I believe you are going lose $180. They will only credit the amount of the payments being made. To get the full $650 you need to have $650 financed through Next. What you need to do is put down $220 so that $650 is left to be paid off, which will be credited over 24 months.

Edit: this is how it was explained to me at the local store and it was brought up explicitly due to the system only allowing a 30% down payment the first time I preordered (I wanted to pay $220 to get it to $650). I ended up going through 3 different preorders due to some problems my sales person was having and the next 2 times it allowed me to put $220 down. Now that I read the promotion again I have no idea if this is right or not.
Very strange. I would imagine the 400$ I put down will pay off the phone then and have remaining credits on my account. I need to go in an talk to someone. They could always return it when I get it then repurchase possibly with the conditions. But who knows.

Yeah I have no idea and I feel like you could ask 5 people and get 5 different answers. I'm definitely going back tomorrow for some clarification. Hopefully the person knows what they're talking about.
What really stinks about this is that if what you get told turns out to be wrong, you won't know it for three months. At that point I'm guessing it's not going to be easy to get it corrected.

i would get something in writing or a transcript to hold them accountable. Not sure if it would help but its better than nothing.

All good information here, but I think I am going to head to at least two different local AT&T stores just to get clarification on this. Because if this is true and allowed even if you preordered through Apple for the Next plan, this is win/win for a lot of people. Here's my scenario:

-I started Next Plan in 2014 with iPhone 6 Plus 128GB during preorders
-that iPhone was paid off literally last week with this month's phone bill, so I now own that iPhone
-I preordered iPhone 7 Plus 128GB with Next Plan during preorders yesterday

So based off of what I'm reading, I should be able to take my iPhone 6 Plus to an AT&T store to trade it in, to basically have the value of that phone used to receive a monthly credit each month for the payment of my new iPhone 7 Plus, correct?

One chat with ATT. Probably going to go into a store tomorrow

I asked the same questions last night for my wife's preorder and received almost the exact same response. I saved the transcript and a screen shot of the terms and conditions in case of an issue.
did you put a down payment also?

Are you planning to trade in your 7 in 12 months? If so, you never want to put down money on a lease of anything, phones included. For example, let's say you're getting an $869 phone. If you put down $400, you then have to make 12 payments of (869-400)/24=19.54 and get 12 credits of 27.08 for a net credit each month of 7.54. After 12 months you're in the positive $90.52 from payments but you put out the $400 so when you turn it in you've given att $310. With no down payment, after 12 months you've only given att $110. So you've basically thrown away half your down payment. If you stick with the payments for the full 24 months and keep the phone to resell yourself, it all evens out and the down payment is okay.

So it ends on September 15??? One day before launch day??? We have to give up our phone before we receive a new one???? I knew there was a catch!
Something seems a little wrong with this date. How could it end on the 15th if the phone launch doesn't even start until the 16th??? It says you can also do this in stores. I don't think they would make you turn in your phone and just wait around until you phone shipped being that there would NO iPhones in the store on the 15th.
If anyone is going into an ATT store soon, could you please ask about the deadline date?
Calling is probably not a good idea right now unless you want to be on hold a couple hours.
I just can't see the 15th as the correct deadline date.

I'm going in to a store soon, if not packed w/ mouthbreathers I'll update this once I have some solid answers.

I didn't want the 7, i'm content with my 6. i know come iP8/2017 my iP6 won't be worth much and this potential credit would be perfect. i just feel like there's something to leave us out to dry.

Thank you Agile55. That would be very helpful to this thread!

IOW, this is ATT's way of putting you back on a 24 month contract.
Exactly! This is not unlike the old subsidy plans of a while ago.

why did it change to the 15th?
It didn't "change" to the 15th.
The offer states that it ends on the 30th but that was only for people in Puerto Rico.
It doesn't say what the deadline is for those not living in Puerto Rico.
Someone stated they were told it was the 15th.
But that seems questionable now.

I was just online with Chat and I asked about the expiration on this offer.
He didn't know but said he would check and be right back.
When he came back he said there was no expiration and it was just while supply lasts thingie.
So no, it doesn't end on the 15th for the U.S. The 30th is just a Puerto Rico thing.
And no, it's not just for new lines. The trade in just has to be not on any type contract and be free and clear.

I just came back from my local AT&T store to speak with a rep face to face about this promotion. Here's what he confirmed with me:

-iPhone on previous Next Plan must be paid off before you preorder the iPhone 7 on your new Next Plan
-Free iPhone 7 is based off of the lowest variant (iPhone 7 32GB)
-Customer pays difference based on the variant they want
-The promotion is automatic, once you receive and activate your new iPhone, you will receive a text message with promotional offer details for trading in your device
-Currently, the promotion has no end date.
-Even if AT&T establishes an end date, as long as you pay your current iPhone off on your Next Plan and complete a preorder before this happens, the promotion will still be honored.

Hope this helps anyone with questions. If there's something I left out or didn't address, let me know.

What Capt. M stated above covers it well as I just left an ATT store & did the deed, i.e., traded my iP6+ for an iP7+ & my ship date is 7 Oct but that can/may bump up.

It's a straightforward trans. IMO & after receipt of the 7+ I'll take my 6+ back to the store to avoid issues w/ shipping it back to ATT.

HTH & as always YMMV applies here.

Thanks for the information! Can you also confirm that if we sign up for Next Every Year plan and decide to do upgrade next year, the remaining credit from month 13-24 will be lost? That's a big factor for me as it would be like trading in my iPhone this year for nothing. Thanks.

No problem. The rep I spoke with couldn't confirm or deny this, but if I had to guess, since you are surrendering your device, you'd probably lose any future credits by upgrading or changing the Next Plan for the iPhone 7 since you would technically start another by acquiring the iPhone 7S or iPhone 8 whatever the next iPhone may be called. But hey, you never know...

Agreed. Even with what the rep just told me a few minutes ago, I'd be cautious and try to return at the store as well...who knows how long or if that text would even come. That's the only part that seemed odd or a little off to me.

Ah well, I guess AT&T is trying to win back some consumer loyalty or at least a happy consumer.

So if I understand this offer correctly. After putting $50 down on an iPhone 7 +128 gig my monthly payment is approximately $27. What does that mean after the promotion and getting $27.09 Credit per month my phone is free?? If so that is a tremendous offer IMHO. Thanks to everyone helping out in this thread.
