Got the "rejection" email yesterday but for kicks deactivated my iPhone with Redsn0w this morning to see what would happen and BINGO!

This was a Craigslist bought 3GS.

I recieved same message, but AT&T rep told me that my request is denied?!? Did you get Congratulations on iTunes? Do you have an AT&T account? What number did you gave them when you submitted your request?

I got your PM. I'll attempt to unlock it for you. Give PM me the necessary information.

i guess i'm lucky since i view in imei.info "SIM LOCK: NO", i deactivate with sam then i connect to itunes and then it show Congrats your iphone its unlocked.

Then e restore to 5.1 and still unlocked.

they change their policy because many people are leaving AT&T...thats why they are asking for wireless number insted of Imei...

So they're no longer asking for the IMEI just the phone number associated with it? That should work with people who buy it used...shouldn't it?

----------

First try i got:
We are only able to obtain unlock codes for the devices AT&T has purchased directly from the manufacturers. While your device may function on the AT&T network, the code to unlock the device is only available from the service provider who sold the device. Please contact the provider's customer service support to obtain the code for your device.

Our records indicate your equipment was not an AT&T branded device originally but did indicate registered on our network. It appears the device may have already been unlocked. Please try the SIM card for the provider you are attempting to utilize.

Second try i get:
We are unable to complete your request at this time due to the following
reason:

The unlock code for this device is unavailable due to security
restrictions based on the device's history. You may want to return the
device and/or provide feedback to the seller.

I go on imei.info to check the unlock status, and i get "error".

What gives? Any ideas?

You can check two imei's with one email address. If you try it twice and still get error make another email and check again. I get that "error" sometimes too.

Finally I got my first iPhone unlocked. It took only 4 days to unlock. Request on 5/4 and unlock on 5/8. I am not a AT&T customer but the request done the guy who sold this iPhone to me. I received the email from AT&T ,,The issue has been resolved,,
Checked on IMEI.info and is says no sim lock. Then I connected the phone on iTunes and it came up with a error. But then I activate the iPhone with my wireless connection on the phone.
Before this I tried to unlock 5 iPhones. But no luck as non customer. With phone calls and emails. Even I got the same email from AT&T with ,,The issue has been resolved,, but the iPhone was still locked.
Thank you to the guy who sold this iPhone on eBay to me. Very kind.
Now I am waiting on one more iPhone to unlock.

For those using an old iPhone on GoPhone

Yeah, I got my rejection email on May 1st (original case submitted on 04/10/12).

I might refile using my gophone acct... I'm technically a ATT customer, but since ATT doesn't "officially" support iPhones on the gophone plan, I'm hesitant to tell them that. I don't have a data plan, and don't want them to force one on me...

HAs anyone successfully tried using their goPhone number to request an unlock ?

Yes, actually. An old 3GS given to me over a year ago by someone who upgraded to the iPhone 4 the second it was released. And I can tell you, there is no point in trying to hide the fact you've been using a GoPhone account on your iPhone.... as soon as you give them the IMEI number, they can see EVERYTHING THAT HAS EVER BEEN DONE ON THEIR NETWORK WITH THAT PHONE.

I admit, I tried to not let them know at first. First call was to a CS agent who was obviously clueless. So I called again and found someone with a brain (and a Boerboel, but i digress). Since I knew the original phone number associated with this 3GS, I gave her that along with the IMEI number. A long pause ensued...........

Finally she asks, "do you have another number you've been using with this phone?". At which point I realize I have to come clean and admit that yes, I'm using an iPhone on GoPhone. (frankly, if you keep cellular data turned off and leave 3G off, they don't care as long as you give them $$$).

Anyhoo... long story short, she submits the claim, gives me a case number, and I wait for my email.

I receive my email, with the instructions.

Now here is where things change... because I'm running a jailbroken 3GS on firmware 4.2.1 and BB 05.15.4. Ain't no way I'm gonna upgrade to 5.1, at least not yet. So I know well enough to NOT HIT THE BIG RESTORE BUTTON IN iTUNES. (see pic)

But even using the right-click backup and restore DOESN'T WORK. Then it hits me.... as far as iTunes is concerned, as long as I have my GoPhone SIM in the phone, there is no reason for it to "unlock" the phone. Therefore nothing happens.

Pulled the SIM and tried a right-click backup and restore with no SIM. Same result, nothing happens.

Fortunately, I also have a pay-as-you-go phone with T-mobile. (LIGHTBULB) I put the T-mobile SIM in the phone. Naturally, I get no signal on the phone. Connected it to iTunes and SURPRISE!! I get the "iTunes needs to check for an update to the carrier settings for your iPhone." (no one has yet posted this, TYVM)

Clicked on the "Check" button, waited a few moments, and got the "CONGRATULATIONS" screen. No backup. No restore. It just works.

However, I must point out that immediately after the unlock I discovered nearly all of my apps (except the defaults) would crash upon launch. Ran another right-click restore, and all is well.

My 3GS is still on firmware 4.2.1, BB 05.15.04, is STILL JAILBROKEN and now, happily, FACTORY UNLOCKED. T-mobile, here I come!!!

Report:

Just got my iPhone 4 unlocked.

Extra information:
I bought it in the Apple store in New York on a trip and i live in Europe. I did not activate the phone in the store, and I have never been an AT&T customer. The iPhone is jailbroken and I had it unlocked with Gevey sim.

The first time I contacted AT&T was by calling them (+1 800 288-2020 I think the number was) on april 14. The call took about 13 minutes. I gave them my IMEI, e-mailadres and told them I bought the phone of contract in the apple store.

I waited until may 1 and finally got an email that said I was not eligible because I had no valid wireless account or something.

I contacted AT&T again on may 3, this time by emailing them with another email-address (sent to: icare3@amcustomercare.att-mail.com). (I recommend foreign users who cannot use the chat service to mail them to the mentioned address.)

My email to AT&T contained:

"Hello,

I want to unlock my iPhone 4 bought full price (no contract).

IMEI: ...
Serial No.: ...

Kind regards,

My name"

I got a reply after about two hours. Most important content:

"You will need to fax the receipt
with the following information displayed prominently on the cover page
and/or the receipt:

The term iPhone Device Unlock Request
Your name
Mobile number of the device being unlocked if applicable

Contact preference e-mail or phone number required
Your case number

The fax must be received within 48 hours in order to process the
request."

I don't have a fax so I scanned my receipt and faxed it using this site:
http://www.freepopfax.com/

At may 5 I got another email from AT&T (on the emailaddress I gave them when I called them, this is not the same as the one I used when I emailed them). Other members on this forum reported they also got the same email:

"We are unable to complete your request at this time due to the following reason:
- No valid current or former mobile/account number associated with request."

I started checking my unlock-status using the site mentioned in this thread:
http://www.imei.info/

First check: locked
Second: lasted so long I checked again today
Today: no simlock

Procedure to see if my iPhone was really unlocked:

1. Turned of iPhone
2. Got out sim tray
3. Took out gevey sim and sim card (not AT&T card)
4. Put sim card back (the same card!)
5. Connected with laptop and waited for startup (iTunes starts up automatically)

I got an error that my sim card could not be activated at this moment (appeared on the phone too), clicked ok and the phone started searching for a network and connected! Turned of the phone and back on to make sure and it is unlocked! (never had an email from AT&T to say it is unlocked)

I will leave this thread now in peace, and wish all the rest godspeed.

I was just able to unlock an iphone4s. I called AT&T on 5/8/12 and I got the restore email from them within 10 minutes that same night. I just now deactivated the phone with SAM. I have a contract with AT&T so I used my original SIM and plugged it back up to iTunes and got the message "Congratulations, your iphone has been unlocked"

I guess this worked because I have an original AT&T SIM.

I did the same thing on 5/5/12 with a deactivated at&t sim card from ebay.
I received a "not a valid former number..." email.
i used SAM with the deactivated sim card, i followed the steps for the SAM unlocking activating/spoof and it worked!!! My iPhone is Officially unlocked i tried a lot of other sim cards and they all work just fine!! :)

if you call even then they tell that since you arent an ATT customer they cant unlock the device!

Bro this is simple...it's already out there...you have to be an at&t customer..thats the standard requirement now. What everyone really needs to do is sit down and analyze the requirements for the unlock and you'll see how extremely simple it is
