They might give you a sticker with the new serial number on it. It's what they did to me when I returned my white iPhone before because of cracks and they gave me a new phone.

so it's worth taking back? can i do this multiple times until i get one that im satisfied with or do they only allow you to do it once? i was planning on buying applecare here soon too, will that transfer everytime i swap it out?

really only you can decide....i can say mine, i believe, is worsening with age.

well i swapped mine just a little bit ago and tested it while i was there. i forgot to set the brightness up to 100 tho (it was at 50%) and it was like a border around the entire screen but it wasn't spreading out towards the screen as much as my first one. Is this normal or is there supposed to be absolutely none of that yellow/orange stuff past 1cm?

also, the guy there said i can only get a replacement once. after that he said the only thing i can do is ask for a refund and/or buy a new ipad 2. if i buy a new ipad with the refund money though i won't be able to get it replaced again. how the hell are some of you replacing it multiple times?

I would ask for a refund.....Then buy it again.:p
The one time policy is a joke.
When they exchanged my iPhone, I got a really yellow hue/tint iPhone didin't even left the store,
Had to make another appointment with the Genius Bar so they can exchange it out again and the person helping me was rude about it.

is this worth taking back to the apple store? i kind of wanted a new one anyways so i could have my screen protector on front & back before even turning it on lol. i heard someone say something like you can only return it once, but i see people returning it multiple times. i have all the time in the world, i want mine to be problem-free. backlight bleeding is a problem.

it looks worse in person than it does in the pictures, but if i didn't have a black background i would have probably never noticed.

I'm glad you took it back! I plan on doing so if mine arrives with the leakage, too. Could you tell us where you live? It seems that the Apple stores in other countries seem to have a different return policy. I've read of people returning them multiple times, too, so I don't think this is the policy in all stores.

Hey all,

You shouldn't be questioned or argued with over returning it again. If a product is defective, it is defective. Now if you are being picky, okay, I understand. But if the genius CLEARLY acknowledges that a problem (or the same problem the original replacement was for) IS present, then they shouldn't say "Oh, we will give you a second try, but we can't give you another one because it's the same problem" or otherwise.

Anyways,

My tip is this:
If you JUST bought your iPad 2 at a retail establishment OR have replaced your unit multiple times to no avail, call Apple Customer Support and ask for a CUSTOMER REPLACEMENT. This type of replacement (similar to an advance replacement) will get you an iPad first, overnight, without having to send yours away and wait a week.

NOW, Customer Replacements are a PRIVELEDGE and must be approved by Customer Relations (the highest Apple Support channel a consumer can talk to directly). However, if you do, the benefits are:
  • Your credit card will be stored, but NOT authorized for the full retail price (or any charge) so long as the original is returned within 30 days
  • The iPad you receive will NOT be a brown box model, but rather a FULL RETAIL model with packaging and all, usually directly from the factory when a product is so new and in demand as the iPad is
  • Shipping is overnight, and you can compare iPads and if you get one, CR is usually very nice and allows you at least another Customer Replacement

So these are very beneficial. I suggest going through Apple's Express Lane and setting up a case and call-option, then when you talk to the initial Tier-1 rep, explain your problem, explain to the if you have had other replacements / this is your FIRST iPad with the issue, that you want to speak to their Support Specialist / Supervisor about receiving a "Customer Replacement" from customer relations. If they don't know what you are talking about or tell you it is not an option, ask to speak with their supervisor, as they do not have the authority to decide whether or not you get one.

If Customer Relations or their Support Specialist tells you they can't allow it, then you are out of luck. But explain the situation, tell them you think it will give you a better chance, and that you would prefer / are unable to pre-authorize your card for the amount and don't feel you have to spend a week without your iPad for an issue they are responsible for.

Be nice, caring, and patient, and you will usually get a good response.

If you get approved for a Customer Replacement, that day or the next business day you will receive a call and an email from someone in Customer Relations who will explain the process. They will email you a PDF that you will need to sign and send back, stating they are replacing your iPad 2 with the same model as a customer replacement, and that they will charge you if you do not return it. Once that is sent in they will give you an order number, and then you wait. It should only take a few days, then they will ship your replacement overnight and you will receive it in its retail box - glory. After you receive it inspect it, ensure there are no issues, then let your advisor know and they will send you a label for FedEx / UPS to send it back and then you are good to go.

I just purchased an iPad 2 16GB WiFi + 3G AT&T from Target and it has SEVERE lightbleeding (its a DN6FP serial) and I called. The first lady I got was abrasive and told me I would have to mail it in, NO other options. I called back and the gentleman was very helpful, explained all of my options, listened when I explained what I was requesting and got me to his supervisor. His supervisor, Jordan, was very attentive, listened and got the approval from Customer Relations, saying "Oh yes they had no problem approving this for you, it's obviously something you paid a lot of money for and certainly shouldn't have to wait a week to get back. I am surprised you know about the customer replacement option, but obviously this is so new and obviously a defect that we have no problem getting this set up." So he filled out the paperwork and I will receive a call tomorrow from Customer Relations (and I have his number too just in case).

Meanwhile my iPad 2 32GB WiFi + 3G AT&T is FINALLY in Anchorage, shipped on the 5th FedEx Economy, should've upgraded to Expedited but I didn't realize. Should be here Wednesday or Thursday and THANKFULLY is a DLXF7 serial that people don't seem to be having problems with.

Sorry for the long post, but I hope this helps! PM me if you have any questions and I will be happy to help you out :) I want to see everyone get what they want, and that's a product with a quality par they paid for :)

Looks like Apple is doing something right. Just received mine. Backlight bleed is ok. It's still there but not as pronounced. Also the display is warmer so I am guessing it's a Samsung display.

How do you go about getting your iPad repaired for backlight bleed? Just tell Apple its an issue and they replace it?

Me too. Totally fine at 50% in a pitch black room. At 100% in a totally black room there is some but it doesn't catch the eye with letterbox movies (I tried it out) so I'm good to go. Plus I've never used it at 100 percent in total darkness to watch movies - I'd kill my eyes!

My last one you could see the yellow moon glow lighting up the dock and through various colours. It was pretty bad.

I can't remember my numbers but I'm pretty sure it is: DN6FR (def. R is in it)

My screen also seems warmer so it's probably the samsung.

just got my second ipad.

U guys think its a keeper?

well the genius there said i can only get a "replacement ipad" once. if i buy a brand new one then i still won't be able to get a replacement ipad. i guess maybe i can still return that and get another one new?

anyway im gonna wait a few more days before i open it and really look at it. i only looked at it at 50% like an idiot in the apple store. its probably a LOT worse at 100% if i can see it at 50%.

I sent my iPad for repair to apple via mail for light bleeding Just recieved an email stating there was no problem and it will be sent back. Is that it? Is there anything else I can do? I'm pretty pissed that this is just being sent back tO me.

Man, I guess I get all the (bad) luck. My DLX unit that I really liked got some weird problems and I had to return it. All I can find in stores now are DN6s. Looked through several(!) now and every one of them has at least one hot pixel; some had several. Interestingly, more than half were fine on bleed including the one I currently have. Trying to decide whether to return or just live with a hot pixel which appears a couple mm from the top edge. On the plus side, the backlight is very even compared to what I usually see on ipads and it doesn't have as much of a color cast as I'm used to seeing with what appears to be the Samsung screen. I think I would have immediately tried for another replacement but I have yet to see this model screen without a hot pixel in the DN6 series. I guess I could try brown box but they say you can't return them and are stuck trying to coax a "Genius" to swap
the unit if you get a bad one :(

Comparison between my first iPad and the replacement set. The second one is alot better. But the wall charger is not working! Well, I guess that is a lesser problem.

Are people reliably receiving DLX* units ordering over the phone? It seems to be extremely difficult to get them in a store now.

Could this be Apple's solution?

"Apple has reportedly tapped Chimei Innolux to boost their supply of panels for the iPad 2."

A different supplier?

Hello guys.. Here in Greece , Europe there is also a whole iPad community that copes with this specific ipad 2 problem. My personal experience after four replacements has left me with a little bit of bitter taste in my mouth... Every iPad that I have received up to today has a various amount of backlight bleeding.. The last device i've received ( the so called brown box replacement , I would say ,in my case " brown letter envelope " ) has a s/n starting with DLXFM and is the best so far iPad 2 I've ever experienced with minimal bleeding within "acceptable" limits.. However, I'm going to ask via AppleCare for another exchange betting again at this "casino roulette " given the fact that chime innolux gives us something to hope for... I really hope to get this time a sealed new device as I was informed last time by apple.. What really frustrates me is tha in every electronic store here in Athens all the demo iPads are carefully chosen to be bleed-free starting with DLX and a common response of all the supposed tech "gurus" of these stores is that the problem lies at the glue issue that hasn't yet dried.. Lol! one month and my 4th iPad hasn't yet dried.. Maybe i'll take it with me at Myconos for a little sunbathing .. Sorry for my desperate little manifest ..
