Then explain to me how I have been so lucky to be eligible for an upgrade with each new release?

Bought 1st ever iPhone in August 2007 - 4GB 1st Gen
Eligible for 3G, bought one on launch day - July 11th
Eligible for 3Gs, will buy one tomorrow....

I see a pattern emerging....

That's just it, you've been lucky. You were eligible for the 3G on launch day because the first gen iphone was not subsidized and you are eligible for the 3Gs because AT&T decided to cave in. Nice pattern you have there.

Looks like my (and for some of you) best option is cancel the current account and pay termination fee of $120 (depends on remaining contract term), then buy 3GS with 199/299 price tag. Including termination/activation fees, you'll still save about $300 this way.

Of course this is only if you don't care changing the number, and you might have to pay deposit on new account depending on your payment history/credit though.

Luck? You think that I have been lucky? You are correct about the upgrade from 1st gen to 3G -- actually forgot about that because I did pay $499 for a 4GB back in '07.

However, it just seems to me that At&t is hooking up there early adopters...

a fairly small percentage of their early adopters. many others and i are screwed still.

They very well could be but depending on a company to do that is a slippery slope.

This is pretty cool of AT&T to do. I didn't expect them to offer this. I don't know if they will do that in the future for future upgrades. I do not qualify yet, I waited a few months to upgrade from the 1st gen to the 3G. But, I doubt I will upgrade until next year's new iphone.

and AT&T isn't doing this to be nice to the early adopters, they are doing it to make money, plain and simple. They wouldn't be doing this if they weren't turning a profit.

Does anyone still not show an upgrade even though it looks like under the new guidelines you can? Mine still says upgrade eligible 7/09. Just curious.

I'm a little confused... I had the 2G phone then Purchased the 3G phone on July 15th ( I do have an average bill over $90) but my Upgrade elegibility date still says 12/15/09 (normal 18 month window).

I thought that if you purchased the phone between July and Sept you are eligible?

I called AT&T and he said the system will update my status IF I am eligible but it wont update until tomorrow the 19th when the phone officially launches... huh?

anyone have any insight on this one?

Well i still cannot upgrade !!! i bought my 3G last july an i spent more than 120 $ a month on AT&T ( 1800$ in 11 month) and they still tell me that i need to pay the full upgrade price.
Well they are telling me that i do not satisfy the monthly recurring charges requirement because i am short of 2 cents. My monthly charge are 98.98$ i won't let this go that's stupid !
Thanks

Funny thing is my upgrade date is the end of my contract HOWEVER, I started a new contract last March (canceled the old one due to being on my ex fiance's phone plan.)

Strange.

So from my point of view what it comes down to is the subset of early adopters (like myself) who have the base phone package (450 minutes) are the ones that are getting the "shaft" from AT&T. Our packages don't add up to the magic (and strangely arbitrary in my view) $99 mark (even with unlimited text I'm about $10 shy pre-tax after tax I'm right there). Anyone else who has the bigger packages appear to be getting the full discount prices. Its sad that AT&T would choose to effectively screw over a subset of the early adopters. I do understand its business and phone companies are out to make money... but this really puts me in the "Hope AT&T fails to get the exclusivity contract extended" camp. Even tho.. the next company will be using the same, in my opinion, underhanded tactics.

Mine says the same thing, I called AT&T this morning and Clarin said I would be eligible and then I called my local AT&T store and the guy who answered said I wouldn't be able to know untill tomorrow. I purchased my 3g on launch day last year at the Oakbrook Il Apple Store and have an upgrade date of December 12th.

i think if i don't get this upgrade i'd rather pay the extra $9.99 a month to add a line, use the iPhone 3GS as my main line, and just keep the $9.99 charge on there dormant...

because i don't think i will be able to 30 day cancel with no ETF like some people do - i think if i do that, it's straight to full price land with me.

I bought my iphone 3G on launch day last July, but for some reason my upgrade date is December 2009. What gives AT&T?? Anyone else?

after being promised i will be eligible on the phone yesterday afer buying my 3g on launch day.. i wake up to see olam wasnt showing me as eligble.. and now at&t is saying that im not after all.. so now i had this issue "escalated" even past customer relations and their manager because going by the Press release term, I am eligible.

Yep, I'm in the same boat. I bought my iPhone 3G on launch day in July -- system says I'm not eligible for an upgrade until 12/12/09.

I too bought my 3G on July 11th last year (launch day) and AT&T is telling me my contract didn't start until July 13th... f'd up system! So my eligibility date for the $199/$299 pricing on the 3G is December 13, 2009... BUT.. what is rediculous is my monthly plan is $59.99 plus $30 data and $20 unlim text... so my bill before tax is $109.99.. I've paid them $1,209.99 in the 11 months since launch day... yet I'm still not eligible for the new customer upgrade pricing until Dec? Shady is what I call it.
