does it bother you when you use it? i mean if you use backlight at around 30-40 percent can it be seen? if it bothers you then try to get it replaced but if you don't notice it while using it then just keep it because you might get something worse

If it wasn't for that big spot on the bottom, I would probably keep it, but even when the brightness is only at 30%, I can still see it. I guess I'm just going to take a little trip to Microcenter, and have it replaced.

Ok, here's my story.

I bought my iPad 2 WIFI 64GB on the release day in belgium. (end of march).
When I turned it on for the first time I noticed the light bleeding immediately.
I have been waiting until today because I was hoping they would resolve the issue. But if i'm not mistaken Apple has not taken any action to resolve it?
Are the new batches better? Or is it still like playing the lottery?

I've bought my iPad at a Mediamarkt store. I really hope they will exchange it. But I don't know how they will react on this. Are there any people on these forums that successfully exchanged their iPad at a Mediamarkt store?

Here's a picture of the amount of light bleeding.
I notice the bleeding almost always. Only when there are really bright colors on the edges of the screen it is not noticeable. It's already visible with brightness at 10%-20%.

Picture taken with brightness at 100%.

Alright, I think I got a keeper! This is my third iPad 2 and I think I finally got one I'm ok with. It has almost no light bleed at all, and absolutely none in the sweet spot, which is great. No dead or stuck pixels that I can find either!

I think it is one of the warmer panels, which I'm fine with, I like warm screens. Only defect I can find is some slight yellowing around the screen edges when showing white. Is this glue? It was a brand new shipment. Even if it isn't glue and it's permanent I'm fine with it. I would much rather have that then backlight bleed or dead pixels! Cheers to finally being able to enjoy an iPad!

Serial number DN6G2 for those keeping score.

So I went back today to exchange my ipad.
The first reaction I got was:
Liiiight bleeeeeeeding.... Never heard of...
I was expecting that reaction and they saw that I didn't appreciated that kind of response.
A second Apple seller came to me and after I said I knew about how large this problem was for Apple he acknowledged the problem.

The seller said I was the first one who came back to exchange the device but that it wasn't a problem and they would replace it.
Because i bought it more than 90 days ago I have to wait a couple of weeks because they have to send it to Apple. But I would get a new one.

Let's hope that I get one without light bleeding! (and that the large scratch i made on the screen is gone :))

Hi all!

When I took my iPad2 in a couple of weeks ago to have them look at the light bleeding on mine, the Genius knew exactly what I was referring to. He told me that "all of them have it" and attempted to compare an in-store one to mine. You couldn't tell any difference or even really see the bleed at 50% in the store (lighting is way too bright), so I asked if we could go somewhere with less lighting. We went to the broom closet. As soon as the room dimmed, you could see it immediately at 50% - on BOTH panels.

They swapped it out for me and my second one is better I think. The funny thing is that he showed me that there was an actual item in the "reason" for the return. It referred to light bleeding/leaking.

I think he knew full well there was light bleeding from the get-go. I think he was just trying to do his best to convince me to not make initiate a return and instead just "live" with that I had.

My black 16gb ipad2 made on 23 week in June and he have very small backlight from left (long) side. It's np for me and I have fun :)

Sorry for quality, use my iPhone cam

Why don't y'all just return your iPad 2s, get a refund, and wait a couple of months and buy the iPad 2+/3 which will probably have the light bleed issue solved or greatly reduced? The never-ending exchanges discussed here is ridiculous. Don't you people value your time??

I agree, this is exactly what I've done.

This luck of the draw is pure BS. Anyone who lets people try and persuade them that this is an acceptable quality deviation is a complete fool. These geniuses are just screwing around with you and lying through their teeth saying that no one else has complained, it's not a known problem, etc.

I really hope for another redesign, at least in assembly, this year - however unlikely it may be - because I really do want an iPad, but I'm not about to play such a juvenile game with Apple. Otherwise, this is an amazing product - hell, I'd even live with a scratch on the back if it meant an acceptable screen!

People value their hard-earned money. Why does it bother you that someone would take the time to find an iPad to their liking?

Maybe because he/she has got massive amounts of investment on Apple stock & wouldn't want anything to have any potential effects on its earnings?

I have spend thousands of dollars on Apple products
- Ibook G4
- 2 MacBook Pro's 13"
- 1 MacBook Pro 17" (3300 euros)
- 2 cinema displays
- iMac
- Time Capsule
- iPod Classic
- wireless keyboard and magic mouse
and never had any problems or returned any products

and now an iPad 2
I think I've got the right to exchange my iPad with the crappy screen. Apple has made enough money out of me ;)

I hope everybody with light bleeding goes back to an Apple store and exchange their iPad. So Apple learns that quality is important for their customers and that they should solve the problem.

I don't think you guys are taking what we are saying the right way (well, at least what I am saying). It's not right what Apple is doing by even sending these things out like this. You have every right to exchange it, but we don't see it as being very productive. It would make more of a statement to Apple if people simply returned them en mass and waited until the issue of assembly and design (because that's exactly what it is) is solved.

This hit or miss game is exactly that- a game - and I would think people have more valuable things to do with their time than playing roulette with a product whose presently designed and assembled to pump out sub-par displays. I REALLY wanted an iPad 2 (seriously- was YEARNING for it to replace all of my mobile needs- to be honest, I never wanted an electronic device as bad as an iPad 2). I was pissed to have to return it after receiving one with bleed and waking up at 3:30 to order. Just don't think the exchange game is worth the inconvenience with the odds stacked so out of favor.

Pretty stupid suggestion to be honest when there likely won't be another ipad this year

I have experienced a little bit of backlight bleeding but it isn't clear and isn't a big issue for me. Will just keep mine the way it is.

You're partly right. I see people on these forums exchange their iPad 5 times or more. And I think that they should just ask their money back. Those people are never going to be happy with the iPad 2 they'll get today.

I bought mine on the release day. And aside from the fact that I got an iPad with serious bleeding (see my picture a few posts above), I did not return it. I was going to sell it on Ebay when there were rumors of a release date for the next iPad.
That was until I made a large scratch on the screen. I don't want to sell a device witch scratches on the screen to somebody. And when you put it in the description of the device people aren't gonna buy it or not gonna give a decent amount of money for it. So that was the reason I decided to exchange mine, hoping to get a device in mint condition without light bleeding...

But the point is. Everybody has to decide for themselves how many times they want to replace their device. Let them decide how to fill in their free time...

I don't understand. You're selling your iPad on the basis of a mere rumor that a new model is coming? I'm not exactly sure why people would want a 2011 iPad HD anyway considering it'd be kind of a hackjob to use an A5 with it (or a 'Kal-El' if Apple were to go quad-core, as there is zero indication they have a quad core CA9 in the pipeline).

I'm not selling it now. And I think I will not sell it for just a small screen resolution bump. But when we approach a new iPad release, everybody on this forum will know it and will have a good idea of what the new hardware will be. That's the point to decide whether or not to sell and get the new one.

I think that most of us who read these forums are very knowledgeable about Apple products, but I have friends with iPads who never heard of backlight bleeding and have never noticed it on their iPads. I have not enlightened them. I figure if they are happy with it, leave them alone. So, I guess most consumers aren't even aware.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest. I'm questioning the rationality of going through multiple exchanges, hoping for a different result each time. You know that's the definition of insanity, right? If you really value your hard-earned money, get a refund and wait for Apple to get it right. Why would you waste your "hard-earned" money on something that is defective? And why would you continue to throw good money after bad, assuming you put a value on your time, when there is no reasonable assurance that an exchange will result in a better product that is free of defects?

It doesn't sound like you read a word I said. I'm not questioning your right to exchange, I'm questioning the insanity of doing one exchange after another without any reasonable assurance that you are going to get a better product. Apple has not acknowledged the problem officially, so it officially does not exist. If Apple is making no efforts on their end to fix this problem - and judging by the list of serials it doesn't appear Apple has done anything - then why on earth would you continue to engage in endless exchanges INSTEAD of just getting a refund (get BACK that hard earned money) and wait for the problem to be resolved either in the current or next generation?

I suppose if you don't mind the endless runaround, that's fine, but since this is a discussion board where we voice our opinions, I think it's silly for people to be behaving in this irrational manner. Spend that time with your family, friends, pets, whatever... why get so emotionally invested in a little gadget? But that is my opinion.

And it's somehow less "stupid" to suggest customers go through one exchange after another, each time hoping for a unit better than the last one you had, and knowing full well that Apple has not acknowledged the problem, has not fixed a problem it won't acknowledge even exists, and knowing that every time you exchange, you are basically just rolling the dice in terms of what you're going to get?

Yes, my suggestion to get a refund (make a statement to Apple) and wait for a better iPad is completely stupid compared to the above behavior, which you seem to be championing. Uh huh.
