lol I still have my att unlimited it's 39.00 a month. so really it's 5gb if you counted the limited part of the unlimited it's still cheaper. so no big savings here.

25$ for 1GB?
And you people pay these prices instead of hunting the CEOs with torches and pitchforks?

So, just to recap, my 3GB Verizon shared plan won't be increasing? So it's $60 for 3GB, $70 for 4GB, but $80 for 10GB? Seems a bit of a jump. Should be more like this:

$10 500MB
$20 1GB
$30 2GB
$40 4GB
$50 6GB
$60 8GB
$70 10GB
$80 12GB
$90 15GB
$100 20GB

I was on the $70 4gb plan and got a text from Verizon offering to up to 8gb with no price change or contract update. I thought I was on a 2 gb plan with 2gb free for upgrading but I honestly don't remember the cost of the plan:
Free Verizon Msg: Verizon appreciates your loyalty. You are currently on the $70/4GB plan. You can now get an extra 4GB of data per month for the same price you pay now. There's no change to your voice plan or contract extension. Would you like to move to this new plan? If so, reply YES.

i just changed my plan with verizon online.

i originally had their $70 4GB plan, which i increased to the 6GB plan for $80 last year. i just checked online and saw that it states my 6GB plan is no longer available, and in turn, the $80 plan is now 10GB. so i updated my account to the 10GB plan for the same $80 i was paying for 6. not bad.

The U.S. just needs to hurry up and get off limited data plans. Here in Switzerland everything is unlimited, you simply pay for throughput. For example, I pay for 30Mbps data (which includes unlimited talk and text). No additional charges for tethering either. They have plans that start at 256k and go up to "unlimited", which with 4G can be pretty fast! No throttling. I believe the rest of Europe has similar offerings.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you go over your data plan limits? I haven't been on a U.S. contract in so long, I can't remember what data plan I was on. I'll be going back to the U.S. soon and probably don't need a 10GB data plan, but I think 2-3GB might be too little.

When I was in Europe several years ago the person who made the call to a cell phone had to pay more than making a call to a landline. I found it interesting in that if the person is calling an Irish cell phone and the person with the cell phone was roaming in France I, as a calling party, had to pay the toll charge to France even though I didn't know it they were in France. It created a prejudice for calling cell phones, people would rather call a landline the cellphone because it's cheaper for them.
I was wondering if this still the case or if calling a cell phones is now the same cost to the calling party as calling a landline?

Nope it's over, thankfully, most carrier plans include unlimited international calls for just a $5 extra !

We have diesel here, too. But with gas at $2.80 a gallon, who cares?

The point I was making about diesel is that diesel cars are far more efficient, ours at least... For instance a gas car usually needs 6-7 L / 100km, a diesel one is closer to 3-4 L, so even with gasoline being twice as expensive i'm pretty sure we don't pay more at the end.

Is this already going to be a US vs EU thread?

Yup , as usual . people forget the population density/ size of territory part real quick .

That being said , here in Canada we have similar situation as US but there's no chance in a hell a pricing war will happen with the big three here ,Robelus being a monopoly approved by government sigh

Meanwhile in Europe 15 GBs to Unlimited oO

Certainly not in Germany. Data gets worse and worse now that people no longer use sms. Most people I know have 500mb or 1gb at most before they get throttled to something insane like 64kbs or even 32kbs for the rest of the month. One used to be able to reset the data for like 5€ but they even changed that. Instead of getting your original volume back for the month you only get another 200mb

It reminds me how lucky we are in the uk to get 1000gb of data and 4g tethering for $20 p/m

Verizon Edge requires a 10GB plan (now $100) to get the line access fee reduced to $15 vs $25.

Does this mean that we'll be able to select the upcoming $80 10GB plan and still receive the $15 line access fee?

It sounds like it, unless they change the requirement and say that it will now be 15 GB (which will cost the same as 10 GB costs now), or change it to be based on price and apply to a plan that is $100 or more (which again would be equivalent of that new 15 GB or the current 10 GB plan). Hopefully not though and it would still apply to 10 GB, which will now be cheaper by $20 (at $80).

My guess is that they'll still show it as a 10GB plan, with a separate line item (and tracking) for "promotional data".

Yeah, first thing I thought of, since I’ve recently been toying with the idea of just buying a phone outright. For our 4GB shared it wasn’t cheaper (with the $10 line discount), and it wasn’t cheaper for the 10G plan either because the “base” plan price offset the much steeper line discount of $25.

*If* this allows the $25/line discount because it now falls into the 10GB+ plans, we’ll definitely do that (mostly for the net price reduction, the extra data being just a side perk).

If you find out, it would be great if you post back to this thread. I’ve been considering a change to t-Mobile, but this might keep me with Verizon.

This is still more than I pay for unlimited and 300MB (wife doesn't use it much while out) with 2 iPhones. The only option for me that would save me money or equal it would be the 4GB shared plan. Come on AT&T. This still isn't good enough.

I'm in the same boat. I still have unlimited but wife has 2gb plan. My FAN discount applies to both plans so even if she goes over its still cheaper than getting any other data plan. What we don't have is any texting plan and/or tethering option (would work well for the kids ipads). Those are the only 2 features we would get but at a premium of about $40-50 more.

I'm on a 10GB shared ATT plan. Where's my discount or doubled data??

Don't know if you've been replied to or not, but call them up and tell them you're thinking about switching to Sprint's 20GB/$100 plan and ask if they have something to match. They will double your 10GB plan.

I'm on the 4 GB plan right now with AT&T... I just checked the website and it still says I have 4 GB, not 6 GB. When will the upgrade kick in? It'd be great if they could kick in right now, because I'm at 3.86 GB with 1 day left in the month, and I'm expecting that I'll use a decent amount tomorrow (last day before the next billing period.)

It starts tomorrow, 11/2, but they won't change you automatically. You need to call, go in, or use the app to make the change to the new plan. You can ask them to backdate the change to cover any overage, but if your bill cycle ends tomorrow, the system will likely not let them. They may be willing to issue you a credit for the overage given the timing, so you should ask.

Looking at these numbers, it looks like it may be cheaper and faster to ditch Comcast's Broadband for my home internet and just use AT&T's LTE.

Same here. We also have an excellent FAN (24%) on our account. Even going over our texting we also still pay less. I need to see 6GB shared for two lines at $115 (before FAN) before it's worth it for us.

I heard this and tried it but it didn't work. I don't think I got the retention department though and might call again to try.

It was a deal through the retention department that lasted for 3 days and then was stopped due to the overwhelming amount of calls that they received. I was lucky enough to get the deal and now have 20GB for the price of 10GB.

What if I have the 2gb, unlimited talk text, data share? Could I switch to the 3gb now for the same price? No contract?

That's nice...I'm paying $25 a month per phone on T-Mobile and getting 2.5 GB for each of my 4 phones. Beat that, AT&T and Verizon!

Just as soon as T-Mobile even comes close to having the same coverage and building penetration.

Yeah...the coverage really isn't the best, but I tested it with my cellular iPad over the summer, driving from California to Utah and found that it really wasn't THAT bad and I had at least some signal almost the entire way. I also get LTE in my home city, and I rarely leave from there.

USA vs ... !

Is this already going to be a US vs EU thread?

It is more like a USA vs Rest of the World situation! It is not just about cost/bandwidth, throttling, etc., but about how you are billed!

Everywhere else, the person making the call pays or uses up the minutes. Here, the in the USA, both parties get billed/tallied! That should be stopped! Missed calls - a whole another scam!

This is not an everyday situation - but you should know where the person you are calling happens to be, rarely out of the country! I sympathize, it happened to me too! This is how we all handled landlines for almost a century!

Each cell line in a household, before the T-Mobile shake-up, paid more than $50-70; adding to $240 or more with Verizon for a family of four - mostly not used! How much of that plan is important, essential or critical enough to be fiddling with a 4-6 inch screen while driving at 60MPH (in the USA), leave alone pay so much! I know a middle-class family paying more than $360/month! Yet, they complain about a $80 cable + $60 broadband bill! When did this become normal?!

Text messages use the least bandwidth - yet are billed at twice the rate of voice messages/minute! Who wrote these statutes? Yes, now, they bundle it as unlimited and so on, but this scam continues on prepaid plans!

As for download speeds, throttling, etc., how did we manage to breath oxygen all these modern decades without streaming content? Yes, I do understand business use needs (Stock Market, Medicine), but, what percentage amount to in the big picture as vital?

Why pay more than $1000 per 55 inch TV and the cable/satellite fee, when you are "catching up" with programs while sitting in a room, car, train - basically being rude and anti-social - on a 4 inch phone screen or 10-13 inch tablet or laptop? While listening to the fantastic audio thru' crappy ear-buds!

Here in the USA, I hear too much of other people's cell conversations, at decibels reserved for the scratchy overseas telephone calls of just 10-12 years ago! Another modern "convenience" that irks my mass transit commute - and the airlines are getting in the game! Miss those noisy kids being the biggest complaint - trains, planes, buses, fast and regular food restaurants/cafes!
