I still can't get through on the Apple store. I have gotten past the AT&T check only to have my effort crash on what appears to Apple's turf on more than one occasion. So I'm not sure this is really AT&T's fault, although it is always great fun to blame them for everything. It will be interesting to see (if we ever do) the real source of the problem.

After many failed attempts on the Apple site, I was able to order through ATT early this morning with no issues. I did receive a confirmation email, and the order shows in my ATT online account.

Here is a snapshot of the pending order on my ATT account page. Notably, it says "backordered" - not sure if this means it's actually backordered, or it just says that until the release date.

I just looked at my status page, i made my order at 2AM pst and it does not show any quantities as being backordered.

After trying for an hour (10:30-11:30 CDT), giving up going away for a while, trying again for about 2.5-3 hours (12:30/1PM - 3ish), going away for a little while, and trying again at 5PM CST, I have a new message from AT&T online:

Looks like I'm SOL on a new phone. Thanks for nothing, AT&T.

Finally got through, only to find out you can't order two iphones at once. Even if they are for separate lines.

I placed two separate orders for two different lines and it went through smoothly. I did it through Apple's website.

I was able to order from AT&T when they came online at about 3:30AM MST. Haven't received and email but I think I'm good. I also reserved via Apple Store App for in store pickup, just in case. (Received email on that instantly).

I'm annoyed that I can't get mine shipped to my house. Does anyone know why this might be?

Is it because this line has never had an iphone before? I'm just going to have AT&T switch it over to my phone line that previously had an iPhone. ugh.

I thought it might also be because I'm not purchasing it from my apple account? But I thought I was logged in.

Maybe in a few days I'll call Apple and see if they can switch it over.

Just posted an image of my order from 3:30AM MST. Right after AT&T started doing pre-orders. Mine say In Progress, but don't show backordered.. So yeah.

$599 Upgrade Price?

So, before this day I received a text from AT&T saying I was eligible for the $199 upgrade... I go through the process today, after hours of not getting through, I finally make it to the screen that on one side says an error occurred, on the other side, you can pick it up at the store. So, I choose to pickup at the store, login into my account, then it shows me that I owe $599! WHAT GIVES?

After a disappointing adventure from 4:00am-5:30am Eastern trying via Apple.com and numerous times throughout the day (making it to various stages of the pre-order process), I finally checked my cart on Apple.com around 12:30pm Eastern and noted that there was an iPhone 4 there and so I was able to complete the checkout process. No confirmation email yet.

I got my wife her iPhone 4 via the AT&T website mid-afternoon after dozens of attempts on both AT&T and Apple and the Apple Store App - hopefully before the reported 4:30pm Eastern cutoff for release day iPhones.

My brother in law went into Best Buy at around 1:00pm Eastern in Southern Indiana and walked out 10 minutes later with a pre-order and was only number 21 at that store. He was told he will receive a call on the 23rd for his "appointment" time to pick up his phone on the 24th.

I am interested to see if all three of us receive our phones on the 24th.

Regardless, I am ready to finish work and have some drinks - a ridiculous day indeed!

How the hell does AT&T sell out of iPhone's within hours of time where 90% of the country can't even place an order?

How many did they have? 100?

I reserved mine for pickup at my local store. I called them because I wanted to be sure they were honoring reservations, and the employee stated that it is not first come first serve for reservations. I just have to show up during business hours on June 24th and one will have been set aside for me.

It could be BS, but this is the same store that handled my ipad reservation, and when I got there, they had my ipad with my name on it in the back.

Talk about mis-information today. Earlier during my frustration with pre-ordering, I called the local RadioShack and was told that during a conference call yesterday evening that no one is doing pre-orders and that they will take my name, cell phone number, and address and input into their computer system starting at 1:00pm eastern. I informed her that there are both online and in-store pre-orders occurring today (even with the server issues) and she said that was not true. Needless to say, I continued to click on the Apple and AT&T website for hours rather than give my information to RadioShack.

I got the same error this afternoon despite the fact that early this morning I was told that I was eligible for an early upgrade. I think it's just an artifact from their servers being jacked up.

I got mine fine

dont be pissed because sprint has not got a phone thats caused this much of a problem. Yes there will be lines to wait in, yes there will be system failures, and yes there will be people that complain.
You have to think about the number of people that are at att today, of course something bad is going to happen, people have just turned into babies. I don't see why everyone hates Att.
I have never had 1 problem with them and I have been a loyal customer since 2000 when they were Cingular.

Hope this is true. That would be lovely. The way the email reads it states that "your reservation will be held until the close of business on June 24th"

I think a "pre-order" is where you pay before hand, while a reservation does guarantee you a phone, but you pay when you get it. Not quite sure though.

my thoughts exactly - does not sound legit.

i wonder if this is to discourage continued server assault via their web servers for their non-iphone customers (even though the apple site still retrieves some eligibility data from their servers).

Aren't you assuming that because a lot of people couldn't get through that nobody got through?

God, I hope so - I'd hate to think that getting this close > < to having the phone in my cart screwed up my ability to upgrade.
