IF you bought the 3G in July, August or September last year & you have a bill of $99 or more, you will be eligible for the lowest price available!
That's not $99 per line but for the whole account.
They said your account will be updated tomorrow by 6am EST.

Thats before taxes right?

I just got off the phone with a CSR, and explained to them i got the phone in August, and that I pay about 100-110 but was only allowed to get the 399/499 price. After being on hold for a bit the lady explained that with everything she saw on my bill that I should be eligible to get the 199/299. She said just to check my upgrade tomorrow at 6, and if still says that i'm getting at 399/499 to call, and they would fix it.

My real upgrade date is for February 1,2010

Here's the deal....

AT&T told me they just got a memo at 5pm (whatever their time is)....

All 3g people are eligible for Friday upgrade if their LINE is $99 or more. Period.

If you are the account holder and are at $95, you are screwed but call now and add some text messages to pull up the bill to $99.
If you are under a family plan paying $9.99+30data - temporarily go to an individual plan to get to $99.

I'm the acct. holder at $95. Husband is under me on Family at $45 (9.99+ 30data + 5 sms). I morphed our lines to individual $59.99 phone + 30 data + 15 sms plan. Each one is now at $104. I expect the site to show eligible tomorrow morning. After I get my phone - I will revert back to my Family plan and drop the extra texts.

I confirmed this twice with AT&T as being a good way to deal with this.

Let me first say that I agree 100% with those that felt that AT&T shouldn't do anything since we signed the contract with a 2-year term and a sub'ed price

But, if that is in fact true, I shake my head at how AT&T is only going to get MORE backlash from people.

I am under $99 and just fine waiting but judging from those I know AND what those have said here.....this will only inflame those angry about the upgrade price

So are you saying the $99/month is if you are paying that when they update their site (tonight) and not the average you have been paying for the past year? So I can add a bunch of text messages today, get over the $99 barrier, then drop it when I get the 3GS?

Not period. I called AT&T an hour ago and got this:
Asked the rep how much it would cost me to upgrade given the new requirements (as of yesterday I was December eligible and spend 90 per month on my bill and paid full price for my 3g iphone) final answer is I am eligible as of tomorrow to get the new iphone for the 199/299 price tag. I took the rep's name down and what city he works in in case at&t gives me trouble tomorrow. I am slightly excited but will be pumped if this is true and I can buy one tomorrow!

Diamond - Why? This is good news. We can all get a new phone if we ramp up the cost of our lines.

I'm giving my 16GB 3G to my Mom and using her upgrade to get a 32GB 3GS, so this way she gets an iPhone for free and I get the one I want cheaper, and I still have an upgrade on my account when the new phone comes out :p

And I'm still buying the 99$ 8GB 3G for my dad for Father's day, and my sister pre-ordered a 16GB 3GS, so the whole family will have iPhones now.

I'm going to have to do so much tech support/teaching... ugh, oh well, at least I'll have my 2-year AS to show for it so far...

the rep. i talked to didn't even know what the press release was. he put me on hold to come back with *NEW# and offered to try and 'secure an early upgrade of 499'. dude sounded like he was high as a kite.

i'll call back later, i guess. those who were successful, please let me know what you said, ty.

there was no haggling or bitching?

OK - It took me like a total of 4 hours to get that but the guy told me I'd have to pay $75 extra on top of the phone for the privilege for both my lines. I am (was?) eligible in December also. Husband - March 2010.

2nd time they told me the above was BS and my only shot was to morph both phones to individual at $99 or more per line. I went with that and I'm supposed to see new eligibility tomorrow morning online.

Now - the last rep I did this with claimed she got a memo at 5pm saying "no matter what - if a 3g phone is at $99+ per line I'm golden. We'll see.

I wish I talked to your person tho. And I hope they put notes all over your account. I trust no one there myself.

At first he said they could offer me the 399/499 price tag. I said, "well what about the new promotion" and mentioned AT&T's press release. He put me on hold for a second and came back and said as of tomorrow I could get the 199/299 price. I asked him twice more, just to be SURE, and he said yes, tomorrow you will qualify. One wild card I may have is that I paid full price for the iphone 3G, not sure if that played much of a difference or not. There was no bitching or arguing, I took his name and call center location down for ammo if AT&T gives me **** tomorrow.

Well of course your eligible then. You paid full price!

I by no means think this is a done deal. I am fully prepared to hear a NO WAY from AT&T tomorrow and if that's the case, meh, I'll wait, got my 3G all upgraded to 3.0 so no worries, 300 bucks more in my pocket.

i may wait to go to the att store/call att after the new eligibilities drop - even though i know i won't be covered, it'll be better than hearing 'wait for tmr' etc.

I wish it were that easy. They told me it was Apple's policy that I have a 2 year contract at the point of sale of an iphone. I said that's ******** because if I pay full price for a phone a new 2 year contract should not start. I asked if I bought a blackberry at full price, would at&t start a new 2 year contract and they said no.

If you read the fine print, it is clearly stated that the main line for a Family Plan IS elligable if it is over $99/month. The $9.99 added lines are not. I noticed on my bill that my wife's line was listed as the primary, so I called in and got them to switch it around. It showed up immediately on OLAM. With my data plan, I am now up to $89.99, so I can just add a text plan or something for a month, and I should be good to go. Hope this helps anyone else out there with an FP.

this is still of no help for me..

i bought the iPhone 2G a week after it came out in which i signed up for AT&T, then i bought the iPhone 3G release day waiting 6 hours in line with some friends... my monthly bill is on average about $120+ and still my upgrade date is 12/11/2009.

Am i missing something?

If you are checking your upgrade date online, it's not accurate yet. I read somewhere in the announcement that their system won't be up to date til the 18th. Tomorrow.

I think this is a great opportunity. AT&T was not forced to do this by anyone. If they gave us tethering and MMS now, I would be extremely happy.

I am sure the upgrade pricing matrix is a little more complicated than the $99/line. I am the main line on a 4 phone plan. I bought a 2g on the second day, and the 3G on the fourth day, killing the 2g instead of handing down. I always showed eligibility as 7/12/09, the total bill is $150 plus all the garbage taxes and no one else uses smartphones. We have been customers since 1984, yes, 25 years with SWB Mobile/Cingular/ATT Wireless.

Regardless, I will now order a phone tomorrow from Apple, instead of waiting until 7/12. They will pick up $30 dollars/month when I hand over the old phone to Mom. Actually, I will probably try Wally World Friday morning....where I live there is no 3G so not much demand.

Their "cost" explanation does not always fly

I bought my 16GB iPhone, with a 2-year agreement for the retail price last July. Then, my phone was stolen from the office in November. I got a new phone then, but had to pay full retail AND re-subscribe to a new 2-year agreement. So, if I had to pay full price the second phone, why did I have to subscribe for another 2-years? I think I got screwed. Now I can't upgrade to the new one for a long while.

Just upped my plan to be over the golden 99+ mark monthly. In the system now, let's see what happens, though hopefully they view pre- not-post firm discount, as I am at 48.59 for minutes, 30 for data and 20 for text or 98.59, though true cost is 59.99+30+20. If not, already bought iPhone 3GS, so just have to sell 3G to recoup cash.
