Apple Stores STARTED in Australia years ago!

An interesting point is that Apple stores STARTED in Australia years ago as "Apple Centres" which were privately owned but had much the look and feel as current Apple stores (all glass fronts, open spaces, etc.). These stores, which sold only Apple hardware, went out of business several years ago. The store in Canberra looked like a miniature Apple store of today.

Why another in Sydney? The thing that really cheeses me off about Apple is why they would open up two stores in close proximity in one city! Take the UK for example, there are 2 Apple stores in Manchester and one in Sheffield. Stupid!!! 3 stores so close together. The next northern store is in Glasgow!!! If you happen to live in Newcastle upon Tyne (which is one of the UK's nicest cities by the way) then you have a 2.5 hour drive to the nearest store. The centre of Newcastle, in particular "Grey Street" is perfect for an Apple Store. Then there's the metro centre in Gateshead.

Here's a picture of Grey Street

So, is there a logical reason as to why Apple would have so many stores in close proximity? And why is that better than spreading the stores further apart, thus being exposed to more customers?

If you know anything about where the two Manchester stores are located it would make sense.

There should be at least one in Newcastle and I am sure you will eventually get one, but there is no reason why Manchester shouldn't have two, and London have how many it has.

I still don't really get what all the fuss is about (sorry). There are stores that sell apple products already (Mac1, for instance). We have one RIGHT ON CAMPUS :-D and they have mac genius people there... So what is so special about this store (apart from the pretty black which matches my mac book heh heh)?

Do they sell things you can't get off the Apple Australia Online Store?

What they going to do with all that space? Stock up on i-phones??

;-)

Me thinks it'll be a long time 'til I see an Apple store in South Australia...

Yes, I guess we'll just have to put up with nextbyte for the moment. Mind you, adelaide is barely a city, so I don't expect we'll be seeing an official apple store anytime within the next 20 years.

King Street

ok, you Sydney duses...remind me where King Street is...I grew up in Sydney in the 60s but have been away 30 yrs +....is it downtown (near Circular Q) or up near the cross??

Because Apple does a lot of careful market research before opening up a store. It's not enough to just have a nice city and rich people, they only open in areas where it will service "Apple-like" people.

Google is your friend

sydney is the cest pit of Australia

GO MELBOURNE
At least we know how to spell Cesspit! Unless you mean the Zest Pit? (Or maybe it's French: C'est Pit)

Off George Street, in the CBD (the building is right on the corner), not far from the Pitt Street Mall.

I was very surprised to read that this will be the first :apple: Store south of the Equator. Not just in Australia or New Zealand, but when you think about the massive population in South America (Rio, Sau Paulo, Buenos Aires), not to mention South Africa, that is a large market that's completely unserved by Apple at the retail level.

I know the standard of living is generally lower in some of those areas, but it still seems like this would be a large opportunity for expansion for :apple: in the next decade or so.

i think it's great that they have a store there now (or are building it). i think it's great for apple to have these stores in all these different countries

why so many stores in one city?

Spoken like a true resident of Bleak City (aka Melbourne) ... and mate, it's 'cesspit'.

In America it's "cesspool" (kind of conjures of images of a more liquid experience, huh?)

Anywho, when you open more branches in one city there tends to more sales than a single store can muster. This is why there's a Starbucks on every corner.

It's always best to pace one's self when opening new stores. You never know if you've got it right in each instance and the variability of the economy can make the up front investment quite a gamble. These stores don't come cheap.

Cheers to the Aussies - I'm a big fan of Syndey (been twice) -- but have to see more of this large country and realize there's a lot more to it than what I've seen.

Honestly, I think Apple is building too many stores too quickly and too close together. Its going to come back and bite them in the butt eventually.

Remember how just before the MacAir came out Apple had this sign that said "There's something in the Air".

Well, I got to thinking what "Drop in Soon" might be portending.

The iDrop perhaps? For people who stare at the tiny iPhone screens too long.

Or maybe the iSoon... the Zune killer. A poke in the i for MicroSoft.

I wouldn't mind having another in my state...."Apple you forgot about me!" Seriously though, I'm going all the way to DC just to walk in an Apple Store ;)

wow. no, I mean, really, wow!

Sydney Morning Herald reports that Apple has posted a teaser sign at the location of the first Apple Store in Australia.

The sign reads "Drop in soon. Apple Store, Sydney". Located at 77 King Street, the three story building is expected to have about 1335 square meters of floor space. While no official launch date has been announced, rumors point to June 19th at 6pm as the opening date. According to SMH, this is the first Apple Store to be located in the southern hemisphere.

I can't believe this thread got 80 comments on it. You'd think somebody had just posted an official 3G iphone pic here. So wow. That's all I can say. Wow...that a story of such profound meaninglessness would garner so much interest. Hehehe.

Didn't they say a while ago Germany's also having their first Apple store? I thought the fruit chain-retailer were an abundant. In Taiwan I spotted at least 3. In SA I saw 1 - which was a 3rd party authorised iStore.

...to have about 1335 square meters of floor space.
Pretty cool and all, if only it were to be 2 square feet larger.. ^__^
and yeah, this is what I thought. 2 under that number. I guess Apple doesn't speak leet.

Oh, it's in metres, not in feet. 1 square ft is about 3/10 of 1 square metre.
Those of you confusing the heck out of meter and metre, meter is the measuring gauge (e.g. voltmeter), and metre is the measuring unit. Of course, this is British English. Just another trivia.

square meters

1335 + 2 = 1337 square feet XD

The article says 1335 square meters. 1 meter=3.28 ft, 1 square meter = 3.28 feet x 3.28 feet = 10.76 square feet. 1335 square meters x 10.76 square feet = ~ 14,365 square feet.

Thats a huge store now that I think about it. It's much bigger than those in and around Portland, OR.

Edit: BTW i got the 1337/leet joke, i just wanted to convert the units if anybody was interested.

Jordan how the hell did you beat me to this?!?

PS its mat!

oh HEY MATY!!!! i didnt know you joined MR! ill be speaking to ya soon :p

would you want to buy a 24inch iMac on holiday?

Marmite >>>>>>> Vegemite

Er... How is an apple store different from Mac1 or from the online Mac Australia store???

or even nextbyte. nextbyte is gonna loose SO much business if more apple stores are brought out... theyve been so good to us and had the majority of sales.

is that now nextbyte??
