Actually I need to spend this weekend pricing out a PC with the specs I expect to see with a IPS Dell 24" monitor and see how that compares to what we'll get with the 2012 iMac.

Well I can already tell you that you can get a PC with the same specs for cheaper than the 2012 iMac...Unless Apple decides to drastically change their strategy for pricing their computers.

Probably within a few days after I spec it out based on whatever options they offer. In New York, if you're buying hardware for use in designing software or websites for sale, you can buy hardware tax-free with this form. It complicates the buying process, but saves you a boat load in taxes if you're eligible.

With a beefier GPU to boot.

Is there a way to know if we can upgrade the RAM outside of buying one? Is it advertised on their website somewhere?

I'll wait for Anandtech's review to see where the GPUs performance will end up.

A couple more weeks of wait to be sure (in case Apple does something drastic with this revision).

I'm going to wait for 2017 refresh myself. I'm all set for a while. :D

There will not be a 2017 iMac.

No iMac in 2017? You're kidding, right? After all, it was the iMac that requested Apple from disaster, it was Steve's baby. There's no way that they'll drop the iMac ever. And what about all those 13 year olds wanting to do proper stuff when they leave school? That's just proof that Apple not only doesn't care about professionals, it hates the next generation as well.

Check back here. We'll tell you. :)

On their website, you check the tech specs. If it talks about some # of SODIMM slots, then they're using standard RAM and you can get it anywhere. It it says the RAM is "on board", then they went with the soldering approach and you can't.

Having never owned an iMac I am not sure if I should go with the magic mouse or the trackpad.

I like the trackpad on my macbook pro but I do wonder if a mouse will work better on a desktop. Which is more precise do you reckon?

If I get the magic mouse and decide I don't like it can I swap it for a trackpad without paying any extra...?

Get the trackpad it's best for all the gestures. If you need a mouse afterwards you can buy one. In several cases users prefer non-apple mouses to the magic mouse.

I'm scared of the Trackpad getting dirty, even if you wash your hands your fingers do have oil does it muck up overtime?

I have a budget which has been put aside since June to buy 28 machines the second they announced :) Hurry it up Apple! :)

I would go to an Apple store and try both, to see which you like better. I'll get the Magic Mouse personally, I worked with it for a month and loved it.

Sorry, wasn't trying to be a jerk. :)

Just pointing out that that trackpad was constructed such that it was easy to clean without potential damage to the electronics inside.

I don't think you were being a jerk at all

I use both the Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse on my desktop computers. I find that for general use and surfing the internet, the trackpad is really comfortable to use and current OS X really makes good use of gestures. However, for games or editing programs which utilize a lot of "pick and drag" functions, the mouse seems much better suited. For more intense games I also have a Logitech Revolution MX mouse which is easier to grip due to the higher profile. So ... I have all three connected all the time.

If you think you want both, order with a trackpad. I have read here that some buyers at Apple Stores have simply been given a trackpad to avoid taking the time to open the iMac box and remove the mouse. I don't know that this would occur with online ordering ... however, there always seem to be Magic Mouses (mice?) available on eBay and CL new from buyers who prefer a different mouse or don't like the Magic Mouse. Many are brand new and unopened. You don't see that many trackpads for sale.

Good advice, Thanks!

Retailers

Question, do third party retailers (e.g. Best Buy) typically release new models the same day as Apple?

I'd like to take advantage of the airline miles and 0% financing Best Buy offers.

I thought like that, once. I bought a Dell IPS 24" monitor. Sadly, it simply does not compare to an Apple screen.
