UPS looks to be Next Day shipping
found this online, so don't kill me if it's not true:
The 9th and 10th digits of the "1Z" UPS tracking number reveal the service type.
"01" = UPS United States Next Day Air ("Red")

I've got a '1Z' tracking number, presently not in UPS' database.
Service type = '01', so by 9am or maybe 10:30am Friday?
order date = 10/7 4:20am AT&T std consumer account upgrade.

I also ordered in store 5:11 pm EST, white 32gb. still backordered: "1" pending shipment. they told me the same "14-21 days, but you should still get it the 14th" story
Ive pretty much come to terms that i wont receive it friday, but DAMN i didn't know i would be waiting the whole 21 + longer!

The FedEx rep I talked to said the package is in Fort Worth right now, and although they don't have all of the shipping details, it shouldn't be a direct signature. So if you write a note and post it on your door they will leave it, make sure to sign it. Of course, this is all as long as it's not a direct signature, but we'll know that if these tracking numbers ever update.

Have people who ordered over the phone receive their tracking numbers yet?

- Confirmation email: 4:30pm 10/7
- ATT Order Update status becomes available AM of 10/8 but doesn't show backorder
- ATT Order Update status @ 7:30am 10/12: shipped supposedly 10/9 + Fedex tracking
- As of 6:41pm 10/12: Fedex tracking not updated, no other ATT emails or texts, reference tracking not updated
- Confirmation email: 4:30pm 10/7
- ATT Order Update status becomes available AM of 10/8 but doesn't show backorder

I'm sure you will prob get your phone soon. I think I may have to wait for mine until all of the 4S's are shipped to everyone in this thread because of the high demand and the money they will make.

ugh you guys sound like you have it worse but i currently own an iPhone 3g and i don't know if i can wait a whole nother day for the 4S.... my shipping info says in transit and its in louisville, KY...it started out in china on sunday so i was figuring i would get it early but i guess that ups figured out that they started to ship it too early so they are holding it in kentucky probably till tomorrow....

iPhone 3G 16GB black was bought 2 weeks before the 3GS came out, so i payed the full 400 then the price dropped. fml
Now, I finally try and get my new phone after waiting so long and I don't have a tracking number, the money for my phone is back in my bank account, my order is still back ordered, I can't update my Mac to the latest of iTunes because it's way too old, and now I'm hearing that I'm a part of the "second wave of orders" which won't get here for 4-5 weeks?! At least yours is on the way.. I might have to go weeks with my iPhone 3G when I payed my 300 for my white 4S 32GB the day pre orders opened.
Pissed off does not even begin to sum up how I feel right now.
If these guys are right then it means they are literally making the phones now and getting them on a boat, not via air which is pretty BS. Unless there is a run on components this is BS from ATT clueless reps. Then again they also told me one of my phones will be delayed 21-28 days even though it was ordered in the morning. When I said then I want to cancel the rep backtracked and said that is worse case and it will ship as soon as it arrives.

Thanks man~ I order mine late afternoon at at&t store 10/7 Friday. I see other people have updates even ordering at evening and even the next day.... so i MIGHT still have a chance.
As for you and everyone else that didn't get it, you guys will be fine too~ I'm sure they have more than enough stock. (That 21-28 days and 4-5 weeks BS, i don't believe them, simply because many people were informed that they will get their phone 14-21 days and they just got shipping updates and will receive their phone on launch day) XXXX at&t and XXXXX them again !!!
ordered mine (64gb White) from AT&T's website at about 2am PST last Friday after giving up on Apple's site.
order as of today shows the phone has been shipped and provides a tracking number that does not work. my guess is that its in the system but held out for delivery Friday. If it was physically shipping today, it would at least show that information had been sent and received by UPS, even before it left AT&T's possession.
was hoping for an early delivery like last year... oh well.

wow that sucks i got the 3G like a month after it came out way back when...but to top crappy iPhone dilemma, 2 weeks after the iPhone 4 came out my contract was up so i got it....4 months later it got stolen while i was at the mall. so i had to use my iPhone 3G again. i had to pay $450 to preorder this phone and I've been pretty pissed ever since my iPhone 4 was stolen

Yes, I ordered at around 830AM on launch day (PST) over the phone and got the tracking # emails about an hour or two ago
Shipping via UPS Next Day Air (Saver) according to the code 13
If the money hasn't been taken out of my account by Friday, meaning that they haven't shipped my phone by Friday, I'm gonna go out on a mission to try and find one. Mission:Impossible, I know. But worth a try, thanks to AT&T YAYYYYYY
