A Microcell won't help. Here in Brooklyn, 248 down and 56 up over microcell. It's a joke. I've been getting between 31 and 98 here in NYC, various locations, averaging about 60. I have a genius appointment to return it this afternoon. Between the horrific upload speeds, the disappearing data connection even when showing 5 bars, the deathgrip problem, I've had enough. I'll wait and hope that the issues are resolved then buy again.

So most of us here have this issue of slow data, do you guys think that it is network related or hardware related ? I also feel like this problem isn't as popular as the grip of death problem ...

It's network related. AT&T's Alcatel-Lucent equipment crapped out recently and they're working on a fix. Read through the posts for background on the whole issue.

I knew about that but AT&T , just like apple, says that they "know" what issue is and that a "fix" will be coming soon...no clear explanation
 
Here in north jersey (considered ny market since I'm right across the river from NYC) the upload speeds are still pretty awful. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.
 
Is anyone planning on returning their iPhone 4 if this issue isn't resolved before the end of the 30 day return period?

It *IS* a network issue.

I'd suggest you wait for the network issue to be fixed in your area (mind this thread, you'll know when it is), then see where you stand after that point.

If you don't like the phone now, just return it.

Simple.

So... you have both your 3GS and 4 active on your Data plan ? If so, run a quick speedtest on both and post the results.

Because the iPhone 4 uses HSUPA whereas the 3GS doesn't. The problem is with the HSUPA equipment from Alcatel-Lucent. The slow uploads are bottlenecking the download speeds for the iPhone 4, that's why you're seeing the difference with the 3GS. Read the previous pages before questioning blindly please.

This is incompetence beyond belief. But since we are talking about AT&T it's without a doubt.

So if the buggy HSUPA hardware is causing an issue then why don't they turn the hardware off at the towers? That way us with the iPhone 4 simply use the older HSDPA hardware instead.

If it were as easy as flipping a light switch on/off, I'm sure they would've done it already. Who knows their reasons. I want it fixed as much as you, but I wouldn't obsess over it. Just wait it out for now. I'm sure if you called in to AT&T customer service and complained nicely, they'll issue you some credit towards your monthly bill. I'm planning to if it doesn't clear up within the next couple weeks.

You don't know that they didn't do this.
 
No improvement in Denver

Glad to hear that Detroit Metro got better speeds, but here in Denver area stuck at 65 kbps up. Funny thing is that both my wife and I did side by side tests three separate times and every time got exactly 65kbps up! Tell me that is not capping!
 
No resolve in and around philly. this really is BS. I deal with IT upgrades on a major scale. If the go live fails there is a contingency plan. So this is totally unacceptable.... I use my phone for work and sending email is awful at 34kbps....
