iOS isn’t a full desktop OS either and it can barely handle an iPad at this point. So we can compare iOS to chrome os?

And how about the ecosystem? It sure shows Google delivers. Or would you say that over 50% of schools are just dumb?

Nobody claimed iOS was a desktop OS. We’re saying ChromeOS isn’t a “full desktop OS”. Saying A is not something doesn’t mean B is.

Schools aren’t dumb. However, they make decisions out of necessity. Which often means low price.

Apple lacks in the device management area for education (where Google currently excels). That could all change tomorrow. People are thinking Apples event is about new hardware. I think it’s about software and management. If I were Google I’d be worried right now.

That seems to be the root of the issues in this discussion. Lack of knowledge as to what Chrome OS is or knowledge that is woefully outdated.

If they only knew how much Chrome OS has changed and what it can do....alot of words would not be said in this thread. IMO, Chrome OS is the future of laptops, desktops, phones, and tablets. In one way or another, it will merge everything Google has to offer. And its starting to happen...slowly but surely. There will be no need to buy overpriced limited products that Apple still pimps out. And Windows is becoming too complex and disorganized for some with a lack of good apps. Chrome OS is becoming the way to go.....I'm just looking forward to its future and its ultimate potential.

Device management isn't the ONLY area where Google excels for education. An important one yes, but not the only one.

It COULD change tomorrow, but it would require significant changes to some low level subsystems in iOS. If the announcement IS about device management, then I suspect it will be an announcement only, not the release of specific software and services.

It's a juggernaut in the education system. But keep lying to yourself.

I’m glad you get a ton of use out of it. Google can start building their profiles for children now.

So it's better in your opinion then. Your comments make sense now.

You think ChromeOS is better than iOS in those areas? Please, I’d love to hear this one.

Probably not, but I own one Apple device to keep myself up to date. So when I debate, my words are because of experience and I own other devices with different OS's to show and discuss my experiences.

I own numerous Android devices (my S9 is on its way soon). I always ask people to give me some examples of Apps to try on Android and iOS (regarding my claims iOS Apps are superior). I ask others for the simple reason that if I suggest some I’ll be accused of bias.

Yet nobody bothers. I can only think of two possible reasons. Those who claim to own iOS devices AND Android devices actually don’t own both so are unable to or that they already know iOS Apps are superior and choose not to engage in a losing exercise.

If the numerous people on MR are so convinced Android is superior (or equal) why not provide examples?

Wonder if this runs legitimate programs like photoshop and other intensive programs? If it does, take notes APPLE!

This thread is not about providing examples right now. Android is the better productivity operating system than iOS and it has been for several years. I'm not about to go into that again. Chrome OS is the ultimate productivity operating system in comparison to any iOS device and its better than android as well. You can research the information yourself since Google is the primary search engine on all Apple devices. Google and educate yourself...

A thread based on the educational needs of students and you guys want examples of apps and stuff.......remember the kids....google has a entire productivity suite just for them with parental blocks and everything on chrome OS yet we have to go off topic.

I don't know what a "legitimate" program is, but Chrome OS doesn't run apps that require a "desktop-strength" operating system like Windows, macOS, or Linux.

They need to realize......the educational market is not for photoshop. Photoshop comes up everytime in a thread of this sort.....I rarely even use it because their are easier ways to edit a photo or video.

But it has a file system. BOOM.
Yep, so does Apple :)

Sorry, no. You can’t be productive without Apps. And both Android and ChromeOS lag in this area. You repeating falsehoods about both over and over won’t make it true.

The off topic issue happened when people started lying and claiming ChromeOS was a full desktop OS. It’s not.

It’s not price alone. It’s the whole package. Google is delivering where Apple is lagging/failing. We’ve seen this with desktops, laptops and now education too. If Apple isn’t able to deliver tomorrow we will see another whole category go. Years of neglect begin to show.

Yes and no. I don’t know if Apple really cares about a market that isn’t very profitable. I’m sure if Apple sold MacBooks for 200-300$ they would take over “chromebooks” but that’s not the world we live in.

Only people spreading misinformation are those that claim ChromeOS is a "full desktop OS".

It's not. It's a wannabee OS. People like to pretend it is so they can claim Google is playing in the same ballpark as Windows or macOS. Or so they can bash the iPad because it runs a mobile OS.

People do like to pretend.

The irony behind this is that ChromeOS is based off Linux. You can run web apps as if they are standalone apps. That alone creates more exposure. The browser sandbox is a capable space for providing a minimalistic desktop experience if desired. If for some odd reason you wanted to create a Gimp/Photoshop equivalent, there's really nothing stopping you from working with WebGL.

I personally would not want to use either iOS or ChromeOS as my desktop OS. Hilarious thread indeed

Not in the education sector. Chromebooks, Google Classroom, Google Drive, and now a Chrome tablet... I'd say they're doing pretty well.

So these things exist and are prevalent in some schools at some level, but are there numbers to support that? Is it the market share number being thrown around for all schools? How do we know they are doing so well?
