Update

I just called AT&T a 2nd time and they told me I should go into one of the AT&T stores, that sometimes the system doesn't update eligibility and the store will be able to see how long you've been on your contract and how much your bill is/has been for the life of the contract and can manually override the eligibility to allow you to get the $199/$299 pricing. The telephone reps don't have the ability to override eligibility.

SO.. my advice to you all is to go into the AT&T store in person.

That's exactly what they told me, go into the physical AT&T store.

I am very confused as well

I seem to have gotten 3 different answers from them.

I am just going to hold tight until something definite comes out which I think WILL happen in the next day or two.

AT&T has to know how many people are confused

Where are you getting these eligible dates from? Online or over the phone?
My online date isn't budging at all not matter what I've done to tweak things.
I'm still at December.

Want to hear something fun? An AT&T supervisor told me emphatically yesterday that "Everyone with a 3g are not eligible on Friday. Period". I said "so you are actually telling me the millions and millions of people who have a 3g have to pay through the nose on Friday if they want one?" "Yes". LOL I hate them all.

seriously? have you read ANYTHING?

if your pre-tax post-discount PLAN is $99+ PER LINE it's 199/299, else it's 399/499.

No you are wrong, I bought mine the day it came out and my bills are 85-87 dollars a month and I qualify for the 199/299 price tag.

Anyone else not able to check iPhone upgrade possibility on their AT&T account? It doesn't work for me on their website (says not available at this time for JUST my iphone line) and then when I do the *639# I get a "Try again later message"... Why do some people know already and other accounts haven't updated yet?

Because we picked up the phone and called AT&T. I haven't been able to check my upgrade status online for over a day now.

I asked this question earlier and am still waiting for an answer: If I buy the iPhone with a new account and new number (at the price of 199), am I required to use it on that number? Or can I take it home and sync it up using an existing ATT number that may or not be eligible for the cheapest prices phone?

I understand that I would be required to pay a minimum 9.99 per month for a "dead" phone number line, but I can cancel it in 8 months when I would have been eligible. Still saving about $120.

Confusing?

I just had the most horrible experience checking for eligibility with AT&T. The rep was telling me it was for owners of the iPhone (NOT 3G) who has owned it for 20 months (impossible for 3G owners this way). He was swearing up and down it was NOT for the 3G, and doesn't matter how much money you spend per month on your line (I'm over $100 on my line of family plan). After talking with him a bit and trying to teach him how to do his job and him getting irritated with me asking him to check again with the policy, I asked for his supervisor.

While on hold for the supervisor about 10 minutes in, he comes back and tells me I was right as he JUST got an email detailing how it works. Said I'd be eligible, and I should call Apple after I get it to have a check mailed to me. Got all his info, along with about 15 apologizes. So now I expect to have a problem with Apple getting it approved.

The lady I spoke with this morning said to go into an AT&T store to buy it and not an Apple store because they don't have access to the same info and don't have the ability to override upgrade prices. She also stated that Apple reserves the right to deny the upgrade price. Strange that it seems like AT&T is showing Apple how customer service is supposed to go, did I just say that?

haha people at AT&T are confused as well. Different reps telling people completely different things. I will hold out as well

I actually called both AT&T and Apple about this because my friend might be switching from his current borrowed account to his own name, and I might get 3GS from his current account.

The answer was: there is no problem doing this (Using the phone with different account), and also Apple will honer the warranty without a problem.

I do not know about 9.99 per month strategy, but that might be a good idea.

Yep, I'm in the same boat. I bought my iPhone 3G on launch day in July -- system says I'm not eligible for an upgrade until 12/12/09.

I'm just gonna reply to myself here. An AT&T rep helped me...because I don't spend over $99 on my plan, I'm not eligible. I think somehow I missed that part on the announcement from yesterday. You have to be a customer that is on a plan that's $99+ to be eligible.

Makes sense I guess.
