AT&T iPhone 4S Pre-Order Status Thread

reserving on Apple.com

For those of you having trouble reserving a phone on Apple.com:

I found that sometimes Safari works faster and sometimes Firefox works faster. Earlier in the week I had trouble and it took over 15 minutes to successfully reserve a phone (I ultimately could not pick it up the next day because I was stuck at work much longer than expected).

Tonight, I opened both Safari and Firefox. I opened two tabs in each browser (total 4 tabs). I kept attempting on each tab until I succeeded (i.e., while one tab was waiting for a response from reserve.apple.com I was entering the information in another tab for a another location).

I succeeded in reserving two phones at two nearby locations (16 GB white for my wife and 32 GB black for myself) in less than THREE minutes.

Just a suggestion...

The one that says WM is AT&T. The other is Verizon. First two are AT&T cellular and wifi respectively. Last two are Verizon cellular and wifi, respectively.

So compare the first against the third, and the second against the fourth.

Decided to call AT&T. A new one and perhaps a new low from these guys...I was advised to contact the CEO of apple if I have issues with the shipping of my phone. WHAT?!?

Still on hold......

Not sure if that is a fair test...

I tested inside the apple store but they have cell repeaters in there so I won't count those results. At my office, using the speedtest.net app, Verizon was getting d/l of 1.1 Mbps and AT&T was getting .45.

Upload was .96 Verizon and .2 AT&T. I'll run tests again from home and post the results.

The biggest difference for me wasn't Verizon was over double the speed, it was the subjective test using tango.

Tango app on the Verizon phone was more steady with voice and video than what the at&t phone could handle with voice alone. Stunning difference. Also, with AT&T I first got two warnings that the connection quality was too low.

Today in particular I had no issues with surf and talk. I'm keeping both phones for a while before deciding but I seriously doubt I'll ever be back on AT&T.

I believe in selling your existing phone as soon as eligibility is granted for a subsidized upgrade and getting a new one. It is my hunch that AT&T will be a problem in getting the i5 and i6 and so on. I'm guessing Verizon will always be easier than AT&T. It costs the same. And has a better radio signal.

Testing at your office is not necessarily a fair test. Inside office buildings there is usually one carrier that has a significantly better signal than the other two.

I found a similar speed test on another online site and they found AT&T to be much faster than Verizon in two different locations in San Francisco.

The majority of internet reviews reveal that in *most* locations, AT&T is faster than Verizon, though in some locations it's the opposite.

my 10/9 order shipped today. It had came off back order on Tuesday. And funny enough I pay my bill today that wasn't due till 11/7 and it ships. Seems kinda shisty.

A week and a half ago I bought a Verizon 16GB 4S. With penalties and full cost on the phone it was >$752. I used it 24 hours and took it back. VZR does not allow an early upgrade without a heavy penalty plus full price on the phone.

Last weekend (a week ago) I went to the ATT store and ordered new phone. $200 penalty for leaving VZR and $199 phone. Cost for the same service as VRZ each month is ~$35 less on ATT.

At home the wife's ATT 3G is faster than my VZR droid in all aspects. At work all of the new 4S phones are as fast or faster than VZR phones. Not seeing a relevant performance hit here.

When I add it all up, I am glad to be going back to ATT/iphone and putting an end to my year and a half long experiment with VRZ/droid.

Isn't it something that we can have such different experiences with similar products?

Those posted tests were from my house, not office. The Verizon phone was faster at both locations but I didn't take screenshots at the office. My reason to switch wasn't because of better peak speed. I switched because on my commute to work I have four dead spots on AT&T. The Verizon phone has no dead spots. If I do a speed comparison from a dead spot the numbers on speedtest would probably be shocking.

Question regarding delivery times if ordered now?

If one orders an iPhone 4S/64GB now from AT&T, will one get it before 2012?

A friend at work who's big into business said he read that apple expected 4 million phones to be sold in October and instead, the 4 million phones were sold in just 5 days.

lol, probably not. There are some people who ordered on the 7th with my zip code that hasn't even shipped yet. Ridiculous.

whoa. I thought the 10/07ers were basically cleared by now. And ATT continues to stick with the first come, first served line.

Seeing progress now. Some of the 10/7-10/9 orders are off backorder. Its taking around 20 days for orders to get off BO.

Seeing the same thing here.

Just checked my order spreadsheet...it looks like the 10/07 have all been filled (except for one 16gb white) and all of the 10/08s. The 10/09ers are now coming off BO. Good news for me, it looks like I may be next up.

[10/09 in store, black 32gb]

So you talk on your phone while driving?:p Must be a heck of a long drive for 4 dead spots from AT&T.And once again, you talk while driving?Do you text too?:(
I know this is OT but I have seen the consequences firsthand.

I say yes but why order form them when there are so many other options?

Similar to others who have posted, still in-contract (and I would not get the lower rate for another 3 weeks, however over the phone I was able to get that rate now). If I had not done that it would of been $649+tax = ~$700. If I wasn't in the contract mess, I would of purchased from Apple on day 1.

I live in Northern Ky ( 15 min south of Cincinnati) I get 5-7 Mbps down and 1.20 up here. At&t is superfast here. Verizon gets around 1 mbps down...At&t smokes Verizon in this part of the country. :D

IMO if you are getting an iphone 4s..At&T is the fastest ( HSPA+) and can talk and surf the net at same time...these iphone 4s' are built for 3g HSPA+ speed and Verizon can't give that to you. 4g is another story. :D

I feel your pain. When my next upgrade is due,I will go through Apple without hesitation.

Only one of the orders I've been tracking went off back-order today. They ordered on 10/10. They're #53 and I'm #57. Logic would dictate that these things would be handled in batches, but as we've seen already, this process has not proved to be a logical one.

A mustang on pavement is faster than a Ferrari on ice. AT&T is definitely supposed to be faster than Verizon. But if you're In a dead spot that theoretical faster speed will not exist. For those in areas where AT&T has good radio coverage, you're golden. Around here, three of us in my neighborhood and workplace have switched carriers because it's almost impossible to have a ten mile drive without an AT&T dead spot. If the next iPhone has LTE, then I'd rather be with Verizon now than to get trapped in AT&T for 24 months.

I understand, but overall At&T HSPA+ is made for the iphone 4s and is much faster than Verizon's 3 g speeds. (Sprint too) If the next couple of iphones are LTE compatible (depending where At&T is with their LTE network) I may switch to Verizon too, but right now Im getting like 4g speeds ( HSPA+) with At&t in an area that has good radio coverage. Verizon is the most expensive of the big three. :D
