Dont take everything ONE At&t rep tells you for the truth. I once had a bunch of them telling me I COULD NOT use the WiFi on my Blackberry withOUT data??!!

Anyway, just upgrading to a 3G iPhone on one or two of the lines and singing "a new 2-year contract" will most likely NOT change your rate plan, those rate plans are most likely for NEW customers. It seems the same whenever your upgrade with At&t, your contract is extended, but your RATE plan remains the same. That's why unless you actually change your rate plan you can continue to be grandfathered from year to year on some realllllly old rate plan. The "new" 2-year contract will probably just extend your contract lenght, not actually change your rate plan.

This is what happened to me when upgrading in the past and I dont plan it to be different. I spoke to a few At&t reps and they all told me my rate plan would not change. I have the Nation 550 Family plan with my iPhone as the SECOND line (non-iphone has primary) and when I add the 3G to my 2ndary line I do not plan that changing the rate plan on the primary phone.

To run a sanity check, I called one of our local stores (first call was to Business Care 800 #). The rep at the store says they are trying to get clarification on the "requirement" for existing Family Talk plan customers to "upgrade" to new Family Talk plan when choosing the iPhone 3G. I'm supposed to call back tomorrow. This should be interesting.

I completely agree. With my iPhone 1G - Internet connection? Check. Mapping software? Check. Faster download times for news, rumors and weather just doesn't get me thrilled. Neither does A-GPS. I will gladly sit this one out and wait for the 32 gig (at least, hopefully more) and some other hardware improvements before lining up again.

I know, who needs cable when you can be surfing on a 28k modem? Woo hoo!

The ridiculously low level of reading comprehension being displayed in this thread is down right hilarious.

I didn't think it was possible for people to be so dense...

I hate to admit it and sound like a jerk but I agree. It makes me glad I don't have to work at a cellphone store and explain plans and their features to people.

I was strongly thinking of dropping Sprint and getting an iPhone. The cost was going to be significantly more then what I am paying now but looking at the plans is really makes me feel like AT&T are trying to nickle and dime people. The unlimited data pack should come with some text messages.

Anyone have any idea...

Anyone know if they're going to be offering a 500 or 550 minute family plan for the iPhone 3G like they were with the previous iPhone? I've tried calling twice, and the first person I got was positively HIGHER than a KITE. The second time I called, I got someone coherent, and then was promptly disconnected. I'm trying to get out of this whole deal with a family plan, 2 iPhone 3Gs with few minutes and unlimited text, at 139.99 or lower. I WAS going to do the iPhone 3G data-only plan, but they have a prerequisite of having a speech or hearing disability for those plans, with documented proof. (My father is deaf and I'm involved in deaf ministry, if any were wondering why I wanted data-only. I have no use for voice plans. The second line will be for a hearing person also.)

At&t

Those that have AT&T internet service should realize that criticizing AT&T on 'their' internet service is a violation of 'your' rules and conditions.

Big brother IS watching you...

I was not asking you to point me what 1,000,000 fanboys have posted. I would just like someone to admit that the 3G phone costs more.

I agree with your sentiment. While we can disect "affordable" into a word that accounts for a purchase over time while in comparison to other devices while the planets are aligned yet before the ice caps melt and so on, it is completely reasonable to hear Jobs say "more affordable" and expect that the total cost of a new iPhone 3G with required plan will be less than a new iPhone 1G with required plan.

Sorry folks. It just isn't worth it. I've enjoyed my iPhone tremendously, but being partners with AT&T just isn't worth it at any price. I don't know who is behind AT&T anymore. Who ever it is they just purchased the name. AT&T was bad then they are bad now. They have the worst customer service, support, pricing, and technology development. The AT&T iPhone contract is only one I've ever felt so uncomfortable with that I read it word for word. Apple is in bed with the devil. AT&T could give their service away for free and it still wouldn't be worth it. "It's not what it cost to buy, it's what it cost to keep." We consumers and Apple are being exploited by AT&T. I feel badly for Apple.

Apple if you are listening, drop AT&T like a hot rock.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8320/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Dammit, I have to be at work at 8, why couldn't make it later?

Does anybody know if I choose the Family plan 700 minutes I can get it cheaper for just 1 iPhone?

I want iPhone for me and my wife just a regular phone without data. Would that be cheaper $30?

I currently have a 700-min Family Plan with a first-generation iPhone and Samsung. The latter has the data plan omitted so it is less than the former. Total monthly cost with taxes is about $95.

New pricing is insane!

So now the 200 texts aren't free? That's really stupid of them.
Technically they weren't free in the iPhone 2G either.

Yes. AT&T's plan (and it says it on the site and press release) assumes you are buying 2 iPhone 3G's.

ATT treats text like a luxury, it's their biggest fault to me. Rollovers (thanks Cingular!) are fantastic, and I have no complaints about coverage. But they sell texts like it's a luxury that only special people need.

I think I'll just keep my 1st Gen and live without the 3G. Unless my plan will suddenly change as well just because? It shouldn't change if I don't upgrade, right?

Wow, nothing like a good set of newbies... Um, ok, the back WILL be plastic, this is not a rumor. I repeat it WILL be plastic, this is NOT a rumor.

And just for reference, I think you guys should start at www.apple.com ;)

Wow no need to insult. Thanks for clarifying though. Sorry, didn't think to check apple cuz I had only seen the claims on here. It was either saying rumor or saying it was plastic and getting blasted for spreading rumors. ;)

Seriously....

OK.. let me put it out there that I am not an iPhone user and I soooooo badly want to be but I think that AT&T is the worst here in the North East.. I have never seen a company provide such poor service yet claim to have "More bars in more places"...

Anyway.. I digress and I apologize... One thing that I really think is odd is having to pay for txt messages on top of internet and email... I really just think they are getting very greedy... Agree or disagree.... Just my opinion...

Bill

Yes, Individual Text Plans Available on Family Plan

JUST got off the phone with AT&T (moving 2 AT&T for iPhone 3G (from T-Mobile))....

YES: You can select a Family Plan (I'll have 2 iPhones going on a Family Plan) and then SELECT EITHER the Family Unlimited Text Plan ($30 for all/both in my case) or you can choose to add the $5 or $15 Text Plan to EITHER or BOTH lines.

I'll be doing the $129 Family Plan (700 minutes)
Adding in 2 x $5 Text Plans (we don't text very much),

for a total of $139 + the taxes and misc. charges.

Like everyone, don't like paying extra for the text messages, but this total is about what I was expecting.

NOW<> White or Black (16 GB, of course!)

they are not being greedy...its a completely separate service. i could see if you needed data to send the text messages, but since they go over the cellular network i do not see why they should be included in the data plan. no data plans include texts.

What is your point? That I am not actually content with Edge? Thanks for letting me know. I'll make a note to self.

Please do.

But really, I was just pointing out the inertia that people have with regards to technology. Have you owned a 3G phone, by any chance? Because I had before the iPhone, and it was a bit painful going back to just EDGE. It was worth it for the other things, but I *think* it's possible you're underestimating how big of an upgrade 3G is over EDGE.

Because I have read at least 2 peoples posts that said they called AT&T and they were told that they could not simply add the iPhone 3G to their current family plan. They are required to get a new Family plan. Thats why.

That's just simply wrong. "I just spoke to an At&t Representative..." absolutely means nothing these days..

And then do what? Go with Verizon? Verizon's data plans are MORE EXPENSIVE than ATT Yes, if the iPhone were on Verizon, it would be more expensive, just like Blackberrys are more expensive on Verizon!
God people, get over the 15 dollars a month, this pricing is the same thing blackberry users have been paying for years!!!

For those of us wondering... I just talked to an AT&T business sales rep who confirmed that, because the phone isn't "special" anymore (her words) FAN discounts WILL apply for service ONLY, not equipment, just service.

I know this had been tossed around when we first found out the iPhone was no longer being treated differently than other phones, but now I got someone to say it. So, hopefully it pans out... (I could really use that 25% off :D)

Because it includes 2 iPhone lines. Do the math people, geez.

Thanks,
That's what I was hoping for. Sorry honey, no iPhone or you! :D
