That is not my problem. I will simply go and buy a new one. Hence returning the current one.

Failure to act at this stage will make your future argument weaker.

For me, a 600 quid investment, at minimum, requires a screen fit for purpose. If for example my 1k+ macbook did the same, that too would have gone back in a shot.

It didn't and it is fit for purpose. I wanted to say porpoise but I resisted. Awww crap, I didn't :D

Well I'm on number three and I have to say for the most part that the Apple store I have been dealing with has done a great job in trying to make me happy. The unit I have is pretty minimal but I am of the mind when I spend money for something that is brand new I expect it what I buy to work correctly.

For me, my iPad 1 has worse backlight bleeding than either of the two iPad 2s I've seen so far. So when my iPad 2 turns up (who knows when) if the bleeding is no worse, it will be a non-issue for me. It may well be a non-issue for most but I can only speak for myself.

Of the two iPad 2s I've seen, one is being returned and the other one isn't. It does seem that there is no point returning yet though?

I was in the Apple shop today and they have a record on their system saying which model numbers are affected so the more people that take them back in the more chance we have of apple realising/admiting that this is a wide spread problem and not just 1 or 2 batches. Mine is going back to tesco tomorrow and will be buying direct from apple when they can provide me with a perfect unit.

Ok so lets assume that Apple takes steps to remedy this issue in a month or so and we start hearing of new iPads without a hint of backlight bleed. What's going to happen when there is a rush from those who care not to have a 500 plus tablet that has annoying bleed? Are we to expect a happy handover (OK that sounds a bit weird but you know what I mean) of brand new iPads?

I think most people will either not notice or they won't care. I'm sure the number of iPads being returned for backlight bleed is minimal in proportion to those sold. Same thing with MacBook pro displays. The majority of people just don't care or don' t need perfect displays.

So, apple not only counts on people not returning , but is also very happy to take care of those who do complain. I've had amazingly good experience complaining to Apple - once they upgraded me from a 15" mbp cheapest configuration to a 17" most expensive configuration just because I wasn't happy with the quality of the 15" display. I'm sure most people found the display fine, but rather than tell me that I was wrong, apple bent over backward to make me happy.

I think most people with serious light bleed who complain will be taken care of to th best of apple's ability or offered a refund if they aren't happy.

Just got mine swapped out today. The genius said that it affects all of them but mine was pretty bad so will swap it and see if I get one that has it less than the previous one.

He said that it's been there since the first iPad and there is no fix as of yet for it and he doesn't think there will be a fix anytime soon for it because it has been there since the first iPad.

Not even going to check if this one is any better ( Well not going to go look for backlight bleed if I see it while using it normally I will know but if it doesn't show up during normal use I don't care if it's there or not)

I've never seen this problem in any of my Apple products. The ASUS gaming laptop has it a little (in the lower left corner) on a completely black background but as has been discussed how often does anyone use a completely black background?

I also am not that picky about my gear. If it works I use it. If the display was washed out and dull I would really notice. Of all the iPads we have at work, I don't think I've noted this issue.

I'm glad Apple is taking care of those users who deem it a problem.

Cheers,

I cannot imagine Apple being willing to replace thousands of iPads for backlight bleed.

They might only replace the ones they determine 'bad', while other iPads with minimal bleed will be 'in spec' and not be replaced.

Apple is trying to figure this out as we're reading this forum.

Either they happily replace or risk bad press and possibly a class action lawsuit. This is not an isolated issue, so wait until a lawyer gets hold of this....

I'm glad I found one acceptable to me. I'd rather not have it show up at all. Ya I'm one of those crazy types who sometimes changes the brightness to a higher setting. When I do it's there but the iPad experience trumps a crappy LCD screen. My gut feeling the only fix we might see is the iPad 3 but we'll see.

I guess you do realize that the majority of iPad owners is happy with their iPads. Of course if the light bleeding is too much, then the iPad should get replaced, but I believe that the whole issue is becoming bigger than what it really is.

People who use black background are the same people who want Linux on the ps3. Lol, saying that as rare of a possibility it is, it's still a possibility that someone wants it...and that's enough for a movement.:)

Edgelit/Backlit Monitor Screens

Ok, yes, I understand that Edgelit = Backlit, but Backlit <> Edgelit. All I'm asking is where is it specifically indicated that the iPad is using edgelit lighting or what?

Hugh, I think the point is that to make a device as THIN as the iPad 2 there is no other way to do it than "edgelit". It's what FITS, you know? Can't put one LED behind the center and shine it like a projector! I don't think Apple has to go into all this explanation in their description of the screen since the term "backlit LCD" covers it (as the video shows VERY well).

That's usually the case on these forums.

I'm sure they are very happy. So what?

I'm right next to apple headquarters in Cupertino and I hear a completely different story from what most people are saying "is within spec", because apparently apple headquarters doesn't believe it's within spec. I was called a couple days ago from a fellow that works at apple (in Cupertino, not outsourced) to ask me how my iPad was doing because they have a file of me having to replace my unit multiple times. After a couple of email exchanges and phone calls to this rep, I sent him the pictures of my previous units (all in a sunlit room at 50 percent brightness with screen bleed) I explained my latest one isn't as bad as my previous ones so I was ok with it. He assured me that the new replacement one that he's sending me is "100 percent perfect with no bleed or flaws" so...it's shipping put today...I'll be a little pissed if it says it's shipping from china.

LightBleeding

Ya... I guess I have LightBleeding as well - AT FIRST... I was trying to give the iPad the Benefit of the doubt and for the first few days I was assuming (and hoping) that it was the Glue Residue not fully dried. Nop. This is what Mine looks like.

ALSO - Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this issue. During a Facetime call, I am getting a lot of clicking and popping sounds from the Speaker. The other person I'm FaceTiming, got his iPad 2 the same day as me. Actually, right behind me in line. We're both experiencing it.

It seems that with anyone I FaceTime with on the iPad 2, I am getting those noises. Whenever I FaceTime with my iPhone 4... everything is fine. One more thing I almost forgot to mention. If we 'video call' each other with Skype on the iPad 2... everything is fine.. no noises or anything

So the only issues I'm having with the iPad 2 is - LightBleeding and some Strange Noises coming thru the Speakers during a FaceTime Call.

i was really hoping by now people would be saying they are getting ipads without light bleeding. Still waiting for that before I take mine back and swap it.

Like many of you, I'd be a little miffed about the light bleed. I'd also bet a bazillion bucks that Apple is silently addressing the problem and that within 30-60 days it'll be a non-issue. At that point I would take mine back and swap, especially as it's likely that word will have spread throughout the various forums. Since you have a one year warranty, just wait it out. Look at the units that people are getting as replacements- they also seem to be affected. Why settle for a lesser problem? Apple will rectify it.

It has been an issue since the first iPad, I would have thought if Apple could fix it they would of by now?

regarding the pictures, return that unit for an exchange, I had one that looked terrible, maybe even worse. My replacement looks much better, so much so that it hasn't impacted my use in any way. I realize it's not perfect, but I am ok with it. The Apple genius said it's a known issue, etc, no hassle at all. They even gave me a new full 14 day return window on the exchange unit.

That's why I think if this issue bothers you a FULL REFUND is the smartest move. It shows the importance of this issue to Apple and frees you up to try a new one later down the line.

Your year long warranty may not help if they decide to call this problem "within spec"... and we've already heard of some employees using just this wording.

Don't ya hate the term "in spec"... ? :p

I only received my ipad2 last night, and went and checked one black image on my screen, and found no noticeable bleeding what so ever. I am very happy to say. :)

Got mine replaced last night, got it home, was ten times worse.

Took it back this morning, and swapped again, is hard to spot light bleeding in a well-lit room like the apple store, so I will see how it looks tonight, and if it is still bad, will hold out for a month or so until we hear it is fixed.
