Is anybody else extremely disappointed with the non-upgrade eligible pricing plans? I specifically joined AT&T in March so that I would be able to get the iPhone. I did not expect to have to pay $200 more than "new" customers.. I would have been just as happy staying on a cheaper plan @ T-Mobile for 4 more months and saving myself $200 come July 11th.

Also, I bought a $30 refurb Curve for a reason--so that I could toss it w/o losing sleep come iPhone 3G release--NOT to be told I'm not eligible for the $299 upgrade pricing until SEPTEMBER of 2009!!

Absolutely ridiculous. Trust that I will be calling up AT&T tonight and throwing some punches. Anybody else in the same boat?

What's up with the text plans? I use about 250 or so per month. I thought they had a 1000 texts for $9.99/month? Now they make you go with 1500 for $15/month instead?

More reasons to stick with T-Mobile - 400 messages is $5/month...

Am I figuring this right? I have the initial plan, $59.99. I want to add a new iphone for my son. To make it a family plan, I convert the contract to family and we both share the new joint plan. To do that, plus get us text messaging it is $129.99 plus $30 for txt. I currently have txt, so if I just get a complete new individual plan, I can add 200 messages to the $69.99 for $5.00.

total for family plan ($159.99 and 700 minutes shared)
total for 2 individual plans($134.99 and 900 minutes 450 x 2)

No, I don't think so.

If you're keeping your old iPhone, I think you keep your old data plan. So, to add your son: $9.99 new phone, $30.00 new data plan, $5 200 texts. = $104.99 for two phones sharing 700 minutes and 200 texts each (yours included in your data plan)

Apparently, I am an idiot because I can't figure out how this works.

I have a family plan with two lines. I pay $59.99 + $9.99 for the voice, $20 for my data, $15 for second data, $5 for second text messaging for a total of $109.98. My line is the iPhone, the second line is a regular phone.

Am I going to have to change voice plans? Will this impact the second phone's data plan?

I thought that I would simply pay an additional $15 a month for the increased data plan & added text ($10 + $5).
From what I can tell you are correct you would just pay 15 more than you pay now (data+txt). since you only have one iPhone. The family plans on AT&T's site assume you are getting two iPhones 3G's.

So you can add the 200/200 for $10 a month to both lines even if you're on a family plan?

Yes.

AT&T also confirmed that they will be subsidizing the price for new and current iPhone customers, however they will also be offering an early upgrade plan for current AT&T customers that aren't upgrade eligible for $399 (8GB black) and $499 (16GB black/white). A no-commitment plan is also in the works that would sell the phone without subsidization at $599 for 8GB and $699 for 16GB.

You have to pay for the data to get the iphone. So if you had a blackberry sans data plan (Were only paying 9.99) then you would be paying 39.99 (9.99 add a line + $30 data plan) if you wanted to replace that line (pending upgrade eligibility). Other non-iphone lines would continue to be 9.99 (plus whatever data you were paying per line before).

You can't get a 3G iphone without a data plan.
That is the biggest difference between the iPhone and the other AT&T PDA phones - the data plan is optional for all but the iPhone. It will be interesting to see if 3G users can cancel the data plan later on ...

Where do you see that FAN discounts are not eligible?

I used "new" in quotes because all the data is just the smartphone data. If you are already an AT&T member you would just add data (if you didn't have it already) and if you do just what ever the difference between the mediamax plan and the smartphone plan is. Oh and yeah you have to add sms (cause it isn't included).

But you HAVE to get a new plan, you can't keep your existing plan.

And I've crunched the numbers ... astronomical price increase. My current plan is a 550 minute family plan. We pay $100 a month plus taxes ($70 plus $30 for data) ... with taxes it comes to $134.03 a month.

New plan ... no 550 minute plan anymore, I have to buy 700 minutes and it now costs $129.99. But here's the really crappy part ... with a Family Plan you either have to pay .20 per text OR buy the $30 a month all you can use plan. None of the others are possible. So now the cost is $160 before taxes.

When you figure in the tax, I'll end up paying more than $70 a month extra for the new AT&T contract if I choose to buy the new iPhone. And if I choose to give my current iPhone to my wife, the monthly increase will top $110 a month.

I am confused. I pay currently $80 for 1400 family plan with additional 9.99 for second line. We both have old iphones and pay $20 each. Is the only thing new the $10 increase for new iPhone? Or did the plan price go up also?

Thanks. I'm having heart palpitations over here ;-). I thought I was suddenly not going to be able to afford the new phone.

Nice, AT&T

"however they will also be offering an early upgrade plan for current AT&T customers that aren't upgrade eligible for $399 (8GB black) and $499 (16GB black/white)."

Yeah, how freakin generous...nice way to 'reward' your current customers. I may just drop AT&T and get the previous edition iPhone.

Retail stores will be opening at 8am on 7/11

AT&T Press Release said:
DALLAS, July 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) today announced iPhone 3G pricing for new and existing AT&T customers, several attractive voice and data plans, and tips on how to be "iReady" when iPhone 3G goes on sale at AT&T retail stores at 8 a.m. local time on Friday, July 11.

But if I just buy the phone and plan for that phone seperately from the one I currently have, then the origional terms stay the same, right? So $134.98 total for 2 individual contracts.

If not, then I will have it put in someone else's name and just pay his bill.

Oh I misread your post. If you plan on keeping your current iphone and want only 1 new iphone then yes you would continue to pay the old price for yours and 69.99 for the new plan + the text plan.

An alternative would be to go with the 89.99 family talk plan and add on the $20 iphone plan and $35 iphone 3G/text plan for a total of $144.99 for 1400 shared minutes.

we've gone over this again and again. This is fair for people who are already under contract.

These are so much better when compared to the prices up north.

They're also going to sell the iPhone unsubsidized! :)

You are correct. If you just want to upgrade from the old iphone data plan and lose text messages you will only be paying $10 more per line. If you want to keep the 200 text messages you will be paying $15 more per line.

Now my question is; what is I am a current iphone user and receiving the special pricing and whatnot, but just adding the new iphone to my existing 2nd line on my family plan. My rate plan will stay the same correct?

Wow... so I guess this thing about being a "current iPhone owner" wasn't true afterall. If you bought the new iPhone, most likely you'll only be eligible for the $399/$499 pricing.

Oh well, just gotta do one extra shift and its paid for=)

So is it $30 for unlimited txt messages per person on the family plan?

No, $30 for unlimited messaging for everyone on the family plan. This is the same as what I had with my blackberries on my att family plan.

More and more I am so happy that we have the 1rst generation iPhone. I just don't see the additional value relative to the price people are going to pay

AWESOME! I love the prices!

$85 a month - 20% corp discount = great deal

unfortunately, i'll have to pay $399 for the phone.

i'm happy with the cost; not happy with the phone "upgrade" specs though.
