There will never be a fix for this, unless you count iPad 3 as a fix.

They did not do anything on iPad 1, so what makes you think they will do so on iPad2?. Further more, if they announce a flaw on the LCD screen on iPad2 imagine how many would reclaim a fixed version, never gonna happen. Did you ever see a fixed iPhone 4?
So much misinformation and cluelessness above. Every manufacturer (including FoxConn who builds the iPads) makes tweaks and improvements to their manufacturing process. And virtually none of those changes ever get publicized.

When the issue is resolved, there will be no fanfare. No admission of anything being wrong that has subsequently been fixed.

I to have backlight bleed on mine, and are far from happy with it, but seems like what you see is what you get.

What I can't understand is why they are able to make an iPod lcd screen flawlessly, that are even thinner than the iPad. I speak of experience as I have an iPod with no faults what so ever,,, yet..
More cluelessness abounds. Your firsthand experience is an infinitesimally small sample size as to be completely irrelevant to everyone but yourself.

Last time I wrote about my iPad2 I was farely ok with it, and I still am, but I also still believe it is sad that Apple are getting away with this. How many mistakes can they make before people stops buying their products.

I have also thought about exchanging mine, but it seems pointless, as every single one of you who have tried, never have had an exchanged version with zero flaws,, yet.

You are free to live with a flawed device, but making up claims about "never being fix" only serves to make you feel better about settling for that flawed device.

No matter where you go.... no matter what you do... no matter how many swaps....

Been a long time lurker...compelled to finally sign up.

I'm currently waiting for my second replacement. After swapping out yesterday and finding just as many leaks as I had on my first one, I'm now waiting for iPad number 3.

Not sure how long it will take but I just can't part with $800 and learn to live with light leaking from the edges. Not even for $200. :(

Hoping third time will be a charm. Will let you know how it goes.

thank you for all the constructive criticism <- hint, sarcasm

If you took the time to read my earlier post's in this thread you would see that I exchanged 5 iPad 1 earlier last year, and ended up with none. And decided to wait for iPad 2. One of the exchanded iPad 1's was due to major Backlight Bleeding, the others had it to, but at a far less dregree.

As for my iPod compare. Show me one image of an iPad 2 with zero bleed and I'll withdraw my statement. I at least have one flawless iPod, never seen a flawless iPad 2 yet. Seen many flawless iPods on the net, and on friends iPods.

And as for a fix regarding iPad 2, you are right about one thing and that is if it is done, it will be done quietly. Just as it was on iPhone 4, oh I forgot, the iPhone 4 didn't have any flaws, it just needed a rubberband, and then everything was fine. Nice fix by the way.

If you search the net, or youtube for that matter, you will see just as many iPad 1 with the same faults. Where is the fix on that ?

But I'll look forward to see an iPad 2 with zero bleed, and when that happens, I'll use my warrenty to get a new one, as it from that point on can be proved as a defect.

It's not so much feeling better as it is that no one has posted a picture of one in a dark room on a dark screen that showed no bleed whatsoever at all.

So really, the option it to live with it (easy to do if you only notice it when doing that dark room test like me, not reasonable if you're noticing it during normal usage) or to return it and do without an iPad 2 as it seems that everyone has some level of bleed when doing that test.

They are holding one from the next shipment for me.

Hope you get a good one. I phoned Apple Care earlier today and they said they would send me one that had been tested to not show this problem but I would have to send mine in first then it would be 12 days before I got the replacement and it would be a refurbished one. If I wanted it quicker where they send the iPad first I would have to pay £69 for Apple Care.

So I just made an appointment at the Apple store tomorrow and if I can't get a tested one there I will get a refund.

I am yet to see *any* verifiable image of an ipad 2 without backlight bleed.

Every machine I have seen first hand, and that is a lot has it. Is there any lurker on here that is willing to post an image of their perfect ipad2 screen?

Conversely, my last ipad 1 had no bleed at all. None.

a known issue

I bought an iPad 2 last Friday from London Drugs in Vancouver. Noticed the backlight bleeding.

Today I bought two iPad 2's from Apple Store to see if one of them would be better (didn't want to exchange what I had in case I got a worse one). They were both worse than what I had.

Made a Genius appointment and took them back. The guy was helpful, looked at pictures I took and said it was definately a problem. Looked the issue up in a computer and said there was an official bulletin about the problem and they are looking into the issue. He said it instructs employees to replace if required but that replacements at this time are likely to have the same issue. If I wanted to keep the iPad, it would be no problem to replace anytime in the next year once the issue is resolved.

Tech support

Also called apple tech support, got transferred to senior tech support for iPad. They said there was a bad batch of iPads with light leakage issues. they are holding off on replacing right now until the issue is resolved and said to call back in 1-2 weeks. If they heard anying sooner, they'd call me (not sure I believe that).

So while the problem isn't likely to get the same media attention as antennagate, I think they are admitting it is a problem and will take care of it for anyone who comes to them with the issue.

Disappointed in quality control here, but satisfied with customer service.

Boy, I'm as OCD as the next guy, and I understand "voting with your wallet" and all of that, but I just can't imagine denying myself the fun of using an iPad because of an issue that's really only noticeable in very limited circumstances.

IMHO if you happen to get an iPad with the backlight bleeding issue lodge a complaint with AppleCare and swap your iPad out in a few months when the issue has (hopefully) been fixed. Going for exchange after exchange right now is an exercise in futility.

So I finally got my iPad 2 replaced today, and I can't say I'm fully satisfied.

- The Genius forgot about me after I was told to wait for him. Completely. I waited there until he stopped talking to a customer, approached, and he left, claiming his shift was over. Douche. Had to wait for another Genius to come to my aid (the box was there and ready to go the whole time!)

- Got the replacement, at a quick glance, looks okay, I'm happy.

- Get home, brightness at 100%, dark room, black background, and there is indeed some bleed. I expected there to be some bleed, and honestly, while it's not ideal it's fairly tolerable and I could have lived with it IF NOT...

- ...FOR THE SINGLE DEAD PIXEL CLEARLY LOCATED ON THE UPPER TOP HALF OF THE SCREEN.

- So now I'm running this pixel unsticking website that'll either a) do nothing b) unstick the pixel (assuming it's stuck, which is unlikely, it's probably dead).

I'm sick of going to the Genius Bar, but hey, looks like another trip will be made soon enough. I love Apple, am completely immersed in the ecosystem, product-wise, and I believe in what they preach regarding how tech should be used and how tech should be. Nothing is perfect, no company ships any product without defects, but I can't say I'm impressed with the quality control here. I realize a lot of units need to be pushed out, and just *maybe* that results in reduced quality control time in order to push them out as fast as possible, but Apple built its rep on "it just works", but I can't say that's the case right now.

I was one of those saying "don't worry, those who have problems will be heard, and those with no problems will not make a peep, so the problem is not as widespread as you might think". I still stand by that, and I don't think every iPad 2 has a manufacturing defect, but there's no doubt that Apple needs to address its manufacturing process for future iPad revisions to avoid the volume of iPad 2s going out with backlight bleed. This is not to say EVERY iPad 2 has backlight bleed; most LCDs have a certain amount of bleeding, even if it's very faint, I've accepted that and have come to realize this for a long time now. What is NOT normal is Apple telling people "wait 3-5 days for the glue to dry" because they can't make them fast enough; Cook, who's responsible for the supply relations and oversees manufacturing processes along with others, needs to without a doubt get iPad 2 production to ramp up much earlier than it did and to get better quality control in there.

The iPad 2 is a great product, but not all of us can experience it to its full potential with the defects we've got. Who knows, maybe we're within the norm for "bad models", maybe the number of "bad" iPads with bleeding, dead pixels, cosmetic blemishes is within the norm and considered acceptable. But doesn't mean it's not absolutely ****** to have to go through the process of getting 3, 4, or even 5+ iPad 2s to get a perfect one.

Or maybe we're too obsessive about this, probably because we expect perfection from Apple, which might be too much to ask for, no doubt, but hey, I've already said it all. :p

/long rant

Im 100% certain its that sponge gasket around the LCD panel they used to mount the glass to.

http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/OtgrusGS6MXm5tMA.huge

Ive fitted laptop screens and a raw LCD panel has a thin steal bezel and back if you press the edge the light bleeds through EXACTLY like what we are seeing here!

Apple has stuck on sponge sticky gasket on this then pushed it between the blackplate and digitiser in turn trapping the the panel tight in the device.

Problem is the gasket causes pressure around the LCD panel as its to thick or dense in places and makes the backlight bleed!

Apple SORT THE GASKET! and STOP giving me the wet glue excuse CRAP!!

Whos brave enough to remove the digitiser? I bet the LCD is 100% normal without the pressure of that on top!

Just been to the Apple store and the guy said there was a note on the system saying that it's the glue and wait a couple of weeks and the bleeding should go away. (Not sure if I believe that) but there was no replacements in stock and he would have to order one in and I'm going back down university tomorrow so wouldn't be able to get back over there. He said it doesn't go away in a few weeks they would swap it out for me when I brought it back.

Mine Fully Cleared Up. Some of the cases are Glue. I know mine was. It took about a week too.

Went to the Apple store to get mine replaced and they said that it wasn't that bad and that I'm taking the risk of getting a worse one if they did in fact replace it. Hmm. I'll post up a pic later, it seems pretty damn bad to me. The top right corner is the worse place affected, however I can only really see it in a dark room and on a black screen, which I don't do often. That seemed to also be Apple's justification for not wanting to replace it. Guess I'll just wait and see if they fix the issues in the next few months and get a warranty replacement then.

I've been using it for 1 week now and I still have it... Should I wait more? It's even visible at 0%..

If you seen any difference for the better over the week you already waited, I would give it a few more days. If not, shoot for an exchange. At least when you go in to take it back they can't tell you to wait a week.

I noticed a little bit on mine but doesn't really bother me on an all black/dark screen I've seen bleed on just about every single LCD I have ever looked at in my life. Guess this is just something that we have to expect when buying anything with a larger LCD. Now some is far worse than others and I think should be replaced/exchanged as I wouldnt be able to stand it.

My one has backlight bleeding problem and am taking it back today to get another and if need I will keep going back to get a prefect one. It will show Apple that they have to tell these manufacturing companies that the product has to be prefect or people will keep replacing them.

My has another problem of a line on the rear camera. So even if the backlight bleeding would go away the line on the camera wouldn't so being replaced.

Also when I am in am going to ask nicely for a leather smart cover for the stress of having a faulty iPad. Might as well if you don't ask you don't get.

Plus UK law says that the customer has the right to claim for costs of taking faulty products back. And if you think of the cost to Apple and the Apple markup on the Leather smart covers they would only be giving away around £20* product.

* Just a GUEST in the costing.
