I am a current AT&T customer under contract. I have a 4S. I had a camera problem and today Apple replaced the iPhone under warranty. No problem. Stuck in the SIM and it worked. Due to a work situation, I have to leave the country for a few weeks. Since it's a rush, I had to purchase a factory unlocked iPhone 4S so I can use Movistar's data plans that are cheaper than AT&T's international rates. I had to do what I had to do. I contacted AT&T online chat and got the IMEI updated (from factory unlocked iPhone) on their end. It all works fine.

I won't be back in time for the 30 day return window, so I plan to sell the warranty replacement iPhone to recoup most of the cost of factory unlocked iPhone when I get back. On a whim, I asked the rep that since I would no longer be using the replaced one, could it be unlocked? She said she couldn't guarantee Apple would say yes since I'm under contract, but she'd put in the request anyways and gave me the case number. 5-7 business days. So we'll see.

Well things changed a little bit after this, but here's an update. It's been 5 business days and I restored the phone (on a hunch) with the AT&T sim card I had in the unlocked iPhone. I haven't gotten the email yet (two business days left), but iTunes came back and said it was unlocked.

I returned the unlocked iPhone I bought. No money lost. Now I have an unlocked iPhone.

I just read somewhere that AT&T stopped giving unlocks to non-customers after 28 april. Don't know if this is true, but if it is, I'm screwed. I requested my unlock and they waited long enough to say that I'm not eligible.

I checked IMEI info and it says my iPhone is still locked. Should i do a restore to check if its unlocked?

where di you read that?
I just called them from austria as a non at&t customer and they told me that they won't unlock it for me! -.-

Hi guys, I contacted AT&T by mail and they told me that I need an account to unlock the phone...

It is very annoying to own a very expensive iPod Touch...

It seems that they won't unlock device of non-AT&T customer anymore.

hi Mugen

having the same dilemma as I have a phone with the same status. did you connect yours to iTunes?

try putting in a non supported sim without any interposer or gevey and use SAM to deactivate ( need to be jailbroken). do not restore unless you don't like your jailbreak which I assume you have.

SAM installed via repo.bingner.com add as source in cydia.

pls post results.

btw at&t not entertaining more requests as people taking advantage of the service. All other operators charge a delatching fees such as £20 under o2.

for the record I unlocked mine under 3 hours but legit account and number. so if you have all details no need to worry and just call AT&t. if you recieved a "gift" or bought off e b a y or c r a i g s l I s t. then best to approach an unlocker server.

hope this info helps

:)

What the heck is proof of purchase? ATT rep asked me proof of purchase that he knows iPhone is purchased through ATT. How can I have that if I bought iPhone on the eBay? Only previous owner couldve had that paper.

If all else fails, buy a sim interposer. They are pretty cheap on eBay.

That is indeed true.

If its locked to AT&T then its definitely purchased thru AT&T at one point. Simply fax the ebay receipt if they insist and proceed with the unlock. The policy change and implementation of formalised modus operandi has streamlined their process which lacked uniformity in the beginning of the unlock stages. Good luck

Just got my email, no dice they didnt unlock me. Now I'm gonna have to search for someone to help me out here

Check your imei info via www.imei.info

You never know as you may be one of the lucky ones who got unlocked even though you received a refusal to unlock. Members have also received positive confirmation and not seen light and day of the "congratulations.." message on itunes. Worth a shot.

do post an update with your latest approach to a not so straightforward problem. it was simple till they had to complicate it all for everyone.

I've got this e-mail today

I got my unlock 2 weeks ago. Today I received this (see attachment)
