I'm just gonna reply to myself here. An AT&T rep helped me...because I don't spend over $99 on my plan, I'm not eligible. I think somehow I missed that part on the announcement from yesterday. You have to be a customer that is on a plan that's $99+ to be eligible.

Makes sense I guess.

NO YOU DO NOT. If people actually read the threads here they would see that is not the case. My bills are 85-87 bucks a month and I qualify. READ!

Fine then sit and bitch and complain rather than doing something about it.

what the **** are you talking about?

#1 - did you call the *NEW# number or not? was your eligibility actually updated?

#2 - called AT&T and went in person to a store yesterday.

why is the reaction of everyone on this forum to any post they don't like to say "BITCH AND COMPLAIN LOL HURRRRR"

ON EDIT: do you REALLY qualify or did a rep just tell you that? manager at ATT said that notes mean nothing.

I was answering about getting new account/pay $9.99 inactive plan, and thought about this:

If you get a 3GS with new account and pay $199/$299 (plus tax and activation fee of $38), then cancel this new account and pay $175 termination fee. Then nothing will stop me from using 3GS with my current account, right?

It's still much cheaper than paying full price of $599/$699 (plus tax and activation fee of $18)

And this way, I'm not extending the contract on my current account so I can upgrade next year at discount price.

Anyone see any holes in this approach??

No I'm just making this all up, you caught me.

I asked this question earlier and am still waiting for an answer: If I buy the iPhone with a new account and new number (at the price of 199), am I required to use it on that number? Or can I take it home and sync it up using an existing ATT number that may or not be eligible for the cheapest prices phone?

I understand that I would be required to pay a minimum 9.99 per month for a "dead" phone number line, but I can cancel it in 8 months when I would have been eligible. Still saving about $120.

Confusing?

Not only will you need to pay the $9.99 for the additional line per month, but since the line you're adding is an iPhone, you will also be required to pay for the data plan and text plan... so it wouldn't just be $9.99 per month. (You're signing a 2 year contract to get the iPhone at the cheapest price, but it's not just a regular 2 year contract, it's a 2 year iPhone contract... which requires you to carry a data and text plan.) Just pay the $200 extra if you want to upgrade early.

i will have the answer to this tonight when i visit with my att rep.

Actually I had asked about this too earlier. Its for my son on my account who has a four month Nokia (which replaces a lost phone). He is not eligible until April for the 199. price. An ATT store guy suggested I add a third new line and then not use one of the lines, paying the 9.95 per month. I could then dump one line in April and NOT pay the early termination fee, only paying about 9 months of 9.99. Savings of about $120 over buying now for 399.

My question (still unanswered) is can I use the phone I buy with a new added line on the old number I already have and simply not use the new one or do we have to activate it using the new line?

I understand about the data & text plan etc, I would have to pay that anyway. But even with paying 9.95 on a "dead' line for nine months. I get this phone for 199. rather than 399. With the nine months of the dead line plan its a net win of $120. And yes whatever I pay for a new phone I know I still have to pay for the iPhone plan.

I'm not eligible. :( I'm not in any rush to get the 3G S though, so I think I'll be okay just with my phone + 3.0. The only three things of the new phone that interests me are the camera, voice control, and the compass, but I think I'll live.

Just talked to ATT&T and they had no idea what I was talking about. They kept telling me about utilizing the return if I just bought it. They did not understand about me purchasing in July of last year. She just kept saying the same thing over and over and over so I finally gave up. Worthless.

imagine that, someone who posts that they are the only one that has been exempted from a policy that contains clear bright-line rules can't back it up.

Im hardly the only one that has been approved for an upgrade that doesn't spend more that 99 bucks per month. Once again, read the god damn threads and you would have seen that you dolt.

I wouldn't give up, they told me the first time I called I wasn't eligible but the next two people said I was.

ive called at least 10 times since noon yesterday got mixed answers from all. grrrrrr
id be fine even if theyd let me upgrade in july-september shoot i just want that 3gs and i wouldnt need to get the next iphone next year.. (unless its earth shattering :D )

i've read absolutely all of them, including on 6 other forums.

there are two people claiming this, one of which bought an unsubsidized 3G.

you refuse to provide proof that would be quite simple, and your assertion is in the face of pretty incontrovertible proof - press release from AT&T says you are wrong, AT&T reps on the phone say you are wrong, AT&T reps in store say you are wrong, AT&T manager in store says you are wrong.

but i should take you at your word, rite?

6? I could count about 20-30 in this thread alone that have said they called AT&T and have been told differently

Also on AppleInsider there are others saying the exact same thing

If you choose not to read them, so be it but apparently people are being told other things.

Is that $85-87 after discounts? Maybe they look at if your plan is $99+ before discounts and taxes.

I bought 3G July 11th, standard $40 plan, $30 data, then 20% discount, and the ATT online shows still March 2010 for upgrade as it did weeks ago. I'm not really in a rush to get 3Gs, so I haven't called ATT or gone to a store.

Also, what kind of plan did someone have to be eligible in December before all of this hoopla, let alone July-Aug-Sept?

Lets wait for xerenthar to decide if you are right.

were you told in-store or on the phone? was it just 'noted to your account' or was your eligibility on myWireless/*NEW# actually changed?

yeah, i'm dumb. i'm the one who refuses to verify his assertion and says "blow me."

wait, nope.

Im upgrade eligible on July 6th 2009 but when i check if i am eligible today it still says July 6th? I have never owned an iphone either and this will be my first, anyone know whats goin on?
