This news was expected and frankly I'm underwhelmed by the whole deal. I remember last June when I couldn't wait to stand in line to purchase the groundbreaking 1st gen iPhone. All in all I'm still quite happy with my 1st gen, and the edge speeds are acceptable here in So Cal, considering most of my usage is from WiFi settings. Considering the 2.0 iPhone software upgrade adds much more functionality and usability, I think I'll pass purchasing the new phone. I just don't see that much added value in the 3G version.

will i be eligible for the sub price of the phone? i assume equipment mean phone and not um equipment for the phone... thanks for your reply.

"This line is eligible for reduced equipment pricing when you sign up for a new 2-year service agreement. All iPhone purchases require a 2-year service commitment."

Same here.
I'm a 1st gen iPhone user.
When I check availability, I see the following:

This line is eligible for equipment discount pricing when you sign up for a 2-year service agreement. You can take advantage of our no-commitment pricing option, with the exception of iPhone which requires a 2-year commitment.

Now, I always scored low in reading comprehension (hence my turn to art school - where such perspectives are encouraged)... but to me, this indicates that I can upgrade to the 3G iPhone with a new 2-year contract.

Am I wrong?

To the poster complaining about the 3G iPhone being plastic. This is an engineering solution to improve reception. The metal back on the current phone reduces reception and would also interfere with 3G. Also, like everything else there are grades of plastic... the plastic you find on a Chevy isn't the same you'll see in a Bimmer. Same goes for Apple. When they do use plastic it looks and feels good, not like a $1 bauble from Target.

borrow someones iphone?

what if i borrow someones iphone from someone that has upgraded? will i be able to upgrade to a 3G iphone because i am now an existing iphone user?

Because I have read at least 2 peoples posts that said they called AT&T and they were told that they could not simply add the iPhone 3G to their current family plan. They are required to get a new Family plan. Thats why.

http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/specials/iPhone.jsp

Read the 6th bullet down.

Sheesh, this thread is a trainwreck of misinformation.

I have a 550 minute family plan which is 59.99. I've had it for ages and I've never been forced to upgrade. I'll add an iphone 3g to that making it 89.99 and also a 4.99 text message plan making it somewhere around $95.

Now...I'll also receive a 15% discount, so that'll work out to around $80.75 before taxes. I currently pay around $85 after taxes, so that'll be pretty nice...not much of an increase for me.

Before you go an flame, AT&T is treating the iPhone like any other phone, so you should be able to get a discount on the voice and data if you quality for a FAN discount.

I won't be paying the $129.99 because that's for TWO iPhones on a Family Plan.

People need to chill out though.

So, anyone else confused by this? Under my account > upgrade it states:

"This line is eligible for reduced equipment pricing when you sign up for a new 2-year service agreement. All iPhone purchases require a 2-year service commitment." ... "Upgrade Today"

The screenshot on the homepage states:

"This line is eligible for equipment discount pricing when you sin up for a 2-year service agreement. You can take advantage of our no-commitment pricing option, with the exception of iPhone which requires a 2-year commitment." .... "Upgrade Today"

I have 2 iPhones. One bought the day of launch (6/29/07), and the other a week or so after.

So, seems there are two terms, "equipment discount pricing" and "Reduced equipment pricing". I wonder which is which? equipment discount = $199? reduced equipment = $199? same thing?

I am in the same exact boat here, i wonder what these actually mean

I was not asking you to point me what 1,000,000 fanboys have posted. I would just like someone to admit that the 3G phone costs more.

The TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP cost more.

The PHONE does not. Price of the phone only was cut in half.

Get it through your friggin' head already.

Not Eligible?

What exactly does this mean? I've had an iPhone since August '08.

"You can take advantage of our no-commitment pricing option, with the exception of iPhone which requires a 2-year commitment. This line may be eligible for an equipment discount on 02/12/2009"

Explain to me how this is more affordable? (Fraud)

Here's an example. I might not be able to afford to buy a new Audi at $45k so I put $10k down and take out a 48 month loan for the remaining $35k. I make my monthly payments and I own the vehicle. I could not afford it all at once but I can afford it over time.

The iPhone will be more affordable to more people in the here and now. That does not mean it is any less expensive in the long term. Make sense?

I completely agree. With my iPhone 1G - Internet connection? Check. Mapping software? Check. Faster download times for news, rumors and weather just doesn't get me thrilled. Neither does A-GPS. I will gladly sit this one out and wait for the 32 gig (at least, hopefully more) and some other hardware improvements before lining up again.

Does anybody know if I choose the Family plan 700 minutes I can get it cheaper for just 1 iPhone?

I want iPhone for me and my wife just a regular phone without data. Would that be cheaper $30?

Scuttlebutt

What about economics of scale? Once again greed overpowers the principle that increasing distribution lowers production cost and increases market penetration. AT&T and Apple hope to sell many more units but unit and maintenance cost are increasing. AT&T may be its own worst enemy within a climate of economic collapse. :(

The Cost Are Crazy

I went from $90 a month unlimited everything with sprint last week. Then I switched over to att for the iphone and now I'll be paying $150 for everything plus $199-$299 for the phone?

You can not purchase an iPhone without a data package.

Please pass whatever you're smoking, it is obviously very good!

I suggest you take a look at the Rogers plans Canadians have to pay before you call AT&T's bad.

You're just paying the same monthly fee as every other cell phone out there now. I don't understand what all the whining is about.

Can anyone help me out with this:

If my mom has me on a family plan for AT&T, and my phone isn't eligible for an upgrade. Can I open an account with AT&T myself since technically I don't have one, she just has me under hers. My name may not even be anywhere on AT&T as far as I'm concerned.

Also, my credit is barely under 700. How will this affect whether I can purchase a phone on the 11th or not?

Thanks:confused:

THESE ARE THE SAME PRICES FOR EVERY SMARTPHONE, EVEN ON VERIZON'S NETWORK! GET OVER IT! THE FIRST IPHONE GOT SPECIAL TREATMENT, THIS ONE IS BEING PRICED THE EXACT SAME AS ANY OTHER BLACKBERRY -- with or without 3G! Yes, that's right, These are the prices that every EDGE Blackberry owner has been paying...

I'll admit, this was one of those times that shouting and putting it all in caps was actually necessary. With great power comes great responsibility.

Um if you're referring to my 'questions' thanks for your response. But I wasn't complaining, just asking for a clarification. The reception thing makes sense now but there was a lot of talk before about it being cost reductions and I haven't been following every thread and post so I asked for a clarification.

Thank you.
