what is Apple doing with all the returned iPads? I assume all are in perfect condition EXCEPT the light bleeding problem.

Are they just just going to use those as refurbished units for warranty replacement and hope the next owner won't notice the light bleeding problem? :)

I've wondered the same thing myself. People are constantly saying that refurbs aren't in the system, but I don't think they're getting their facts straight. I remember iPad 1 was refurb on apples site by april or may of the same year. I've also read on other forums that some people who got replacements have had some customer info still on the iPad 2, as if they (apple) were taking the returned iPad 2s and reboxing them.

I know from personal experience working for many different tech companies and vendors, that some do this (nvidia video cards, ATI video cards, NetGear, Cisco, and merchants like Fry's)...unfortunately its almost common practice as long as they can get away with it, no one is the wiser. Blindly trusting a company "policy" is ludicrous, especially if the company doesn't follow their policies internally. When it comes down to the wire, its not customer satisfaction they want, its profit margins. But hell, maybe Apple's different? who knows really.

What do you guys think is the better option:

A) Go to the Apple store and get a replacement, but risk having another crappy unit and wasting my time.

or

B) Just get a refund and wait it out, but be without my ipad for another month or two.

I can't decide!

Get the replacement, if its worse, return and wait. Thats what i did...maybe it'll work for you?

It is pretty well known that Apple's warranty replacements are 99% of the time refurbs.

Perhaps the return rate is so high that there has been no surplus refurb stock to sell off?

I'm going to exchange mine at the store ONCE, and if that doesn't fix it, I'm going to wait a bit and then RMA with Apple - hopefully once all the quality control issues are worked out.

This is from an iPad I bought yesterday at target (DLXF9). Doesn't seem that bad. Has something in the lower left hand corner. What do you guys think? As I side note I am loving the ipad in general. 100% brightness.

I just re-ordered with Apple and the iPad 2 is going to arrive tomorrow via FedEx. (64GB 3G AT&T BLACK)

How will I know if it has absolutely no problems? Does anyone have a photo of the iPad 2 without backlight issues?

I thought the shipment delay when ordering from Apple was 1-2 weeks? How did you manage to order today for arrival tomorrow?

4th iPad 2 replacement is DLXFP. No light bleeding at all but such a shame that I have to replace this one too because the the frame is separating from the aluminum back.

I like to have all my original boxing - can somebody let me know if you get a replacement do they give you a new box?

or do you keep old one and they just give u a new unit? if so it like iPhones where the box reads the serial number etc or is it blank?

I want to know for resale purposes

When I exchanged my original (purchased 5/13, serial number DN6FN) on the same day for backlight bleed), I was offered by the Genius the option of either taking one of the service replacements (brown box), or ordering a new retail-boxed unit through the store (they had no more retail-boxed units in stock).

The retail box does have the serial number of the unit I exchanged, but I don't intend to resell.

I'm glad, however, I opted for the service replacement (DLXFK) because it has a great screen.

are you guys bothered with the warm screen of the replacement units or have you got used to it? i usually notice that whites are a little gray-ish especially when i'm on facebook site. is this something that apple can fix using software updates by calibrating the lcd screen?

That's a good question. I put it side-by-side with my iPad 1 and cannot discern a difference on the warmth vs coolness scale...Maybe it's just my eyes...LOL...but the iPad 2 looks fine to me compared to my iPad 1.

What do you guys say? Left is my first one, Right is my replaced device. (100% Brightness)
Could hardly see when the brightness is at 60%..
Should I keep or go for another one, which would risk me again.

Thanks for that info it's appreciated.

One more thing did you originally purchase at the Apple store? If I purchase through b&h it wouldn't matter right I'd still be able to get it swapped and replaced via the Apple store?

Hi, Bobright...

Yes, I purchased my iPad at the Santa Monica Apple Store the morning of 5/13. Returned home with it. Checked for light bleed, and immediately made a Genius appointment at the Manhattan Village store (a bit closer to me) that afternoon.

Regardless where you purchased it, you are covered under Apple's one year warranty which permits you to bring it into the Apple Store at any time during that period. So, yes, you will be able to get it swapped and replaced at the Apple Store.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you. There ARE good units/screens out there so hopefully yours will be one of them. It seems that there are more and more reports of good screens the last week or so...at least here on Macrumors.

I also compared mine side by side with the ipad 2 on the retail store and i noticed the difference. Sometimes my eyes get used to it but sometimes i get bothered.

True that, sometimes I feel like keeping.. but then scared if the new , replaced, on will be even worse

We had a vendor in and he had a 64GB AT&T White iPad 2. I asked if he would mind if I took a look at it. 100% brightness and no backlight bleed. I was so jealous, but it was actually refreshing to actually see a perfect iPad 2 in the wild, and that the wife saw it too! Then he hit me with a shocker when I asked when he purchased it: A couple days after launch at Best Buy!

His first 5 digits of his S/N is: DLXFK

User512, if you want to update your table:
K week 16 (X-nickbarbs-OK)(X-sword28-OK)(T-hughmann-bad)(T-jaikob-OK)(X-built-OK)(X-hughmann(vendor)-OK).

I have a coworker and another vendor both who's iPads I've seen that have backlight bleed (the coworker's was worse than the vendor's). I'll see if I can get their S/Ns

high school friend(more like drinking/smoking buddies! :D ) who now works for Apple corporate sent the order in for me.... the cheapskate wouldn't even get me an employee discount.... to think that I got his kid a brand new Playstation3 for birthday.... on the other hand, I'm just grateful that I can get it in one day. :D (64GB 3G AT&T BLACK isn't not easy to come by locally)
