is this worth taking back to the apple store? i kind of wanted a new one anyways so i could have my screen protector on front & back before even turning it on lol. i heard someone say something like you can only return it once, but i see people returning it multiple times. i have all the time in the world, i want mine to be problem-free. backlight bleeding is a problem.

it looks worse in person than it does in the pictures, but if i didn't have a black background i would have probably never noticed.

...seems Apple is doing something (maybe they are reading our thread). In any case it should be confirmed in the next days/weeks. I got mine, first try and a very nice screen. (Some of the red/bad additions today are old bad units they speak about them in the last posts so I have to include them too).

new additions: Q-(6-user512-OK) J-(X-Brad02-bad) J-(X-Brad02-OK) T-(X-lostboyz-OK) R-(X-Extract0r-bad) R-(X-Jay858-OK) P-(X-blue43fan-OK) P-(6-gusnyc-bad) 8-(X-rabdel12-OK) N-(6-rabdel12-bad) D-(X-kfscoll-OK) Q-(6-tmt345-OK) 7-(X-realjd-OK)

Read it as: week-(factory-user-condition).

(**) 4th character is half of the year. Will be 'F' for first, 'G' for second half.
(***) 5th character is week of manufacturing from previous table.

ps.- If your serial# starts with DLXFP. You have an iPad2 made at (DLX) factory, is made in the first half of the year (F) and on week 20 (P)
ps2.- post your first 5 characters of your serial and if you have a good backlight or the bleeding problem.
ps3.- any error in the table?, let me know.

I felt the same, then I started watching video...and I noticed big time. :/

so it's worth taking back? can i do this multiple times until i get one that im satisfied with or do they only allow you to do it once? i was planning on buying applecare here soon too, will that transfer everytime i swap it out?

So my DLXF7 S/N means it was manufactured on week 7? Why would I have received one made so early if I ordered late May and only just received it?

Yes. If your serial fifth character is a '7', that's your week. Really don't know the reason of getting a model so young. I could speculate on that but really don't know...

Gonna try one more replacement (my 5th) before i give up.

Really want one but not with bad bleed and 2 dead pixels.

Just phoned them:
oh buggers they wont let me they said 3 is the maximum amount of times you can return it they let me do a 4th out of good will.

So they are refunding it, but giving me £125 as a good will gesture for my next purchase from the Apple Store.

Thats OK will leave it a few weeks and order again.

when you return the ipad do you have to give them the actual box and everything? do they only give you a brown box with an ipad in it? can you keep the box it came with but give them the ipad 2 so when you get the brown box you can have everything. even though the serial code will be off. damnit this doesn't make sense to me.

Like I said before it seems they purposely do it this way to sock it back to you and screw up resale value.

well can i return the ipad 2 for my money back? then just buy a new one from them? its a defected ipad 2.

Maybe we're really reading the serial numbers (the 5th character) wrong?  LOL! :D

However, it seems like most of the latest batch of iPad 2 units are showing significant signs of improvement in terms of getting one with minimum to no backlight bleeding. :) That's great news for everyone. :)

i just bought mine brand new saturday and it has backlight bleeding issues.

so can i return this and get money back to buy another new one? or am i forced to be screwed and get an unknown brown box ipad 2?

No demand your money back if you please they can't deny you.

I take from this thread you can also have a look at a replacement if it's bad you could then opt for the refund.

Personally I hardly ever buy direct from Apple because most of the "genius" are idiot douches it's unless I really have to go in there that I do.

I'm afraid to get a replacement if they don't give you the retail box, serial code, etc... Who knows, the ipad could be refurbished and might break down sooner than the one i have now. it's kind of ridiculous they won't give you a brand new one since that's what you bought.

People seem to be having much more success as far as light bleeding, with brown box versions, so you're hardly being "screwed". You can return it for a new one if you want, but I'd recommend going for a brown box one.

what is inside the brown box? just an ipad? can you keep your box that your original ipad came in?

The genius will swap just the brown box ipad with yours. You keep the retail box and accessories. Based on the anecdotal evidence in this thread it does seem that the brown box units are better in terms of light bleed. Personally I've had two retail units with bad light bleed. The first I returned for a refund and the second I exchanged for a brown box unit. The replacement ipad has virtually no light bleed at 100% brightness. YMMV.

Thanks! So i technically i can either get a full money refund or get a brown box replacement? Also, after if i opt for a brown box replacement and it doesn't satisfy me, do i still have the choice for a full refund or another replacement?

As long as you're within the 14 day return period, you can return it whether its a brown box or the original iPad you bought.

Will they give me a hard time for returning it for a full refund and getting a new one? I understand that the brown box models that they're giving out seem to have less problems but i don't like the point of having a unknown ipad with no serial code to reference to on my box. Also i have no proof that the ipad is new, for all i know they might be giving me a used one that will break down quicker than the current one i own. I understand i might have to make multiple trips out there though if i keep buying new ones with problems.

or i could just keep buying and opening them there and testing it out before leaving...

I returned my iMac 27" 6 times before I got one without yellow tinge, and my iPad once, and was never once given any trouble. I'd say Apple is above average when it comes to customer service and dealing with problems and returns.
