-contact thermometers that you point into your ear canal and it reads instantly?

If they put the sensor beside the phone's earpiece, the phone could log your body temperature every time you're on a call. Or, to be really clever while on a call, it could crank up the earpiece's volume if it senses that the earpiece isn't positioned directly over your (hot) ear canal.

Maybe iPhone 5's big thing wil be health integration? Heart monitor, exercise/motion/activity tracking, that sort of thing.

According to the iOSNova post I read, it would be in the speaker module at the bottom of the phone.

Also a few people have mentioned about it would retain body heat for a while - what if Apple get you to shake your phone around in the air (like with the compass) :p

Did they specifically say speaker at the bottom? The earpiece is a speaker too, you know.

They use a picture (though of a 4S when mentioning the iPhone 5) implying that is it in the bottom speaker (loudspeaker) module.

Again, this is all speculation but it would make sense to have it within the loudspeaker at the bottom as the holes allow external air in and I imagine it would be difficult to squeeze into the earpiece speaker space.

Headphone port would not be viable as it would be blocked with headphones in, same as doc connector port.

Logically, if apple were to include a thermometer, the best place to do so would be under the loudspeaker grille.

Hahahaha, I would've never seen that!
So if this hints at a taller iphone, what will their "slogan" for this phone be?
"Let's stretch it out"? I mean I've seen all the rumors about the alleged "new iPhone" but something just doesn't feel right with this. Apple wouldn't do this. And since Tim Cook said that they would "double down" och secrecy, I'm really looking forward to wednesday's reveal. Not because I want to see the phone that we've all been seeing for 2months, I want Tim Cook to chock us!

Please god, let this be an awesome phone, let it rip down the S3 as the dominant force, let it be as beautiful as only Apple can make it. I really need it. My old iPhone broke and I need some good news right about now (Wednesday).

It would be kind of funny to see all speculation being a hoax, and the actual new iPhone or iPhone 5 being for instance the tear-dropped version :)

I still don't think there will be a thermometer. I understand for cut out of overheating but as an app? I can't see it being much use (due to lag time) or a feature that would make people choose an iPhone. It's like one of those pens with a clock in the end.

If I'm wrong I will come back and eat my words!

I hope you're hungry lol (joke)!

Again, how much use is the compass - don't know anyone that has used it lol - if you are in a situation where you need a compass, you wouldn't want one that has a battery life (picture people frantically turning off wifi and bluetooth to try and save battery lol) :D

So Apple is really trying to put a lot of emphasis on the fact that the phone is simply a bit taller.

I personally think it's a bit risky.

If it was anyone but Apple I'd agree with you. But Apple has such an ardent base of customers that are so devoted to Apple they truly believe the company is acting in the customers best interest.

These customers worship & trust Apple even more than they trust themselves, they just sit back & wait for Apple to release the next product for them to buy without hesitation.

To verify this, there's thousands of posts on this very forum making statements that prove it. Apple is nothing if not cunning.

Only if the goal is to measure ambient temperature (and that may be the goal).

OTOH, if the goal is to measure body temp, the earpiece might be a better place.

The more I think about it, health/biometric integration may be the big differentiator for iphone 5? The population is aging, healthcare costs are going through the roof and folks are getting more and more health conscious.

Personally, I own the integrated Withings scale and blood pressure monitor and they integrate beautifully with iOS. Tracking my weight and blood pressure couldn't be easier. I used to own several Jawbone UP wristbands which were great at tracking my daily activity, sleep quality, calories burned, etc. and they integrated well with iOS too. (Unfortunately the UP product was plagued by technical difficulties and withdrawn from sale).

So, if health monitoring/tracking was the - ahem - "killer feature" (sorry! ) of iP5/iOS6, wouldn't that be a wonderful and fitting legacy for what was possibly the last 'phone Steve worked on?

That may be the case, but either way it's still a cool looking banner; I like it just for the colors -- and it certainly draws the eye of passers-by.

Woah, this post is so edgy.

Indeed - however it would be difficult to squeeze into the earpiece speaker though it could still work as an ambient temp sensor for safety shut off when the phone is place on a surface.

The health thing would be great especially as you say, there are so many biometric/health accessories on the market and as the last phone that Steve Jobs worked on, I would hope for something other than screen size to come along and blow everyone out of the water.

So the icon we haven't figured out (I assume that's still the case, as I can't read through 550 comments at work).. could that be the combination of SMS and iMessage? It's green and blue, which would be the two colors your texting shows up as depending on the way it's sent. Hum.

most seem to think it is the GPS

Yes, Steve would go down in history as the man that gave the insurance companies the personal real time health status of everyone that uses an iPhone.

Just think of the savings realized for those of us like myself, I'm extremely active, workout & train regularly. Run marathons & participate in other athletic events, this technology should entitle me to a nice discount on my health insurance policy.

Conversely those who are out of shape, or have medical conditions requiring them to modify their food intake & physical activity, would be able to use this system to help them change. They'd have the ability to reduce their health insurance premiums.

The brilliance of Steve Jobs is ongoing.

The one thing that still gives me a glimmer of hope that the iPhone 5 just could surprise us, and that's despite it losing its golden ratios, the "off" placement of the rear camera etc, is that quite simply - it just looks a bit crap.

Image

I mean, ok so Jony Ive has his knighthood now and Steve is gone but does that mean he should give up on good design? This just looks proportionally wrong, it's not appealing to the eye. Forget specs and everything else and what you're left with is a design that doesn't look like Jony Ive would approve to me. There's a reason Apple have used golden ratios so often - they look right, this design does not. Please let this be an elaborate misdirection by Apple and give us something better! :)

I thought the same, but look at the latest leaks, the back camera is aligned now.

nouvel-iphone-5-003.jpg

It seems like earlier prototypes temporarily used the iPhone 4S's camera which was larger and couldn't be aligned properly. Now that the real new camera is being produced it looks much better since it can be aligned.
