Yeah, actually I did just that. My original phone was on Verizon. We went to AT&T to get me a new phone, and to transfer the number. They said I had to go to Verizon, and cancel the line/number first, THEN go and set up the number under AT&T

That's sounds so weird. I thought porting a number could always be done without a gap of connectivity.

By having to cancel first, it could be an hour or two where you have no working cell phone.

I place my order exactly ten days ago (10-20). I just received my shipping notifications email from AT&T. My 16GB black is now shipped and It should be here on Monday by 3:00 pm. I honestly didn't expect to get my phone until Thanksgiving at the earliest...

Wow, you are one of the lucky few. Orders from 10/10 are still on BO here. 10-7/10-9 seem to have tracking orders now.

Reading the other threads it appears Verizon orders are being shipped very quickly compared to AT&T, must be due to less demand for iPhone 4S's on Verizon's network?

You have to cancel the number on the other service before it can be ported to the new service. I know because I had to do so when I got my current dumbphone (now upgrading to 4S)

My husband and I didn't have to do this. We had Verizon and decided to switch to AT&T. When we went to the AT&T store he switched our numbers over from Verizon which canceled our service with them. Maybe it just depends on who you talk to.

This gives me a little hope. I wanted to wait until the end of October to order mine, thinking they would be off back-order by then. (Lol at my stupidity.) I had a 3GS and it was time to upgrade. A few weeks ago I dropped it and cracked the screen. My husband and I tried to replace it a couple of days ago and well, let's just say it is now in the trash can. So I ordered the 4S on 10/28. Expected delivery between 21-28 days. So I will have no phone until it arrives. It's all quite depressing. =/

Get you a cheap AT&T Go Phone from Wal-Mart. It cost around $10 and put your Sim Card in it and use it until you get your 4S.

Trust me...I was very surprised when I check my email this morning. FWIW, I place my order on the AT&T site.

It's really hard to find an AT&T 4S around here. For the past couple weeks, I've been sniping the Apple site around 8:55/9ish. I was hoping I can reserve a phone. I would have no luck, but plenty of Verizon/Spirit iPhone to go around.

I had the 3G. I could only check my email, make phone calls, set my alarm, and if I'm lucky..I wouldn't really lag when I text or surf the web. It was really terrible. I was ready to upgrade my phone regardless.

Not sure how AT&T is prioritizing preorders.

Still waiting in back order hell...uncomplicated in store preorder 10/09 32gb black.

So sick of waiting! I'm becoming a joke to all my friends who already have their 4s. Not really relavent to this thread but needed to vent. Can't wait for this to be over. Anyways stuck in backorder hell (ordered on the 7th but was pushed back to the 17th because of att's mistake as I've said in other posts).

How much longer is the ATT order status page going to be down for maintenance? Its making my wait even more annoying

I preordered mine from the AT&T website at 1:55am on October 7th because they claimed on the site and in my order confirmation that my phone would absolutely be delivered on October 14th.

I just got a tracking number Thursday, and FedEx says they should deliver it by Monday 10/31, same day as you're getting your 10/20 order.

I feel kind of silly staying up late to pre-order now. LOL

Congrats on getting a phone so quickly.

Hooray! Both my phone and my wife's phone are at "0 backordered"! Hoping they ship Monday and arrive Tuesday! Can't wait!

Pre-ordered on 10/7, went off of back order Wednesday night, shipping number Friday Morning, Got to Sacramento Saturday around 5 P.M and now it's chilling in FedEx's processing center and I'll have it Monday when I get out of Engineering class. AT&T really pushed it with that 14-21 day thing, but they kept their word and gave me $130 credit.

After going back and forth with the IDIOTS at AT&T CS ("I'm sorry sir, there is no way we can cancel your order"), I managed to get my order cancelled by calling AT&T's office of the president. It took less than 24 hours. As soon as I got confirmation it was cancelled, I simply walked into my nearest Apple Store and bought a 64GB White iPhone outright.

I will never, ever, pre-order again, especially from AT&T.

Hallelujah!!! Off BO finally.

Although they are within timeframe quoted, the process and communication were totally subpar. Will not preorder AT&T again.

(10/09 in store)

Amen to that!

I canceled my "pre-order" and reserved two online to pickup at an Apple store. In and out of the store in less than 45 minutes, including activation, setup, etc. The Apple experience rocks. AT&T service is pathetic. Next time I'll pre-order directly from Apple.

Ok not my experience at all. I called Verizon and they have a toll free number to request the port. All the info needed is the to and from phone numbers plus the account number of the old provider. If there's a pin on the account then you need that too. If not, you need the last four digits of your social. You do NOT cancel the old provider first and I would advise anyone against it.

Reserving a phone at Apple

It's really hard to find an AT&T 4S around here. For the past couple weeks, I've been sniping the Apple site around 8:55/9ish. I was hoping I can reserve a phone. I would have no luck, but plenty of Verizon/Spirit iPhone to go around.

What I did to successfully reserve 2 phones at an Apple store within 5 minutes: open two browsers, and at least 2 tabs in each browser. Then use each tab to check a different store (or even the same store). This seemed to increase my chances and I reserved 1 white 16 gb and 1 black 32gb at two nearby stores.

The order status website was down all night. And I just checked now and it went off BO. I ordered 10/10 in store 16gb black.

At the store today I ported over the number to my new verizon 4S and cancelled the AT&T line. They told me I could not cancel the AT&T phone order in the store. So I have to cancel by phone I guess. I actually wanted the items to NOT go off BO.

I tried the reservation thing with no such luck on Thursday night. I simply walked into my local Apple Store on Friday morning and just asked if they had any in stock, they said "yes", and 20 minutes later I had a new iPhone 4S. If you're having hard luck doing the reserve-in-store thing, just try going in, you may be surprised.

I think AT&T has the overwhelming majority of existing iPhone users and since they allow upgrade eligibility before the 24 month contract, most people are locked in to their brand. Few people (like me) have switched away.

Unless people express themselves with their wallets, why should AT&T try to do better?

Agreed. When I logged onto the website, the 16 GB white was hard to find. But when I went to the store, some customer in front of me just walked in without a reservation and picked up a 16 GB white iPhone 4s.

Don't give up! And don't wait endlessly for AT&T's pre-orders if you have an Apple store nearby...

Same exact situation! Glad we're finally done with all this. I think our iPhones are gonna be delivery truck buddies. lol
