Anyone else's coating on the delrin piece flaking off? Kind of disappointed...

I've had mine on a few weeks. No problems at all. And mine gets a work over too I have a 5 and 2 year that like to play games on it everyday. It's still looking perfect. That's a bummer. Have you tried CS yet ?

I have two cases and I treat my stuff pretty rough and I don't have nothing like that. That's kind of odd, I didn't even know there was anything to flake off! Call them up, I am sure they will take care of it.

x2 here - banging around in same pocket w/ keys and not a scratch after 10 days...

I'm wondering is this an Atomic. Mine has Atomic on that side below the volume control. I don't see anything like that on this one. Could you maybe post another pic showing it is in fact an Atomic please. Maybe its just not showing up in that pic Do all you guys have the Atomic on that side too?? Anyway just a thought.

I am not saying its not but they ALL have atomic on the side and that one does not even look the right color. It could be a bad picture, who knows. There is not enough picture to actually tell.

why would i try to mislead people and post if this wasn't atomic?

it seems like there is a thin coating of something over the delrin piece. i was taking off a protector on the back and the scotch (magic) tape happened to touch the delrin piece when i lifted it up, the coating came off.

I wasn't doubting you, I just said that I couldn't see enough of the picture to tell. But I have hit mine with my keys and change and even dropped it and it didn't do that so I don't know what the hell happened. But I honestly can't see scotch tape doing that. That just really don't add up unless that tape was sticky as hell and I still can't see it doing that. I could be wrong though but like I said, I have done alot more to mine and not even a scratch. But shoot Atomic a email and see what they will do for you.

I'm the same as ufcfighter. Just was not a great pic, color was odd etc. It happens. Not that we were saying your lying just wanted to be sure. Mine has taken so much abuse. Been on and off several times. I've had to scrub off sticky dried pop, finger prints, been dropped on a TILE floor from a couple feet high(ouch) etc because off my kiddies and it does not have a mark on it. I would think if peeling was a common issue I'd have it.

I would contact CS right away. Maybe just a defective one. It happens
UnFortunately:(. Luckily they are a good company and will fix it. I wouldn't worry about your next one doing it.

Have you exposed it to any harsh chemicals? Particularly any containing chlorine (like bleach)? Delrin can begin to oxidize and flake badly when exposed to chlorine. It's one of the chemicals it can't tolerate. And delrin also breaks down when exposed to UV light, but I doubt you've had it long enough to have it in the sunlight that much!

Man it has to be something because honestly I have beat the hell of out mine and nothing. Not a mark. Again I am not calling you a liar, but I just can't see tape of all things doing what keys or coins or even a drop didn't do to mine. Chris knows more about delrin than me but like he says, was it ever exposed to something that might have ate away at it? Or did you try to wipe it down with something? I'm just curious because that is odd for a piece of tape to do something like that.

These are good to know. I've just used water to wipe stuff off but use bleach a lot Around the house so I'll be sure to not touch my phone if on my hands. UV too. If you know anything else to avoid could you please post. Thanks:) it takes such a beating I would hate to put something on it that would damage it due to not knowing.

how about ammonia? I routinely wipe my phone down with Windex which has ammonia in it....

I'll list some info below about what delrin can and can't be subjected to:

High chemical resistance. Use with alcohols, aliphatics, aromatics, aldehydes, ketones, ethers, esters, oils, greases, gasoline, diesel and methanol based fuels, and agricultural chemicals.

Do not use with strong acids, strong bases, ethyl acetate, bleach, strong oxidizing agents, phenol, mineral acids, and ethylene glycol.
Material is not UV stable. Over time, exposure to UV light will cause discoloration.
For indoor use. Material will degrade with UV exposure.

Ammonia is considered a weak base, and as you can see above, STRONG bases should be avoided. Just to be safe, I'd reccommend not subjecting the delrin to the Windex anyway. Just the very little chlorine in drinking water causes Polyoxymethylene plastic (delrin) to corrode, which is why it can't be used in potable water pipes anymore (only realized after massive failure across the US of said potable water pipes).

Holy cow. Didn't think about the chlorine in tap water. Glad you said that!!!

Ok this question probably has a shorter answer:). What is good to use to clean it? Thanks again for you time answering back:)

I have used rubbing alcohol on mine and it didn't make any marks or anything so either that or tap water. Tap water will be fine is alcohol doesn't affect it then water wouldn't either.

If it gets too dirty, I'd think a damp rag would be fine. Water shouldn't hurt it just subjecting it to it for that short of a time. Remember, those pipe fittings that failed are usually constantly filled with water, so always subjected to the chlorine in it (even if it is a small amount). But if it's not covered in gunk, I'd say just a quick wipe down with a good auto detailing microfiber cloth would clean both the case and the phone's screen. This is what I always use, even when my phone's screen gets covered in skin oil from my face. A good microfiber cloth is pretty remarkable in its cleaning abilities. And it leaves no streaks.

I have used rubbing alcohol on mine and it didn't make any marks or anything so either that or tap water. Tap water will be fine is alcohol doesn't affect it then water wouldn't either.

Tap water DOES affect delrin, again, it does have enough chlorine in to corrode delrin over LONG exposure. That's why all those pipe fittings made of it failed (wikipedia even says it was one of the largest class action lawsuits ever in the USA). But, the length of exposure of just cleaning the case shouldn't cause any long term damage. Again, I don't see the case being able to get dirty enough to need cleaning by anything more than a dry microfiber cloth.

What I am interested in is seeing the white delrin cases after about a year though. Natural (white) delrin has a nasty habit of turning a yellowy (dirty teeth looking) color after a while, and it accelerated by light exposure.

Ouch ! So I wonder when version 3 will be out ! How thin was the coating and does it look like the rest will peel off, ie once it starts is there no stopping it ??

One thing that I just though of that might be of interest for you to do would be to take the delrin piece off and give it a really good cleaning with something like rubbing alcohol. What you might be "peeling off" just might be residue left from the manufacturing process. They may have used a cutting lubricant (some shops do with delrin, some don't). It's not always necessary, but can help with the milling of the material. If you rub it down with alcohol and the entire surface ends up looking like the areas under the parts you "peeled off", then it's probably machining residue, and you'll be fine.

Well out of everyone that has bought this case, this is the only one I have seen do this. The last time I talked to them when they refunded for one of my cases they had sold like 7000 or something like that. So it may just be a freak thing because the email I got said they had sold around 7000 and not 1 returned so who knows what happened to that particular case. Nobody else's had done it.

Only thing I use to clean is piece of cloth to wipe stuff off. I haven't used any chemicals or solvents to clean it. On the side where it's flaking, I was able to take off about half the side just by pulling it off with scotch tape. In any case, Atomic said to send the frame back and they'll check with engineering. Atomic also noted that there is a coating and it's baked on so it shouldn't do that unless I soaked it in some solvent.

Are they sending you out a replacement prior to you sending it back, or are you stuck without a case until they return it to you?

Atomic will be sending a replacement out via Overnight Fedex in addition to 2 extra caps :) Customer Support asked me to send my frame after I received the new one via snail mail and Atomic will even pay for the shipping via a paypal refund. At this point, I'm very pleased with how Atomic handled this situation. It seems they are very proactive in making customers happy.

Good deal, glad they took care of you. I would like to know what exactly caused that. Like I said, I have a black and white case and have put them through hell and nothing. So I wonder what they will find out when they get it back. Cool they overnighted you a replacement though.

That is awesome!!! I've really been pleased with their service as well. Extra caps too. Maybe it's lucky that it peeled:). Haahaa
