i just got off the phone with at&t. i was told that since i bought my phone launch day last year im entitled to the upgrade for 3g but not until july.. is that consistent with what everyone else is getting?
oh yeah and as of right now my upgrade date is 3/12/2010

Just upped my plan to be over the golden 99+ mark monthly. In the system now, let's see what happens, though hopefully they view pre- not-post firm discount, as I am at 48.59 for minutes, 30 for data and 20 for text or 98.59, though true cost is 59.99+30+20. If not, already bought iPhone 3GS, so just have to sell 3G to recoup cash.

They look at post FAN discount. Also, as of yet, I have not seen any proof that raising your plan to $99 a month TODAY will make you eligible for the $199/299 upgrade pricing. It is possible that your average monthly bill should be at least $99 per month not just your bill for the present month.

Just got off the phone with the AT&T rep, he said that the requirements for getting the new pricing are:

1) Purchased iPhone 3G between July and September of '08
2) Had an average of at least $99 per month total

(sorry if this has been said, didn't get to read all 8 pages of thread)

Hey guys just got off the phone with AT&T

i am NOT eligible to upgrade until December but the lady was nice and changed my upgrade to now so i can get the price of 199!!!! So call and be nice and you may get lucky like me :D

Except since most folks except the top spenders are STILL NOT eligible for the discount, AT&T is only reminding subscribers that they have 1 year left on their commitment.
AT&T's exclusivity runs out next year just in time for the next iPhone model and when most of their iPhone customer's contracts will expire. I guess AT&T is saying that these customers are not worth trying to hold an extra 2 years because they don't spend enough money.

That will be an interesting upgrade cycle :)

which would make my theory even more clearer because that means that they did the math and only with people spending a 100 dollars a month will they make their money back quickly and then make a profit. I'm sure they weren't able to sign the exclusivity with apple till 2011 (they were in talks to) (also rumored that apple was talking to (verizon)

No I bought mine on July 11th last year at full price and my upgrade eligibility is December but they told me on the phone today as of tomorrow I can get the 199/299 price.

Glad they waited until all the pre-orders were sold out. Now I have to stand in line on Friday at 6am thanks bastards

DESCRIBE what you did to change this.

I wouldn't count on the reps knowing exactly what the deal is today since AT&T appears to be intentionally confusing things. It's really a 2 step process.

First: Determine upgrade qualifying date. AT&T says that those who spend over $99/month on plan for the phone qualify for upgrade in 12 to 18 months. That sounds like those who spend $99 qualify in 18 months and those who spend more (maybe $135 or more, since that's another $210 in 6 months) qualify in 12 months. Sliding scale in between.

Second: Once your qualifying date is determined, if that date falls in July, August or September, then you're eligible to upgrade at the new subscriber rate immediately. That's the deal announced today. Up to a 3 month jump start for last year's big plan spenders.

Call and plead that you bought the iphone early and you think you deserve an upgrade and if you get a nice person you will get it

would you get the same outcome if you went to an AT&T corporate store instead of calling? I live near a corporate store, and minutes away from the regional headquarters (upstate NY).

Anyone know if its possible to have a friend that is now eligible for the upgrade pricing, but not interested in getting the 3GS (wants to stay with his 3G) buy one for me to use on my account? I currently have a 3G, but won't be eligible for upgrade pricing till Dec. Could he buy it and I just place my sim card in it and then link it to my account replacing my current 3G?

So there is a lot of conflicting information spreading around.

Some people are saying that you simply have to have a $99 or higher LINE, some people are saying it has to be $99 or higher including text messages and any other extras, and some people (who are only eligible to upgrade until March and pay less than $99) have been able to call AT&T and get the 199/299 price.

How easy is it to upgrade and downgrade your rate plan? I'm thinking of just upgrading my rate plan to the unlimited $99 and see if I'm eligible for the upgrade tomorrow. If this doesn't work, is it easy to downgrade? I read that the only thing that happens is you love your rollover minutes, but other than that, it's easy.

For those of you that are not upgrade eligible before September and are not paying $99 or higher, what do you plan on doing?

If you could get the lower price and bought an iPhone 3GS, what can you do with your old iPhone 3G?

I assume its no longer under contract by AT&T.
Can you use it on AT&T without a data plan?
Can you sell it?
Can you use it as an iPod touch?

i am not sure

its worth a try :D

im frustrated, from my post a little while ago..

My mother wanted a new phone so she used my line to upgrade. hers says it is eligible in 8/2009. If I am screwed out of $200 because of her, I'll have to let her know to put $200 on my dresser tomorrow morning when I go to buy the Apple gift card I'll be using to purchase my 3GS.

Assuming I'm not deemed upgrade eligible by AT&T, I'll wait until next year. The iPhone 3GS is faster but not much different from the phone I already have.

Next year AT&T exclusivity runs out.
Everyone who bought an iPhone 3G 2yr contract will run out.
Apple with have yet another newer better iPhone much better to upgrade to.

Maybe the fear of competition will light a fire under AT&T next year.
I have no complaints with AT&T customer service. Just the coverage is pathetic. I get poor to no coverage at my house, my mothers house and my mother-in-law's house. Basically I don't get coverage most places I spend time. Verizon, Sprint, Alltel have great coverage here.

Hey cool.. And with the new copy and paste in 3.0.... It made this post even easier!

true that, and thanks for your helpfulness in your post :D

im praying for the best tomorrow. if everyone seems to be having an easy time with getting eligible for this, I'm thinking it wont be too hard. My dad's been a customer since the early 90s when they were Cellular One or whatever, and has never missed a payment.

Agreed. I plan on just keeping my 3G phone for another year until the next phone OR just seeing what is out there come next year at this time iPhone wise....as in whether I can sign onto another carrier or not.

I really am not that upset at missing out on this phone. As long as the coverage gets better, I am happy.

I love the iPhone and Apple but dealing with AT&T is so bad, I am not sure I can put it into words. I never thought phone coverage could be so bad and I have dealt with it in 3 different major cities with 2 different 3G phones.

Call and plead that you bought the iphone early and you think you deserve an upgrade and if you get a nice person you will get it

Why would someone "deserve" the upgrade?

I bought the first 2 iPhones the day they came out. I am not eligible for the upgrade and that is fine. I don't deserve anything except what I got and what I signed contract-wise.

The only thing people deserve is what they agreed to and their current phone is what they got and "deserve"

Here's the email I got from AT&T today:

Good news about your iPhone 3G S early upgrade pre-order! We realize that many of our customers who bought iPhone 3G last July, would now like to have the most recent iPhone technology as soon as it’s available, at the lowest upgrade price. As a result, beginning Friday, June 19, 2009, we’re offering all iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August, or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing.

Since you have already placed your online pre-order, we will credit you for the difference between the standard upgrade price - $199 (16 GB) or $299 (32 GB) - and the price that you paid online.

What to expect

Once your order ships, your credit card will be charged the early upgrade price shown in your order confirmation email
AT&T will credit the difference back onto the method of payment used during the online purchase (i.e. MasterCard®, VISA®, etc.)

No need to call – this will automatically occur after we’ve successfully shipped and processed the original transaction. You can expect the credit within three days after your order has shipped from our warehouse.

AT&T greatly values your business. We hope that you enjoy your new Apple iPhone 3G S and the network that offers you best global coverage!

Thank you for your pre-order,

All at AT&T

I really just don't like verizon. but whateva, that's me... Alright looks like I can buy a 3gs for dirt cheap because I just sold my iPhone 3G 16GB for $240.
:D

Seriously?? $240?? you should've gone for much more! I just sold mine for $400!!! Next time make sure to bump up the cost.

don't worry, with god on your side I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. It will actually give him an excuse for not helping all those starving children in Africa.

"what...ohhh...yea, sorry about all those kids, yea droughts are tough. Where was I? I was uh, busy. With what? I was making sure an AT&T rep hooked up jasonsav with an early upgrade on the iPhone 3GS! Hey man, some things are just more important, it's got a digital compass and video for christ's sake!'

I Qualify for the 199 pricing!!! (thats what the apple website says).

Will these only be available at an apple store friday morning? Or Can i go to an att store early? Att opens at 9am. When the 3G came out when did people start going there? 5am? 6am? Also, when i get to the part about purchasing the iphone 3gs on the web site it never loads. Is this because they are sold out? overloaded? what.?
