The lack of optical out was a concern for me. But the writing was on the wall for the optical toslink. It is quickly becoming a legacy connection. I actually needed the optical to make the apple tv work with my Samsung 560s 5.1 receiver since my HDMI pass-through stopped working about a year ago. So alas, when new tech comes out you often have to buy a few more gadgets to make it all work. SO....A new Harmon Kardon AVR1710 receiver to mate with the new ATV4 when it is released has already been installed in my system.

So the lack of optical on the ATV, in my case, forced me into a better setup

4K isn't wildly adopted, so it shouldn't be on the iPhone, by your own logic as to why it's not on the Apple TV

That's a strange extrapolation. The issue is why 4k wasn't on the Apple TV yet, not why it is on the iPhone. Let's not confuse the issue.

But you're making broad generalizations that 4K isn't on the Apple TV because Apple waits for more mass adoption, but you can't explain why 4K is on the iPhone

I'm just pointing out the flaw in your logic

I think you have mistakenly constructed a fallacy which seems to be a straw man. The subject of the discussion is the Apple TV not the iPhone. The rationale for one product line to have the feature does not preclude the rationale for the other product line not to have the feature. Apple have rolled out technology across various product lines on an incremental basis and along varied timelines. My argument is simply that, as far as the Apple TV is concerned (not a generalization), Apple obviously doesn't see the logic in rolling out the 4k feature as yet. I've given you my opinion as to what I think their rationale is for that decision i.e the lack of adoption of Broadcast 4K TV . I'll go further and state that lack of adoption of Broadcast 4K TV is the single largest impediment for mass adoption of 4k TV sets. Hence why the Apple TV doesn't have 4K yet. The iPhone adopting 4k today seems totally irrelevant with regards to why the Apple TV doesn't have 4K today especially since the iPhone doesn't require a TV to function.

I can't help myself from chiming in, my medication has hit and It does like to make me blabber on, as you can probably tell already :D

Anyhooo,

I think the situation with the new Apple TV not having 4K is just a logical one based on the current and near future market.

Compared to the user base for 1080p hardware, the 4K user base is a mere fraction. Likewise the media availability for 4K is tiny compared to that of 1080p. In fact, while I can't speak for other countries, here in the UK there's a huge amount of broadcast channels yet to even make the jump to 1080p.

I have no doubt that 4K is the future for us and the user base, if not the media, will grow quite quickly.

From The point of view of Apple, I think they have made the best business decision. Provide a 1080p box to cater for the current dominant market and we all upgrade to the new box with an AppStore.

Then in a year or two, when 4K is more widely adopted, release a new Apple TV with 4K and we'll all upgrade again and fill the pockets of Apple once more.

I don't believe this product is created in mind for the in-depth tech guru guys who can route signals through a million different ways that takes an advanced know-how of computing, who also own almost every Apple product.

This is a plug and play device with easy features that covers lots of bases for the average family.

Try to remember that this Apple TV is working off Bluetooth so you can now mount or hide the "big box" behind your TV. It doesn't require a direct line of site. I'm sure the other issues you address has to do with cost and putting it above the $149 spot.

I mount my AppleTV2&3 behind (in fact on) my TV and the current remote works fine.

As for this current AppleTV, I am waiting it out to decide (not a gamer). I am very happy with my current AppleTVs. I use them for all my TV watching except for OTA. I wish Amazon was supported, so unless that only happens on the new AppleTV, I'll probably sit this one out, unless some really compelling apps are released.

I'm in the buying camp. Very eager to replace my 2nd Generation and leave behind the random rebooting which has become all too common. I wish there was pre ordering in place.

I might get both the new Apple TV and the new Fire TV.

Apple TV for Airplay and Apple Music, I have never bought a movie or TV show from iTunes.
Fire TV because it supports both Amazon Prime Instant Video and Netflix in 4K. I have a Panasonic 4K TV from last year that doesn't support Netflix (2015 models do, I got screwed).
There will be a lot of redundant features but that's what I get for being an early 4K adopter.

My girlfriend hates using the PS4 for to watch streaming content, I guess I may have to end up buying this thing now

Yes (it's not perfect but its way better than anything else out there, including functioning within the ecosystem I'm heavily invested in; it's also dirt cheap at $149, amortizing out to about $0.10 for each time I use it before finally replacing it).

Yup I will be buying no questions asked. I use a PS3 currently and I'm tired of using its remote for the streaming. ATV3 for secondary TV and ATV4 for main living room tv. It's a done deal, theres really nothing else to discuss.

I use my Apple tv all the time without issues and I am also invested in the eco system. I love the additions and improvements coming to the 4th gen so I'll be upgrading for sure. :) Probably getting the 64 gb to be on the safe side because who know what things may develop or policies changed in the future or even if they will friggin wait 3-4 years to upgrade it again.

Lack of 4K seems to me to be very cynacal (and likely symptomatic of the unit being ready to go for half a year or more). While 4K isn't that widespread yet it is working it's way down the TV lineup range (e.g. in Samsung's range, only the low end 5 series does not offer 4K and I believe the 6 series is the highest range 1080p set you can get) so next year I can can imagine that unless you buy the very cheapest range/brand anyone buying a new TV of 40" and over will get 4K by default. I think Apple clearly had a choice to add in an HDMI 2.0a connector and support 4K (since the A8 seems like it could cope with HEVC) but the easier option would be to put out this box and then a new 4K box in 12-18 months time (like the ATV2-ATV3 with 720p and 1080p). I will probably buy it anyway as the app store offers enough potential for me even knowing a new 4K box will come sooner rather than later.

I prefer the old one. Don't like the form factor of the new one, and all the new features are useless to me. I also like that the old one matches my Airport Express perfectly. Zero desire for the new, at all. All I want Apple TV to do is handle music and video airplay, stream netflix, hbo, screen savers, and, that's about it.

No. Don't seem like a need for it after spending over a $1000 on my 6s plus. I'll continue to watch my movies on my MacBook lol

I chose "Yes (it's perfect and has everything I ever wanted)" because there wasn't "Yes (because some $%#% broke in and stole my Apple TV 3)"

But I kind of wanted it anyway, and I'm a sucker for upgrading my Apple stuff.
