For those of you who are laughing at people angry about $10 extra dollars, I have my argument as well.

I'm 17. $15 for data was expensive enough. Especially for cheap (as in quality) EDGE network. Add the mandatory $5 for SMS = $20.

I would love to get the new iPhone (sell my old one for $150, spend $50 more for a new one), but I don't want to pay $30 per month now plus however much extra for 200 SMS. That's like $35 per month.

I could afford it, sure, but AT&T sucks and I'm not gonna throw more money at them so that they can rip me off. Everything else (gas, groceries, etc) is costing more and more anyway, so even though I would like the new iPhone and I could pay $35 for data per month, I say screw you AT&T.

if the $10 is that big of a deal you shouldn't be considering phones that cost between 200 and 600 dollars (including v1)

i do believe att is a rip off of a company and i do hate the fact that I have to buy a iphone through them because I love my iphone.

That said, if they would just give us unlimited sms or like 1000 sms for 30 bucks including data plan for 3g then i wouldn't be as mad.

Unfortunately, i will suck it in and pay the extra amount. I really hope that my FAN discount applies or else i will be pissed.

It's not about the money. It's about the principle and att's got none. Once the iphone contract goes to all companies. I hope att will burn.

Did you not read what I just wrote?

Spending that much that I have saved for a one time purchase is fine.
Spending more monthly gets strenuous.

It's about not supporting AT&T in guzzling down more of my money.

Edit:

Then don't. You're whining about a simple fact that you can not afford a $10 a month. Find a cheaper phone with a cheaper plan and have fun.

I would like a Aston Martin too... Should I go a whine on official AM forums all day long cause their car is over $250K and I can't spend more than let's say $200K???

Get a life and a cheaper phone... or go and cut your neighbors lawn once every two months for $20 and you will afford it.

All -
From AT&T's website, their other PDA phones can be purchased without a data plan. PDA phones can also be bought with data only (no voice).

Since the 3G is now being treated as a standard phone, there's a good chance that all you paupers out there may actually be able to forego data, live on WiFi only, and save $15 - $20 on your monthly bill. Plus get the 3G for half the price of the old phone. :apple:

You weren't on the conference call today, were you.

It was implied that the contract is for the line AND the data plan. Sort of like the international package on the iPhone.

Don't count on being able to remove that package if you have an iPhone IMEI on the account...

well i know i have done it before if someone didnt want it, but youre right they may change it as part of the agreement if the IMEI is still on there.

it will. the card itself says 3G on it

No it will not! There are settings on the AT&T side that will prevent it from using the 3G services. My girlfriend had a phone which was 3G and she was getting slow EDGE service. We called and they said they had to enable the 3G services on her account. Just buck up and pay the $10 (its like ~2 gallons of gas :) )

Just kind of a "for what it's worth" post,
I spoke with the manager of my local store here (att NOT Apple) who is also a friend , and he showed/ read me the info that he has on the new iphone, rates, ect and what it said was that yes, it was going to be $30 a month instead of the $20 that it is now, and yes they were dropping the 200 free text. It said in regard to the "old" iphone, that the rate plan would continue as is "until further notice". Also that you did NOT have to be eligible for an "upgrade" (as it was NOT being subsidized! The 199.00 was just the flat price)

I actually saw this paper work, but as I said it is just a FWIW post.
(I read everything with a grain of salt. Not everyone tells the truth about who they are, where they work, ect.. ect.. and lets face it , you all don't know me from Adam's house cat!! :)

Just wanted to pass along what I knew!
Have a great night everyone! :)

yea those were the first couple emails... there was another email someone from marketing sent that actually explained that someone would have eligable to purchase the iPhone...

guess we'll all see over the next couple weeks.

when i hear july 11th its like someone saying year 2019

I'm not sure why you guys would want to switch from AT&T to Verizon for cheaper service... Isn't Verizon's PDA data plan $30 too? Though I would definitely agree that Verizon does have better coverage than AT&T from what some friends who switched tell me, and now that they bought Alltel I'm sure it will grow even more. I don't think AT&T is all that bad. With the exception that I think it's a complete joke that you can't put any insurance on their PDA's but you can on every other company.

Why is it that we as Americans feel like this world owes us something? Funny.....yet sad.

I am perfectly happy with the service. It is all about competition, AT&T is similar to all other viable wireless providers in the US and they have the iPhone......nuff said!

Wow. Incredible reactions.

Yesterday it was $400 and $20 a month for data.

Today its $200 and $30 a month for data (and not the same data, mind you... faster data.)

And that's apparently just too much for anyone to handle. Well, more iPhone 3G for me then.

Yes...faster data....in limited areas. You should see the coverage map for at&t:

Upgrade and old iPhone

Now - here is the question I guess many will have: I am going to give my 1st gen iPhone to my wife and get myself the 3G. We have a family plan, she has a "normal" phone currently (and is paying the plan:p). Is there still the old data plan for the EDGE or do we have to upgrade her plan with the 3G and of course get me the 3G as well (70USD right there)...?

you guys are seriously gonna get all hyped up over $10 a month extra... The blackberry unlimited data plan is $35 a month. you get a $200 cheaper phone, with 3G, and over the time of the contract pay $40 more for a 3G iPhone, big deal

Actually my wife's Blackberry data plan is $30 per month. Given that I don't find it surprising that they wanted to raise the iPhone plan to $30 per month.

yea because, sorry i hate this, half of the customer service reps we have are absolutely horrible and have no experience!!!!!!

go to a local corporate store, get a new sim card, it will be free. see if they will activate your iphone there for you, if not take your laptop or jus do it at home if youre close.. a simcard can only recieve the latest downloads immediately(w/ in 30 mins or so) of being activated.

they need to give u a new one, you activate it, then give it back to them for the downloads.... should work for you perfectly after that.

If I were AT&T I would HATE to have you speaking on my behalf.

Good luck with it, though. You are making a lot of peoples point.

Thanks - D

I am just wondering if I can still get the 3G iPhone without this $30 data plan (don't get me started for "why do u want an iPhone without a data plan", what if I just wanna do it)

Because iirc AT&T once provided the option of removing $20 data plan for the 1st gen iPhone plan. But recently when I tried to locate it, it was not there.

Anyone's got any information on this? I would appreciate it~

As a couple others have mentioned, it would be nice if we still have the option of the Edge service and the $20 pricing. Hawaii doesn't have 3G at all and it will probably be 15 years before anything other than Honolulu has 3G.

So, the 3G plan buys me absolutely nothing, except MAYBE once every couple years, IF I travel to the mainland, and to a place that has 3G?

Right now a 1st gen iPhone has a LOT of value for a lot of people because it does everything a 2nd gen does, except GPS. AND, it comes with a rate plan that saves you $120-$180 a year.

Remember, us 1st gen folks get exactly the same software that the 2nd gen guys get. That, in my opinion, is pretty darn cool. 1st gen iPhones are anything but outdated, in fact they are desirable for many.

common sense (I think lol)

So any final word on copy/paste or if the screen is still scratch resistant glass?? I'm worried now.....

Dude...it's a $199 phone...they've already somewhat proudly admitted the back was plastic....so what do you think the screen is made of?? C'mon, man!!

When you hold it in your hands, unlike the 1st gen, it's gonna actually feel like a cheap plastic phone lol

Temporarily disappointed...

After all that reading (whew!) thought I might post for a change.

I did not buy the original iphone as I was under contract with Verizon, so I've been waiting and waiting for the new iPhone, like many. I was hoping for some great feature upgrades besides the 3G, as I live in an area that doesn't offer it, and probably won't for some time. A little disappointed now, since the rate plan has gone up. Point taken that faster data is worth it, but obviously that's not an option for everyone, so it's a rate plan increase for what... GPS? Would love to know what percentage of iPhone users live in 3G coverage areas.

I wish I had gone for the $250 refurb now, but hindsight is 20/20.

I'm guessing that once the phone is in my hand I'll probably quickly forget the disappointment when I can browse the internet anywhere like a mini computer. It's true that it's now commensurate with other smartphone data plans, so it's not like they're charging a premium for it. If the FAN codes work now it will take the sting completely out.

Bummer I can't get the old rate plan, but c'est la guerre. Bring on July 11th.

Hmm. I'm an ATT customer eligible for an upgrade, and I have a 39.99 plan and a $5 unlimited M2M Text plan... do you think I can just add the iphone data plan and be good to go? I'd hate to give up my text plan because it's so good. I do find it odd that there isn't any concrete plan info - that's kind of sketchy to me.
