If you read the fine print, it is clearly stated that the main line for a Family Plan IS elligable if it is over $99/month. The $9.99 added lines are not. I noticed on my bill that my wife's line was listed as the primary, so I called in and got them to switch it around. It showed up immediately on OLAM. With my data plan, I am now up to $89.99, so I can just add a text plan or something for a month, and I should be good to go. Hope this helps anyone else out there with an FP.

********tttt. My iPhone should be the main line on my account, but the second line is the main one. Had my iphone been the main line I would be eligible for the 199/299 pricing. The ****ing name for the main line now is different than the name on the account. Come onnnn

Question: the $99 you guys are talking about includes the iphone data plan $30??? I have a family plan and the main line needs to be upped to the $80 family plan +$30 iphone data plan to reach the threshold.

When I change the plan online, does it renew the contract to 2 yrs on ALL the lines? or only the lines I buy a new phone from?

thanks!

"And since many of our iPhone 3G customers are early adopters and literally weeks shy of being upgrade eligible due to iPhone 3G S launching 11 months after iPhone 3G, we're extending the window of upgrade eligibility for a limited time.
We're now pleased to offer our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing, beginning Thursday, June 18."

The reps everyone is talking may not be understanding what AT&T is saying. There is a difference between "upgrade" pricing and "new subscriber" pricing.

. After a year of service 3G buyers are eligible for an upgrade at the $399/$499 prices (not the $199/$299 new subscriber prices). All AT&T appears to be doing is to make all those who would become eligible by the end of September for that "upgrade price" early qualifiers. That's it. The rate will still be $399/$499. I'm not basing this on inside knowledge, just on what the AT&T announcement actually says. I hope someone already brought this up in the previous 260+ posts.

this is so far beyond untrue i don't know where to begin

Update: went to att store. he said he has no idea until tomorrow, but it is NOT case by case, but only done through the system. i mentioned people online calling AT&T and getting that result - he said it's very unlikely and a result of misreading the press release. he also said you had to buy in June, July, or August, and have a plan of $99+. that's a plan, not a bill. my bill is almost $99, but my plan is $80 (data, unlimited text, voice). i think i remain screwed.

Yes you are still screwed. I have been saying this for awhile and most people just got pissed off at me. The plan must be over $99 not the bill. Additionally, they will make some compromises but all the idiots that are trying to raise their final bill over $100 are going to be upset tomorrow. Man I hate when people try to get something for nothing. This whole upgrade early thing shows how pathetic we Americans really have become. I am so ashamed of many of the macrumors forum members.

That's all confusing. If it's only like a month, then it's no big deal. But if they're saying that someone who bought an iPhone 3G in July and signed a two-year contract is getting some one-year break, that's BS. I sat here with this 2G iPhone for 14 months waiting for a 32GB iPHone, knowing I would have to stick with it for 2 years. Bah humbug.

Here's the deal....

AT&T told me they just got a memo at 5pm (whatever their time is)....

All 3g people are eligible for Friday upgrade if their LINE is $99 or more. Period.

If you are the account holder and are at $95, you are screwed but call now and add some text messages to pull up the bill to $99.
If you are under a family plan paying $9.99+30data - temporarily go to an individual plan to get to $99.

I'm the acct. holder at $95. Husband is under me on Family at $45 (9.99+ 30data + 5 sms). I morphed our lines to individual $59.99 phone + 30 data + 15 sms plan. Each one is now at $104. I expect the site to show eligible tomorrow morning. After I get my phone - I will revert back to my Family plan and drop the extra texts.

I confirmed this twice with AT&T as being a good way to deal with this.

This post is so upsetting. She is doing everything to sneak by without paying what others have had to. I almost consider her a thief.

i am going to try and make compromises, but if not, **** happens. i'm not going to go add a higher voice plan to put one bill over $100, because it won't work.

what do you think of people who add a line, buy the iPhone 3GS at 199/299, and cancel it before 30 days to not get an ETF? also thieves? or will just get stuck with charges anyway so who cares?

Ha. Or smart? Actually I called to upgrade our family plan anyway because we've been going over and apparently - they don't count that to the $99. Which I feel is flat out wrong because I've been paying them a fortune.
So all I'm doing is basically getting the same total minutes for both phones - but splitting them equally so we can both get phones.

Which isn't to say I won't be morphing back to the family plan AND lowering the total minutes to somewhere between the individuals and my old fam plan.

From the AT&T FAQ

Does this change only apply to iPhone 3G customers who spend $99 or more per month?
In most cases, yes. iPhone customers who spend more than $99 a month per line with us generally are eligible for an
upgrade between 12 and 18 months. In general, the more a customer spends with us, the less time they have to wait
to get another new device.

What about customers who bought in July, August or September 2008 but don’t spend over
$99 a month?

We value the business of all our customers. The majority of iPhone 3G customers received a significant discount on
their device in return for a two-year service commitment during which time we recoup the device subsidy. Getting a
new subsidized device is based on several factors including monthly recurring charges and having an account in good
financial standing. In general, the more you spend with us, the less time you have to wait to get another device. This
is a very fair system. That said, we do offer early upgrade pricing only for iPhone for those customers who don’t want to wait.

well I have an interesting issue.

I upgrade to the 3G last July
In December my wife opened a line under my account with AT&T and we got the family plan with my iphone 2G.
In March she got a 3G cause the 2G stopped working.
I now check to upgrade my phone and it says December.

The account and all 3 lines are in my name.

Do I have a case here? I have the money for a 3GS 16GB, but I'm not sure if I have an argument or not..anyone?

Okay. My other line (primary) which is a non-iPhone upgrade date says 9/30/2009, so will I be able to use that upgrade tomorrow to get the new iPhone for 199/299

OR

My iPhone line upgrade says 4/30/2010...or will have just have to pay the 399/499 as of now.

I got both of these phones on 8/29/2008.

Can I call ATT and have them make my line the primary line? The name is the same on all the lines?

If I am able to do this I should get the discount?

at&t scam

this to me looks like at&t has lost its exclusivity with the iphone they only have exclusivity till 2010 after that apple is free looks like they couldn't extend the contract till 2011 and by allowing people to upgrade earlier they are just locking my people into 2 year contracts making more money. If they would of extended the license with apple till 2011 i dont think that att would have done this. Owning a family business trust me companies only look for whats in it for them but come up with ways to make the customer feel wanted and appreciated. Those are just my .02

Except since most folks except the top spenders are STILL NOT eligible for the discount, AT&T is only reminding subscribers that they have 1 year left on their commitment.
AT&T's exclusivity runs out next year just in time for the next iPhone model and when most of their iPhone customer's contracts will expire. I guess AT&T is saying that these customers are not worth trying to hold an extra 2 years because they don't spend enough money.

That will be an interesting upgrade cycle :)

Just wait til next year when the next iPhone comes out. Everyone that upgrades today will not be eligible next phone... Is all this worth a "bump in spec?". -- lots of credible reviews out there state iPhone is capable phone but if you already have 3g... There is not a huge advantage.

ok I can't even get through to the AT&T account login:

The proxy server did not receive a timely response from the upstream server.

Best Buy and upgrades

I just left Best Buy.
I pre ordered 3G s for friday.
I mentioned the ATT upgrade change that allows people with 3G iphones and their upgrade date was July, aug or SEPT.

They didnt know this the ONLY bad thing he told me was if ATT doesnt change my upgrade date from July to friday in the computers and only make a note on the account Best Buy cant do my upgrade.

Bummer so sure hope it is a computer upgrade deal.
I guess we will know after midnite if I can see the change to my account then I assume BB can see it.

Trido

Mine was set up the same way. I wasn't sure they would do it, but the woman on the phone said it was no trouble to swap me and my wife and make mine the lead account. Call in and give it a try.

I need to know the same thing. My mother wanted a new phone so she used my line to upgrade. hers says it is eligible in 8/2009. If I am screwed out of $200 because of her, I'll have to let her know to put $200 on my dresser tomorrow morning when I go to buy the Apple gift card I'll be using to purchase my 3GS.
