I ordered my iPad2 on launch day. When it finally got here, I noticed that it had pretty bad light bleeding. I held out trying to tell myself it wasnt that bad but every time I watched a movie (especially in letterbox) it drove me nuts.

I went to the closest Apple store last week and showed it to the junior genius who said he didnt see a problem and I asked him to take it in the back with dim light and he would see it. He said he would swap it one time only. I told him that I knew people around the world are having to try like 5 or 8 replacements to get a good one. He said thats not the policy anymore and if I didnt like the replacement I would have to get a refund. I said that if I did that then Id just buy another one. He reply was "then we wont support it". I thought to myself 'what an idiot'.

I removed the invisible shield from front and back and took my iPad home. (20 minute drive). I put the replacement screen and rear case protector on it, let it dry and then turned it on. I shouldn't have put the skin on the iPad..... this one was much, much worse. You could actually see the screen bleed on the right side of the dock!.

I got frustrated and went to a different apple store (30 minute drive) and this time I brought a photo of the screen on my iPhone.

I happen to have the store manager approach me and ask if he could help me. I told him what the previous store said then showed him the photo on the iPhone. His only response was "thats a bad screen!". He said he would take care of it, and they did swap it with not a single question.

I asked them to check it before they brought it out, and there was very minimal light bleed, so I just resigned myself to live with that. I plugged in the cable and spotted a small ding in the case! Granted it was super small and I was thinking of just keeping it, I knew it would drive me nuts so another 30 minute drive it was.

The genius looked at it, and saw the ding but said they didnt have any more to swap. She completed the repair order and said that she would check with a store that was 15 minutes farther away. (45 minutes from home).

After getting to that store, I went through the whole story and asked that they check the ipad before bringing it out. She came back and said that she had 3 sets of eyes looking at it in the dark and it was a good unit.

I got it home and found that she was right. Zero, nada, none..... no light bleed at all.

WHEW! 4th time was a charm for me. Put ghost armor on front and back..... it only cost me a day of time, $40 in gas, and the original cost of the iPad to get one that was right.

I even sent an email out of frustration to sjobs@apple.com (not like its gonna get a response, just made me feel better).

I suppose if you don't mind the endless runaround, that's fine, but since this is a discussion board where we voice our opinions, I think it's silly for people to be behaving in this irrational manner. Spend that time with your family, friends, pets, whatever... why get so emotionally invested in a little gadget? But that is my opinion.
+1. As Albert Einstein once said:
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

You're a little bit overreacting.
First of all, I'm not the one who's exchanging his ipad over and over again. I did it once and that will be it. It was for a scratch I made on the screen. I'm just hoping it will have less or no light bleeding when I get one back.
And as I said before. Let those people decide what to do with their free time.

You're wasting a lot of time in this topic to say that people are silly wasting their time exchanging iPads.

... Spend that time with your family, friends, pets, whatever... why get so emotionally invested in this topic and what other people do with their time?

This discussion is leading us nowhere...

It doesn't bother me in the slightest. I'm questioning the rationality of going through multiple exchanges, hoping for a different result each time. You know that's the definition of insanity, right? If you really value your hard-earned money, get a refund and wait for Apple to get it right. Why would you waste your "hard-earned" money on something that is defective? And why would you continue to throw good money after bad, assuming you put a value on your time, when there is no reasonable assurance that an exchange will result in a better product that is free of defects?

Apparently it does but whatever.

I posted in the thread some time ago saying I didn't notice any bleeding, well, that's changed. I certainly wasn't looking for the problem, but recently while playing a widescreen video with black bands at the top and bottom), I saw the light bleeding through VERY noticeably.

If the device is held in portrait position, you can see the light coming through at the 1 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions. I didn't notice it until recently, does it change over time?

It's only noticeable with a black image on-screen, but it's a little annoying when watching a wide-screen movie. I don't intend to take it back (I doubt they'd accept it here, and I don't think the replacement would be any better).

i am now on my 4 ipad whit light bleed problem. yeey. this was not as bas as nr 2 and 3. it was a keeper BUT it had some problems with the screen when going out of sleep:(

now i get an brand new ipad 32 gb black and i hope its OK. i wilol keep it if it not worse then nr 1 and 4. .

the reseller is saying that almost every ipad has this problem:( i am tired of thiss ****

Very sad Apple has done nothing to solve this issue. I expected no less. why would they fix it? they did not fix the antenna issue on the iphone4.

I just got my second iPad and no nicks in the aluminum this time, but a couple bad spots of backlight bleeding.

I'm not going to keep doing this, just getting my money back this time.

Serial: DMQG2

Bad bleeding, i am so glad i got an advanced replacement, the only reason i replaced was because of a graphics issue, the good news is my next replacement will be a white retail box :)

Here is the 2nd iPad I got. It was MUCH worse that the first. (#4 was perfect though).

I outlined many of the stronger lights to show them where I saw the worst bleeding. (on the invisible shield)

You confuse my ability to have an opinion with your inability to understand that it is possible to make an observation without being emotionally invested in the outcome. I know that concept can be difficult to understand for some people.

And the iPhone 4 antenna issues were made very public by Consumer Reports Magazine. It took that much bad press for Apple to come out and make a statement. What major media outlet has put any public pressure on Apple regarding this bleeding issue? None.

Also, people here should know that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 suffers pretty badly from screen bleed too. And those obviously use Samsung LCD panels. So this is not a problem that was unique to LG panels. It's happening all over the place and has everything to do with design compromises made in order to get these things so thin. LCD panels are extremely sensitive to pressure, twisting, bending, etc. Super thin tablets like iPad and Galaxy Tab have sacrificed rigidity for svelteness. That comes with technical issues.

You're arrogant too. ;)

My Friends 32GB Black he purchased today: DMPG2

P-(2-Macdude2010's Friend-Good)

thats as good as my new one looks.

i can't express how much better the ipad looks w/o light bleeding. once you have one that doesn't have it after having one that does, there is an EXTREME difference and satisfaction...
