I was very surprised to read that this will be the firstStore south of the Equator. Not just in Australia or New Zealand, but when you think about the massive population in South America (Rio, Sau Paulo, Buenos Aires), not to mention South Africa, that is a large market that's completely unserved by Apple at the retail level.
I know the standard of living is generally lower in some of those areas, but it still seems like this would be a large opportunity for expansion forin the next decade or so.
I was surprised about that, too. I was walking around Buenos Aires when I saw what I thought was an Apple store. This was in the Recoleta area, which is where the old money Argentinians live. When I peered inside, it was decorated almost like a US apple store, except of the small space of course. I guess it could have been just an authorized reseller.
Walking around in BA, there was a lot of people with apple earphones on, so there are people who can at least afford ipods.
