Starting to agree. Might stay with Verizon and get the HTC Diamond when it comes out. This was supposed to be a "cheaper" iphone and its turning out to be more expensive. I LOVE apple products and was pretty excited about the prospect of getting one of these beauties, but its just as much money as the first with few new features.

I agree with you there....I think this will be a wait and see. Maybe the Bold or Thunder.

I actually regret having switched to AT&T. I thought I would save money, but it actually costs me more.

I'm definitely not upgrading to 3g iPhone. AT&T can suck it.

So is this confirming a near $400 subsidy? Basically is Apple going to be selling the phone for $599/$699?

I look at it as a $200 subsidy and a surcharge of $200 for folks who want no commitment in order to discourage resale. It helps protect overseas sellers of the iPhone as well.

I wish they would come out with a FAN discount Family Plan for the iPhones but it looks as if they still aren't.

The FAN should apply. But I read on HoFo that it depends on the FAN as to whether it counts for the whole family plan or just the first line.

Am I figuring this right? I have the initial plan, $59.99. I want to add a new iphone for my son. To make it a family plan, I convert the contract to family and we both share the new joint plan. To do that, plus get us text messaging it is $129.99 plus $30 for txt. I currently have txt, so if I just get a complete new individual plan, I can add 200 messages to the $69.99 for $5.00.

total for family plan ($159.99 and 700 minutes shared)
total for 2 individual plans($134.99 and 900 minutes 450 x 2)

OK, I know this is a little off subject but if I get the cheapest plan ($69.99) and add $5 for 200 texts, my total would be $75. My parents still pay for my cell phone bill and I was wondering how much I could expect tax to be, $10 maybe? My old Verizon bill was $65 total so it looks like I may have to pay $20 myself every month......

Just to make sure I have this right:

If I want to convert my existing plan to a FamilyTalk plan with 2 iPhones, it will be $130. Then Unlimited texts are $30 on top of that, so $160+ fees total?

that's what I am seeing. I will just pay for 2 plans. Less expensive and more minutes

so the only option is that you have to add a $30 txt plan to a family plan, even if you only have 2 lines?

The existing 59.99 plan is no longer eligible for the iphone. If you have a existing 59.99 plan you will be forced into the new 69.99 plan.

If you have the existing $20 data rate you will be forced into the new $30 data rate.

So two individual plans would run you 69.99 + $5 x 2 or $149.98. If you think your son will use more then 450 minutes then I would advise the family talk.

No you can have different text plans for each line. The only time it is cheaper is if both lines (assuming you would have 2) have either 1500+200 or 200+200. if you do 1500+1500 you may as well get unlimited for whole family @ $30.

yes i did that.
however, when i clicked that site att gave me the message i already included.

so my question remains,,,,

does equipment upgrade mean phone upgrade?

thanks

Yes that means you are eligible for the 199/299 price.

You can add on the cheaper text message packages on individual lines if you choose. They will only apply to one line and can not be shared.

I was hoping for a FAN discount this round. Not so.
The price chart is exactly as before with the additional $10/phone and deletion of included 200 text messages.
So.... $15.00/mo/iPhone more for 3G. Even if you live in and EDGE only area.
You can't really blame AT&T. They have to make back the high Subsidy charges that Apple is charging.
It's like buying your iPhone with a down payment and the rest on credit.
More Affordable (in the short term).

AFAIK, no commitment doesn't mean unlocked. It just means you don't need a 2 year agreement. Of course I think you would have to have a two year agreement to add the "new" data plan so it could be a moot point.

I've been rooting around the pricing plans ... AT&T has done something very sneaky ... there is no new data plan, data is now rolled into the overall pricing ... and man, the price of the Family Plan has gone up astronomically, plus it's another $15 for the texting plan I'm currently using and mo money for the second iPhone if I choose to give my current one to my wife.

Haven't crunched the numbers yet, but just eyeballing it, I would say that my cellphone bill will go up about $40 a month with this new contract.

How can they force me into a contract if I have a contract that says it is good for 2 years?

I don't see anything about adding the data plan to an existing account. I hope we can still do that.

It's buried but on the site. Just like they don't advertise unlimited m2m texting for $5 but you can call and have it added.

How can they force me into a contract if I have a contract that says it is good for 2 years?

By agreeing to the terms of purchasing the iphone for reduced pricing you change your contract.

You could potentially wait for the 599/699 no commitment pricing but using your current iphone plan with the new iphone would technically violate the terms of the contract.

Look at howardforums where people try and use cheaper data rates and tether or use the medianet packages (Only meant for medianet and not 3G/internet useage) with 3G cpable phones.

Eventually they get caught and either have to pay for their usage or agree to the more expensive 3G data/tethering plans.

I can grantee whats acceptable usage is in the the contract you signed with the old iphone.

Where do you see that FAN discounts are not eligible?

I used "new" in quotes because all the data is just the smartphone data. If you are already an AT&T member you would just add data (if you didn't have it already) and if you do just what ever the difference between the mediamax plan and the smartphone plan is. Oh and yeah you have to add sms (cause it isn't included).

By agreeing to the terms of purchasing the iphone you change your contract.

But if I just buy the phone and plan for that phone seperately from the one I currently have, then the origional terms stay the same, right? So $134.98 total for 2 individual contracts.

If not, then I will have it put in someone else's name and just pay his bill.

Apparently, I am an idiot because I can't figure out how this works.

I have a family plan with two lines. I pay $59.99 + $9.99 for the voice, $20 for my data, $15 for second data, $5 for second text messaging for a total of $109.98. My line is the iPhone, the second line is a regular phone.

Am I going to have to change voice plans? Will this impact the second phone's data plan?

I thought that I would simply pay an additional $15 a month for the increased data plan & added text ($10 + $5).
