I ordered my 32gb iphone 3Gs (white) via the premiere site on the 15th for 499.

I heard about this new update yesterday and today called the premiere customer support and asked her about this new plan and asked her to check if I was eligible for the lower priced upgrade. She initially told me it was only for people who bought their iphone 3G in the last couple months but after a few minutes on hold she figured out what I was talking about.

She then put me on hold for 10 or so more minutes and came back and told me I was eligible for the 299 price on the phone and would note this in my account info and pass me on to the sales reps. (My bill is generally 80 a month, I purchased my phone on launch day and I also purchased the previous iphone on launch day).

After 20 more minutes of being on hold waiting for a premiere sales rep, I went through the same talk with her and she told me she needed to escalate this for the 200 dollar credit to be issued. After 10 or so more minutes on hold she informed me that the order had been updated and i'd be getting a credit in no more than 2 weeks.

Besides all the holding it was one of my better customer service experiences.

god the inconsistency hurts my brain

Does this change only apply to iPhone 3G customers who spend $99 or more per month?

"In most cases, yes. iPhone customers who spend more than $99 a month per line with us generally are eligible for an upgrade between 12 and 18 months. In general, the more a customer spends with us, the less time they have to wait to get another new device."

It says "generally." Since when does that mean you MUST spend more than $99?

The other thing that I think everybody is forgetting to think about... when you signed up for the 2 year contract for the subsidized iPhone 3G... which one did you get, 8GB or 16GB??? There's a difference in cost and that is why some people under the new eligibility still aren't eligible to upgrade until December (myself included) I bought the 16GB iPhone 3G on July 11th last year, and my eligibility for upgrade at $199/299 is December 12, 2009... even though my bill each month before tax is $109.99... because I purchased the 16GB instead of the 8GB, I don't fit into the new early window that they came up with in yesterday's press release. That is the reason AT&T says you MAY qualify for early upgrade 12-18 months into your 24 month contract. Depends on which phone you bought and how much money you spend per month with them. 16GB takes longer to pay back the amount AT&T subsidized on it compared to the 8GB.

As for the other question about wheather or not you can use the iPhone purchased with line #3 on line #1... yes, AT&T will activate the new 3G with the sim chip from line #1.

confused

I read this: "While today's big news has been the release of iPhone OS 3.0, AT&T today also announced that it is expanding the eligibility window for determining which customers are eligible for upgrade pricing on the iPhone 3G S. Customers who previously would not have become upgrade eligible until July, August or September of this year will instead qualify for AT&T's lowest upgrade pricing as of tomorrow, making them eligible to purchase the iPhone 3G S at the $199 (16 GB) or $299 (32 GB) price point at launch. Affected customers will save $200 on the purchase of a new iPhone 3G S as a result." But I've called and looked online and have been told time and time again that I'm not eligible until 7/27/09.

Am I missing something here?

I went into my AT&T store about 30 minutes ago and one of the district managers for the Bay Area happened to be in the store and said AT&T's system actually WILL NOT show updated eligibility until tomorrow.. despite the press release AND macrumors showing today as the date when eligibility would be updated.

Also... I think some are misinterpreting the message from AT&T... if you previously SHOWED you were eligible for the upgrade in July/August/September, than you now will actually be eligible tomorrow on release day... but if you previously or currently show you are eligible in a month AFTER September, than your eligibility will not change. NO where does the press release say you'll be eligible if you PURCHASED your iPhone in July/August/September of last year!! Reread the release folks!

If this is in fact the reason that I, a July of 2008 purchaser that spends $100+ and month and is in good standing, have a December 2009 eligibility date then fine. I just want AT&T to say it. I don't want special treatment- just more clarity on AT&T's part.

You being told the system won't upgrade till tomorrow gives me some hope but 2 told me over the phone it was to upgrade today. Who knows.

Re the memo. I was on the phone before the memo came out to us and was told those who BOUGHT the phone July/Aug/Sept - are golden. Yes, I was told wrong (again). She suggested I ramp up my accounts to $99 or over each and that should work from what she was told at 5pm her time.

I did it as a test LOL Otherwise, I'm a December and husband is March '10. Those dates have yet to change post updating both accounts to over $99 and prorated back to July 15.

think

The only thing I can think of after careful reading and review is that I do not already own an iphone. My upgrade status to get from a normal phone to an iphone with the lowest discount possible on the phone was July 27th, has been for months now.

Am I correct that I must already have purchased and iphone?

We're definitely in the same boat! Since I added a new line last week and received the $199 price for the 3G, I'm sticking with 16GB... no sense in getting the 32GB... I've had about 6GB of free space on my 16GB 3G the entire year I've had it and want to ensure I'm upgrade eligible a year from now when Apple decides to come out with the 4th generation iPhone. Had I bought the 8GB last year, I would have been able to upgrade tomorrow without adding a new line. As for AT&T... they're not about to put in writing the reason some 3G customers can upgrade tomorrow... yet others have to wait until December is partly because of which phone/how much their subsidy was last year.. they get around that with the '12-18 month' window.

Upgrade live already

I just logged into the Apple Website and put in my number. It did not show me eligible yesterday but when I logged in today it showed me
the full subsidized pricing. I was going to order online but I think I will just go to the Apple Store on Saturday to pick one up. I don't think they will be out but if they are I guess I will have to wait. I was eligible at 7/12/09 but looks like it is live in the system. Thats funny you guys mentioning 8GB or 16GB purchase because I bought a 16GB white 3G at launch and am still eligible for upgrade

I logged into Apple. Showing me $600 or $700 till 12/19. OMFG

(bought 1st gen & 2nd gen at launches).

Where did you enter in your number? I went to ATT put in my number and checked my upgrade eligibility and got this response "iPhone Upgrade
As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price, along with a 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please proceed with the online upgrade process for pricing details. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 07/27/2009
Am I missing a step or something?

Just figured out I needed to go to APPLE to try it. Not eligible until July. I give up.

Grr...

Of course it's bold in the block quote from the press release but the MacRumor story text doesn't emphasize that this is just for current iPhone 3G owners. I skimmed this yesterday and interpreted that anyone who would be eligible for an upgrade in July, August or September could get the full subsidy. I have a BlackJack and I'm not eligible until July unless I try to haggle with someone. :(

I made the same mistake. :(

I'm on the phone (again) with AT&T. She's telling me what my other lady said last night. All phones PURCHASED July, Aug, Sept are golden. Sigh.

I told her that until my date changes on my screen - I don't believe it and Apple will see the same dates and charge more. She says I'm eligible despite my date being December. Says the system should've updated early this morning. She wants to fix this for me. I'm on hold.......

..... She gets back on the line, says "purchase date (3g launch) & $99 or more". Says emphatically I'm eligible. I say "but my online date hasn't changed, I can't believe anything till I see the date changed and Apple store will see that date and it won't work. They aren't going to look at "notes" saying I'm OK. I'm on hold......

..... She says she can't manually change the dates but can create a case that the upgrades on my online checker are wrong and put in an escalate saying I meet all requirements and the online checker is wrong and needs immediate correction to the correct date (tomorrow). Says technically this takes UP TO 72 hours but may be done sooner. I have a case number and

NOTE: Yesterday I morphed the phones off Family to 2 individuals and made them as close to $99 as possible. ($104.99). At the time I was told this would work. Today's call found the rep instantly seeing $99+ on both accounts which seems to make them happy. This is the 2nd rep since yesterday afternoon to claim the PURCHASE of old phone has to be July, Aug, Sept... not UPGRADE DATE of July, Aug, Sept. I'm taking it. Do I believe it'll happen. Hell no. But I have hope. She was very nice.

one indicates the only requirement is purchasing a phone in those three months, the other adds the 99/line requirement.

Read it again. She says phones purchased July/Aug/Sept and the line is $99 or more. That's what I said if you read beyond the first line.
