What's the deal with texting? If my wife and I get iPhones, what happens when I send her a text? Does that count as 1 or 2 since she read it? Or does it only count when you send, not receive?

Looks like I won't be getting the new iPhone, I sold my 8 GB phone in order to get the new iPhone. But I won't do that if they want $15 a month more for a plan with the same minutes and text messages. If the phone allowed tethering it would be the only way I would do it. I might go in and by the phone at the 199 price though and then put it on eBay. I am guessing the street value will be much higher and it will cover my early cancellation fee with AT&T.

Also, if you look at Apple's own page, they list Exchange support with the 2.0 update for earlier phones. It would be ridiculous for them to add support and then have it blocked by AT&T.

Exactly! This is what confuses me. AT&T has some information available regarding the enterprise rates for the 3G iPhone but I can't find any informatin regarding using exchange mail on the current Edge iPhone. Plus, they have been using the current iPhone for the enterprise beta testing for months so it is capable. I'm just confused...

AT&T has confusing family plans. I just added two standard phones and upgraded to a family plan for a nominal amount. I can't figure out how adding an iPhone 3G will affect it.

Check it out...

Yeah, check out that 'non-commitment' commitment price. Yeah, it's not subsidized but still locked!

And that makes sense to no one but AT&T.

Remember how they were going to be different? Remember the 'New at&t'?

Yeah, the sheep's clothing fell to the floor in a hurry.

Illegally spying, over charging, support that would be charitable to call 'third world'...

Yeah, they've changed all right...

This new iphone stinks from so many angles. I hope that it flops and AT&T is taken to the woodshed by Apple and Steve Jobs...

So they've confirmed they are selling starting at 8 AM. Will they have any left by the afternoon when I get off work? Or will all the fanboys who line up the day before in their Luke Skywalker costumes get them all?

I have a hard time believing that demand is that high.

I do not understand why everyone thinks upgrading to the iPhone will change your current plan. Those plans are for NEW customers. Just adding a 3G iPhone will increase your plan $15 if you want 200 messages and the data.

Because I have read at least 2 peoples posts that said they called AT&T and they were told that they could not simply add the iPhone 3G to their current family plan. They are required to get a new Family plan. Thats why.

Sorry that I'm asking again, but since no one picked it up earlier...arn maybe you? If it the original is so expensive, does that mean that the new model won't be cheap plastic as its rumored?

Anybody seen "white" iPhone picture?
(I'm referring to the wording on that page: If you are upgrade eligible and your account is in good standing, you will pay $199 for 8GB (black) and $299 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required.)

Wow, nothing like a good set of newbies... Um, ok, the back WILL be plastic, this is not a rumor. I repeat it WILL be plastic, this is NOT a rumor.

And just for reference, I think you guys should start at www.apple.com ;)

Because I have read at least 2 peoples posts that said they called AT&T and they were told that they could not simply add the iPhone 3G to their current family plan. They are required to get a new Family plan. Thats why.

Unfortunately I think they are both victims of misinformation. This is not how it has ever worked in the past. You will keep your current voice plan, the only thing that will get switched around is the data. The contract will be extended, thus constituting a "new" contract, but the voice plan (minutes and pricing) will stay the same. And I would be willing to bet on that...

2. Both sent an receive count I believe.

I'm not going to lie, I am just seeing this thread and it's already at page 14. I don't have time to read the whole thing, but I have one question if anyone has asked this yet i'm sorry.

I am already currently on an AT&T Family Plan and am eligible to upgrade. My phone number on the plan isn't the main line. Can I upgrade to a iPhone 3G and
1) Just pay the $30 Data Plan fee more a month?
or
2) Based on these numbers, an additional iPhone lines can be purchased for $39.99, then a $30 Data Plan on top of that meaning an additional $70 a month?

If i'm just paying $30 more for the Data i'm fine ... but if I have to pay $70 more a month I actually think that's enough more money for me not to get an iPhone.

yes, it doesn't matter if you're the main line, if you're on a family plan, it will cost 30 more a month to go from a non-iphone to an iphone 3g

It will cost 15 more/month to go from a iphone to an iphone3g assuming you keep the 200sms

What's the deal with texting? If my wife and I get iPhones, what happens when I send her a text? Does that count as 1 or 2 since she read it? Or does it only count when you send, not receive?

It would be counted as 2 messages. If you plan on texting each other a lot relative to other people there is a unpublished unlimited m2m (AT&T to AT&T) text plan for $5/month. It would need to be added per line though.

Well there was a TON more hype with the original iPhone and it did not sell out on launch day. Apple was well prepared with inventory.

However the ATT stores were woefully under-stocked. Some stores, like the one I visited only rec'd a dozen phone even as the Apple store in the same mall had hundreds and did not sell out.

My complete guess is that there will be plenty of stock unless you live in a small town. If your only option is a single ATT store then you very well might be SOL. Then again, if you live in a small town, odd are you don't get 3G service so demand could be light.

Oh yup, I talked to att rep about 1st gen of iPhone launch day, they still got plenty of them after day.

You are correct to a point....what Jobs said is essentially fraud. The Iphone is not more affordable.

You really shouldn't toss out loaded words like "fraud." It makes you sound unintelligent. Being "affordable" doesn't alway mean "less expensive." It can also mean "easier to budget," which is the case here. What Apple and ATT have done is rearrange the deck chairs, true. However, they've done so in a way that more people can sit in the shade.

does a corporate discount apply this time?

Does anyone know if AT&T and Apple will allow corporate discount on their monthly bill with the new iPhone? This wasn't the case for the original iPhone and am just curious if they have changed this.

Sure it is. Plenty of people were never going to save up the $400 to buy an iPhone. ATT is basically taking that hurdle out of the way. They are just giving them credit upfront that the company will then be payed back over the course of 24 months.

I'm not saying it's a good deal at all. But it is nothing like fraud. And what he is saying is absolutely correct. You are not!

The total ownership is not less....I see your point.

They should just give the phones away for free. Why even bother collecting $199? At $150 a month for the unlimited plan, after two years you'll have paid $3,600.00

Actually I think they will give away the phone but only after they've sold one for $199 to everyone willing to pay that price. Once those peope all have phones then they give them out "free with $3.6K contract"

We all know this is going to work. The same people who could never afford a $400 phone are happy to pay $100+ per month for a phone. Kind of easy to see why they can't afford a $400 phone isn't it.

That's voice only though...

It would be counted as 2 messages. If you plan on texting each other a lot relative to other people there is a unpublished unlimited m2m (AT&T to AT&T) text plan for $5/month. It would need to be added per line though.

I think that's for voice only calls, not texting...

I have the same plan and if true, forget the 3G...

I just got this from AT&T by email clipped.

The new 3G device will be activated in store in both AT&T and Apple
store locations. You must accept AT&T and Apple's Terms and Conditions,
as well as select a 3G iPhone Data plan before leaving the store. You
can add the $30.00 per month 3G iPhone Unlimited Data (Email-Web) plan
that includes Visual Voicemail to your qualifying voice plan. The
3G
iPhone $45.00 per month Unlimited Data with personal and Corprorate
e-mail, Web, and Visual Voicemail can be added to your qualifying voice
plan if you intend on using the 3G iPhone for access to corporate
e-mail, business applications, or access to corporate intranet.

After going back to page 1, now i see this update. I think I feel better!!

Update 11:15A.M. from Corporate Representative:

If your a existing customer with a existing plan you will either replace or add on a iphone data plan for $30/month. However you will be required to have a CURRENT AT&T plan to be eligible for the $30/data add on rate.

Cell plans with data aren't cheap..go comparison shopping, just as you would an Apple vs. an equivalent PC...

I always expected the data plan to increase when going from edge to 3G. I don't love the prospect of paying more money, but I want an iPhone 3G 16GB Black right now, so I'm switching from Verizon and dealing with the price increase.

I don't love the text plans, but I'm still confused what people expected on plan pricing?

AT&T's Website said:
What is the Enterprise Data plan?
Customers interested in using iPhone to access corporate email, business applications or corporate intranet will activate with an Enterprise Data Plan for iPhone. Learn more at att.com/iphoneforbusiness.

So.. does that mean if I run my own Exchange server at my house, that I'll need the enterprise data plan? -- Or is the same thing as their home and business phone lines.. which is no difference, you just pay more.

I'm lost as to why you guys are complaining, these plans are AWESOME!

the iPhone 3G is just so wonderful, people had to find something to complain about. :D

there is nothing wrong with these plans. they are the same as if you got a blackberry or palm or whatever PDA phone of your choice from ATT. and not all of those have 3G, GPS visual voicemail, blah, blah, blah. i am going to go get my 3G iPhone bright and early July 11th and i am going to love it dearly.

if you dont like it, go get an Instinct and a new Sprint contract.

IIRC ActiveSync only uses http / https over standard ports so I don't see how they could block it even if they wanted to

1 iPhone 3G. the math is correct, so I don't know which part to clarify for you.

Family plan 700 minutes clearly shows that it includes 2 lines, 1 being the iPhone 3G for $129.99 per month (i need/have 3 lines), so add $10, plus another $20 because I will have one previous version iPhone, add unlimited text messages for the family (which is the same price as 1500 for 2 lines) for $30 per month. They will no longer allow me to do the unlimited mobile to mobile text for $5 per line and the iPhone plan no longer includes the 200 texts. that all adds up to $190.

See that is where the disconnect is. The 3G family plan includes 2 3G iPhones lines already.

so your math is off by at least 10 dollars (i am leaning towards 30).

129.99 includes 2 3G iPhones
reduce one line to the 2G iPhone rate -10.00
sub total 119.99

add regular cell phone for 9.99
sub total 129.99

add unlimited family text for 30.00

159.99 is the total minus tax.
