According to reports, the symptoms are present when running under either Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6, but absent when booted under Windows via Boot Camp. The glitch, which is reportedly highly reproducible, has been claimed to boost internal CPU temperatures by in excess of 30 degrees Celsius, while also dramatically increasing power consumption for what should be a relatively minor task.

Looks like Apple needs to fix Mac OS X 10.5/10.6 core service. I suspect 2010 Mac Pro model or Arrandale MBP may also suffer similar issue as it's OS compatibility with Core microarchitecture. It's sad Apple only spent resource on iPad instead of Pro line product.

It really is disappointing to hear Apple take the road of denial on this one.

I dont own a 2009 Mac Pro, but It sure as hell has put me off even considering a 2010 model.

When will companies like Apple get it about customer service. Now its making the front pages they will act... but too late in my opinion.

My respect for Apple just dropped down a notch.. and it affects their other products too.. do I really want to buy a Rev A iPad from a company that is

a) renown for poor Rev A versions of their hardware

b) in denial over support issues like this

Makes you think twice doesnt it....

I agree, but just Wait till the FanBoys get a hold of your comment, they dont like people like us...

I have to say that the iPad, iPhone and iPod even though they are cool and money maker to Apple, I wished they would focus much harder on their computer business.
Specially when it comes to the professional end.

Cinema displays need a huge update, 30" is so damn old, MacPro's have not been redesign in ages, nothing wrong with their current case, but that is a proof Apple is not pushing the envelope on that segment.

That's too bad.

Ok, Apple is going to get shred to pieces over this issue. And I guess it sounds like they deserve it.

But this is the first time I hear about this.

Yeah I was waiting for a real "tablet" then the iPad came along, I was like funk that. I'm getting a Dell 10V. Every works great on that. I'm getting it with the blue-tooth and wi-fi N upgrade for $299, then just up the memory and I'm set. I'm tired of waiting around for Apple to get it together.

that's EXACTLY what i ordered, the day iPad was announced.

I'm having the same issue with my 27" i7. Logic running for 5 seconds of record time ramps up the fans to 5000 RPM. One of the major selling points of the original apple logic was that fans would not ramp up when you were recording, they would wait until record was disengaged or it would self disengage if the core got to hot. When I called Pro Software support to open up a case they said this was still the case with Logic Studio 8 and 9.

When I play music in any format I'm having the same issue, mp3, wav, aiff etc. Oddly enough any other resource intensive application such as video editing does not cause the fans to ramp up. I'm really bummed out about the whole thing, I hope they fix it.

What does this now mean for Macbook Pro's

Serious.. can all you macbook pro fanboys go to your own topic and whine about when it's being released?! I'm seriously getting annoyed with all the 'what about our macbook pro' in mac pro topics.. STOP IT!

I really hate to say this but it doesn't surprise me in the least. I've owned two macs now, a 13" MB and my current 17" MBP, and they've both experienced serious issues which are clearly design faults that Apple doesn't want to acknowledge and resolve.

The MB suffered the cracked palm rest o' doom which, on the second replacement in less than a year, the Genius said was a design flaw where there was nothing supporting the palm rest where the top case met the bottom and the 'rubbing strips' were simply breaking the case. He admitted it wasn't going to be resolved and it was a good job the machine had Applecare.

The MBP... jesus this has been the WORST computer I've ever owned by a mile. It's been back to the Genius bar on about six occasions now, most importantly for a swollen battery which Apple REFUSED to admit was a manufacturing defect until I started reading the riot act (in the UK they don't have a legal leg to stand on with that issue). The replacement battery has lasted six months and now shorts out occasionaly going from 90% charge and 94% health to 0% charge and, once the mains cable's back in, 12% health in an instant. Oh, and 'Genius' involved in the case reckoned it was something in OS X causing it and I should reinstall my OS...

I do think Apple have got their laptop line if not fixed then at least to a far better level of quality than the machines I've used (2006 MB and 2007 MBP) but there's still far too many issues sneaking through in their computer line that really should be caught and recalled (27" iMac anyone?). Such a shame, I love the OS, I love the design but I'm struggling to justify another one.

In mine, and about 6 people I know's experience that is absolutely how Apple UK operates.

no surprise to me.

Don't struggle to justify another purchase...

just don't make one.

Apple has been positively awful at preventing and correcting audio performance problems. It's embarrassing; OS updates cause problems then it takes them a year to fix them. Mac audio outputs suffer from nasty noise problems (not sure about latest models, I gave up trying). Anyone still saying that Macs are better for pro audio use is fooling him/herself, IMO.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with audio problems. I have (early 2006 mini), (late 2006 macbook), (early 2009 macbook), (latest imac 21.5" 3.33GHz), and the only one I can plug speakers into without tons of various noises at different times is the 2006 mini. The newest imac is the noisiest of them all. If I had to depend on my imac for audio, I couldn't unless I streamed it to the mini. I have tried line suppressors, played around with ups', tried various external usb interfaces, but nothing helps. Why are mac audio outputs so damn noisy?

Hey, at least they replaced your battery... I was forced to buy a new one when mine swelled to 3 times normal size. They told me it was part of the design - to swell rather than explode. What a crock.

Haha, this.

Screw Apple, build your own computer then Hackint0sh it. At least you will know it works good.

Do u realize the upkeep on a hackintash? I don't mean the people who are still running 10.5.8 for whatever reason, I'm saying people who want the latest software and updates from apple are kinda screwed if you want to go that route. I don't want to spend 3 days trying to get the latest version working just to have it break the next.

Apple screws you over anyways. Look at all the PPC people who could not upgrade to Snow Leopard. I know quite a few people who have hackintoshs, including myself, when an update comes all we have to do is replace a few kext, nothing big, and easy to do. As long as you have a supported video card, and an intel chip, you are all set, and good to go.

i've got a little netbook in the post... then if that works all ok, i will seriously consider building a desktop system. it seems a number of dissatisfied customers are leaning this way in the last year or 2.

Well, I did just that. I built an E8400 desktop last year and put 10.5 on it. It has worked marvelously well, so much in fact that I built ANOTHER system (Core i7) and this time put 10.6 on it and it runs at 64 bit BY DEFAULT. I've been playing with my copies of CS4, FCS and they both run without any problems. Hell, I can even run FLASH and iTunes without so much as a hiccup.
I'm VERY tempted to put my first hack into my production environment (web and video production), seeing that it has worked so well, but I'm still torn by the legality of it, you know, the EULA and all, although all my software is legal, even my OSX family pack.

Well

I have been doing software updates straight from Apple and Adobe in both my hacks and so far I haven't experienced ANY problems whatsoever.

EDIT: I made it up to Member! I'm no longer a newbie!! YAY!! Ok. I'm good now.

I bought my macbook pro in september of 2009. Is that considered an Early 2009 model?

Oh thanks for the clarification. And how can I tell if it has the Nehalem chip? Mine is 2.53 ghz.
if you stated macbook pro in your earlier post, this refers to the Desktop workstation Mac Pro, not MacBOOK Pro.
2.53 is a MBP model. and yours is probably a early 2009 or mid 2009 model MBP. depending on their cycle dates.

So in other words, Mac Pros are great email machines.
haha, maybe not...might consume 2x as much power and be warm to send that measly email.

I might hunt for a 2008 Octo, I never had any trouble with that. How much are fb-dimms these days?
the 2008 models, imo were the best update to the line. never had a single issue with them.
I bought FBDIMMS for them off newegg (2x2GB) for like 104$ in the fall of 2008, so i can only imagine theyd be alittle cheaper than that.

Hmmm...Snow Leopard glitches, the '09 iMacs with unresolved screen problems, and now this? Whatever happened to "it just works?"
QFT, Snow Leopard runs fine WHEN i dont run anything but SL, no 3rd party apps (esp CS2 - CS4)
Im glad i still have my Leopard machine.

Hopefully it gets fixed, they looked like a decent upgrade....but there is just something off about them that i held off for; perhaps this is it.

what's wrong with apple.. their +2000€ MacPro has problems playing simple mp3s? wow... (this is not "anti-apple"... but still... WOW:eek:)

and yet with hundreds of posts across at least two boards if not more, there hasn't been a huge class action suit. they don't even have to prove a number of affected people to file. probably easier than a patent suit to kick up.
