How the hell does AT&T sell out of iPhone's within hours of time where 90% of the country can't even place an order?

How many did they have? 100?


90%? i doubt 90% of macrumors readers were unable to place the order.
 
Have been trying off and on since 6am. Just got order to go through AT&T's site for my wife's phone. I got mine to go through on Apple's site earlier today. We'll see if they both show up on the 24th. Then I'm sure we'll spend 12 hours activating each phone too. I'll gladly pay AT&T's increased termination fee when and if the iPhone moves to a real carrier.
 
So, before this day I received a text from AT&T saying I was eligible for the $199 upgrade... I go through the process today, after hours of not getting through, I finally make it to the screen that on one side says an error occurred, on the other side, you can pick it up at the store. So, I choose to pickup at the store, login into my account, then it shows me that I owe $599! WHAT GIVES?

Same thing happened to me but mine is $699 for the 32GB... I own the 1.0 so clearly I am eligible for this upgrade. I suppose that this will all be taken care of when we go to the store. I dont plan to be spending that kind of money when I sign up for the crappy 2yr contract. I got the email response for my "reservation" but there is no ID number or anything like that.

TO ALL THAT ARE TRYING: I got through and I don't see a reason for you to keep trying to reserve this at a store. You're not going to get any type of reserve number. Its just another way of them saying.. come to the store on the 24th like everyone else and WAIT in line. EVEN though you supposedly have a reservation.
 
YAY! Went through for me finally. iPhone 4 16 GB black Pre-Ordered for delivery on June 24. :D
 
I think I'll just wait a month or so. I was hyped for a pre-order but I can just see the impending disasters happening on the 24th.
 
We'll see how this whole At&t pre-order stuff works out. I mentioned earlier that I got in my phone order at 7:30MST and my wife's in at 11:46MST. My son's I didn't get in until 2:35 so he may have to wait a day or so to get his. He will be pissed:eek:
 
For those who were successful ordering on AT&Ts website, did you all receive an email confirmation?

I have a receipt with an order number but received no email and when I try and check the status of my order on their website, nothing shows up. Wondering if my order actually went through!
 
Both Orders Went Through?????

SO, I had my order go through on ATTs web site... when i heard they ran out I tried apple again and it FINALLY went through. Both were only $199. I have a confirmation # for both. Does that mean i now get 2 phones for $199????

I get it. So AT&T is opening the "flood gates" periodically throughout the day. Several timestamps match Facebook message I see of some friends getting theirs. Interesting.

Mine keeps getting hung up on "processing your request". I'll occasionally get to the point where it verifies my plan & pricing, but won't let me get any further than that :(
 
After trying all day to pre-order poolside at Mandalay Bay in Vegas on my iPhone, I finally gave up around 1 pm. Just got back to the hotel room and successfully placed an order for a 32 GB model right away. $299, placed through the online Apple store, delivery on the 24th.
 
After trying since 6AM PDT, I finally managed to get my iPhone 4 ordered through Apple's site at around 3:30pm. Still says it will be delivered on June 24th. What a nightmare...but I think that things should start to clear up for everyone soon. Crappy part about living in California is that we have to pay sales tax on the full price...

I got a confirmation email within 1 min of ordering
 
I got through on AT&T's site about 15-20 minutes ago. I figure if it didn't say backordered at the time and let me order it saying nothing about it arriving later than the 24th, I'm all good. We will see, though.

I'm in the same boat. I ordered at 5:30 this morning, Eastern, and received an order confirmation page and an order number. I did not, however, receive a confirming email. After reading some of the posts, I called AT&T and finally got through. The CSR could find no record of the order number and my account was not in the pending status it would have been in had the order been effective. The CSR transferred me to their "ECOM" department to do some further checking, but the transfer resulted in a recorded message telling me call volumes were high and to call back later. When the Order Status function was up on AT&T's website again I checked there, and nothing came up.

I just went to store.apple.com and was able to reserve the same phones at my local Apple Store. For some reason I was not offered the opportunity to order it online.

Any advice will be appreciated.

I am part of my family's premier account, and when it asks me for the last 4 of my SS number does it want mine, or does it want the primary account holders? I do not remember ever giving them my number but maybe it was required at some point.

Hmm, yeah sounds like if our orders aren't showing in order status, we probably didn't get in!

For those that ordered via Apple, how long did it take to get a confirmation email? My separate order for the dock which I ordered this morning and iPhone confirmation order hasn't arrived yet.

Also, on the " Thank You" page saying the order went through it states, " No Voice plan changes". But, then I go to order status and it says, " No Voice Plan". Hopefully that the changes just got caught off or left out.... Hopefully, nothing got screwed up.
