yes sir, that does look bad. looks like you got yellow "glue" and flashlighting on the bottom there. honestly, you don't really need a black image to see it, if you notice it in a youtube video or something, then i would consider making a trip or giving apple a call. just my 2 cents.

It's miss ;)
After thinking about it, I'll rather stick with it because I could end up with a worse copy and not be able to exchange that one. 25 % brightness is bright enough for me and I really can't see it there, but I listened to your advice and watched a few YT videos at a higher brightness and didn't notice it either, thanks anyways. Maybe the photo over exaggerated it.

As long as you're happy with it that's all that matters. I'm getting my 5th iPad replacement soon, and if it's somewhat acceptable I'm just going to keep it. It's pretty much impossible to get a good one, which is funny since Apple always says its "a rare problem"

Just a heads up for those in the norcal area...anywhere around san jose I should say, go to the VALLEY FAIR apple store. There and only there have I gotten the best service and no hassle exchanges. Seriously, I've been to almost every apple store in this area out to 75 miles out and can tell you from personal experience that the genius' at the valley fair store are a lot more friendly and understanding and this is 100% of the time. I've had coworkers who have been turned down for exchanges at other stores and I direct them to valley fair and they have been more than pleased with their results...also they've been getting their fair share of non-bleed units in. HOWEVER, the sales people can be jerks at this store, make sure to have an appointment and you'll be taken care of. I've gone through numerous exchanges with them and not once have they ever said there was some kind of policy for exchanges on ipads and how many you can get. Best of luck to everyone.

Brought my iPad to the Valley Fair store. They refused to exchange it because the light leak was "within acceptable levels." Also, they said that you can only exchange once, then you have to return it.

This is my 6th or 7th iPad at this point. The varying policies at stores really annoys me. I'm about ready to call it quits.

Same happened to me, call and they will send you a new one. Complain and say its frustrating and they'll have you talk to a senior product specialist.

I hate calling to get a new one since it takes so long to receive it. I guess that's my only option now, though.

Well you can have them call your local apple store and tell them to replace it for you. The senior product specialist did it for me the third time and although the geniuses weren't happy about it they replaced it anyway.

I actually did this once. The Apple Store refused to tell the specialist whether they even had any replacements at all.

It's really hit or miss.

New ipad 2 On left....little backlight bleed and warm white vs previous ipad 2 on right with a nice cool white with a lot of backlight bleeding.

Which one to keep?

I don't think it's so bad. I've seen a lot worse and if it doesn't show with normal usage, I wouldn't worry about it. You probably wouldn't have even noticed it if it hadn't been for these threads. :)

you think that display wasn't so bad?! who cares if you've seen worse. what does that have to do with him getting a defective display?

we're going to have to declare you as legally blind.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I would keep the one with more bleeding because its clearly a brighter and better screen. I bet if you were to make the one with bleed to have the same level of brightness (eyeing it, cause 100% on the left is not the same as 100% on the right) it would have a similar amount of bleed as the one on the left.

Please report back, I'm curious what your decision will be and if they have a similar amount of bleed when they the brightness is "fairly" adjusted for the one with bleed.

EDIT: But if the bleeding is still really bad with adjusted brightness AND you watch lots of movies in the dark and its distracting to you, then I would choose the one with less bleed.

Is the 'cool white' one a lot brighter? I don't mean the bleed; I mean in general viewing.

Three for three. Either I have seriously bad luck or this is happening on most iPad 2s.

Notice that the bleeding is affecting the video as well.

I really don't know what to do now. Even this last retail swap was very difficult (I went from 64gb verizon white to 64gb at&t white because they didn't have any 64gb verizon whites anymore) and I got the same genius who looked seriously annoyed. She was nice, but her attitude was basically "either live with it or return it." Plus I have to go back there again because I was stupid and didn't deactivate the data plan on the first iPad (and I don't know the ESN). I kind of want to try going to another apple store, but I don't know how they'll react to my situation. :( :( :(

I don't know if I returned that third iPad 2 or got another exchange. I think I did something like 4 exchanges before I gave up and just returned the damned thing. Then I got an itch to get one again so I got another one 2 weeks ago and it also had terrible backlight bleeding. Exchanged it today and it actually looks not that bad. I think this is my 7th iPad 2 or something like that. 7th time's the charm? The serial number starts off with DN6FR btw. Good luck to everyone in their quest to find an iPad that does not bleed :)

I dont know if its brightness...its really warm white vs cool white even though the cool white is pretty bright ONLY in white backgrounds, websites, etc.

The warm white seems yellowish white...i dont know if this is acceptable or if i should exchange?

Should I post more pictures up?

i bought my iPad2 on ebay but got the screen problems like patches of light coming out of the bottom and a big path close to the top-right corner.
will i be able to exchange this at any apple store?

Three months in and new iPad's from the factory are still shipping with bleed. You might as well all save yourselves the angst by getting a refund and waiting for iPad 3.

Irrespective of what AppleCare reps say, this isn't getting fixed anytime soon and if it did, who wants to wait until month 9 or 10?

someone who is even thinking of waiting for iPad3 and who can guarantee that iPad3 won't have any light bleeds

This thread really is a dire state of affairs, and Apple is laughing all the way to the bank! Months later this problem is still not solved.

You've paid a lot of money for something, something that's a luxury not a necessity, you're not going to die if you are without it for any amount of time, and everyone is just settling for such rubbish screens. This sends a great message to them, "hey we'll buy any old sh** you churn out, keep it coming". Its a great product, but the screens...

Apple really has reached God like status, where people accept these defects and hand over more and more cash like mindless sheep. I guess that's how they got to being worth $200 billion... and just because they are all defective doesn't make it "within acceptable limits"... as a customer and someone with EYES i will be the judge of whats within acceptable limits thank you very much Apple!

What happened to 'customer is always right'... I've had a lot of Apple products pass through my hands lately, and their quality has nose dived. Sitting in the board room though looking at such massive sales figures, going up and up, they probably don't care...

If they don't fix it, I don't buy one to replace the one I returned. I'm not asking for perfection - just something without big white blobs in the dark.

Ok people....months later you seem to not get it. Most if not all iPads have this "bleeding screen"! If you purchase one, more than likely you will have it. You can be indignant and shocked at how Apple has put out a product with this issue! Bottom line, it's there. For the people who do not have this issue, it's perchance. This thread has turned into an almost laughable hodgepodge of ipad sherlocks searching for the holy grail. I mean you have come up with theories on certain numbers and codes to follow this holy grail for the perfect screen. On occasion, some clueless person walks into the store and gets one of these 'perfect' screens and post the pic...the rest of you drool over how such a rare diamond has been found. You sniff the box to see if it smells different. You lick the screen to see how it taste. You look at it from all angles to see how this special one has been found. Personally, it is to the point that this thread is one big show. Keep entertaining folks....you all should have oscars lol!!!

I have seen two variants of a 'cool' color temp, the first being what I understand to be an LG panel, and the second being either a variant of Samsung or some other panel that is very similar in all other respects other than color. The LG by my recollection had a brighter backlight. If it is the LG, that's one advantage to consider with the bleeding model. If it's one of the other panels, I'd say you should eventually be able to get an exchange that has similar color with less bleed. On the other hand, it may be difficult to get one that is low bleed, cool temp, and no dead or stuck pixels, with uniform backlighting. Is the warmer screen really yellow? The pictures make it look that way but I'm wondering how yellow it looks to you?

My screen has it in a few spots...worst being along the bottom screen bezel.

I may take some pics before I ultimately exchange it via AppleCare.

It's annoying and visible at half brightness (while viewing the "right" content) but not enough to go through the return process yet.

I think my rev was in the bad White Verizon batch though.

Turns out mine has some bleed, but it's unnoticeable during normal viewing in either light or dark environments. If I crank the brightness, state at a completely black background and tilt the screen to extreme angles, I can make out some bleed in the bottom left corner.

So I think I'm keeping this one. No dead pixels, the screen brightness is nice and uniform and the unit shell is flawless. I think that most of you guys are a little too OCD for your own good.
