My original iPad has light bleed and I JUST NOW noticed it.

What's the big deal? Do you guys really sit in a pitch black room with your iPad? I don't know, just seems like something incredibly minor to get all pissy over.

Playing words with friends I just noticed I have bleeding in two places on my screen. Very bottom and left side...that's it...two places. Do I risk trying to swap, considering it could be worse..?

no, its called a mancave. I hang out in there all the time with minimal lighting to do coding and regular computer work. There are no windows. The only light i get is from my monitors. So when my $300 dell monitor doesnt have any screen bleed, why should this? It bothers me that most people don't understand that others have different lives and we all don't bask in the suns glory 100% of the time. 90% of the time I'm in a dark room, I go out to buy food in the middle of the night...so i'm a night person. and yeah, it bothers me. does that answer your narrow question?:D

I see your point though, it gets irritating to see people complain about minor issues...hence why i'm returning mine today. I figure this much fuss over something can't be that good. To each their own.

For the rest of the crowd...keep fighting the good fight.

I'm right next to apple headquarters in Cupertino and I hear a completely different story from what most people are saying "is within spec", because apparently apple headquarters doesn't believe it's within spec. I was called a couple days ago from a fellow that works at apple (in Cupertino, not outsourced) to ask me how my iPad was doing because they have a file of me having to replace my unit multiple times. After a couple of email exchanges and phone calls to this rep, I sent him the pictures of my previous units (all in a sunlit room at 50 percent brightness with screen bleed) I explained my latest one isn't as bad as my previous ones so I was ok with it. He assured me that the new replacement one that he's sending me is "100 percent perfect with no bleed or flaws" so...it's shipping put today...I'll be a little pissed if it says it's shipping from china.

Let us know if it is indeed 100% perfect.

I just did a comparison of my iP1 and iP2 playing a movie off of Netflix. The bleed on the 2 is much more noticeable. Doesn't bother me so much, but its there.

You'll notice it when you play games with dark backdrops - like any space-based games and you'll notice it with any movies or videos with black bars on any side.... you'll notice it on your main wallpaper with it's dark borders and spacey planet theme... yadda yadda

You get the point - has nothing to do with a "pitch black room" or 100% brightness :(

then again, there's a difference between 'noticing' something and it having an actual influence on anything you do on the device.
just saying.

Strange, all the complaints about backlight bleeding, so far I have seen two iPad 2's and neither had the slightest amount of backlight - could it be that a second batch has this issue resolved?! Who knows.

Well it could come out of the box with huge scratches on the glass and theoretically that wouldn't stop me from doing the usual things on it either...

Whoops that sounded kinda weird

Well, I can notice the bleeding even at 0% and it influences when I watch movies and shows on my iPad (which is quite often).
Maybe there are some with light bleeding , and I have evens heard of a lot of people that it disappeared after few days of using it... Mine has now 1 week and still the same.

And believe me, it influences A LOT!!!!

I am not impressed with my iPad 2's light bleed issues.

I watch a lot of movies on mine, and the awful (especially along the bottom edge) light bleed is so distracting. When I get a chance, I will be taking mine back to my Apple store for a replacement, but it is a 150 mile round trip, so is a bit of an inconvenience.

The first pic is at 65% brightness:

The second image shows it doesn't really go away much as brightness is decreased.

This one is at 50% brightness:

Not so good, Apple

^ This is what mine looks like.

Mine looks almost the same. The bottom left corner when in portrait mode is very bad. I compared it to my wife's 32 GB white iPad 2, and mine looks horrible. Hers is near perfect.

I usually just deal with this stuff, but it's starting to bother me now.

I'm not exchanging mine YET as I do not want to get a worse one. In a few months I will give it a shot and by then MAYBE they wil have it resolved.

In my opinion, if you see one without bleed, your just not looking right, becuase its there.

I think I'm just going to get a refund on mine. I mostly watch films on it at night and it's just distracting when trying to watch a film.

If I could find one that didn't show it in low brightness I would be happy as I never have my iPad set at full brightness anyway.

That could very well be mine. Even at 10-20% brightness, two of the leaking areas are still visible.

That and the top corner came with a nice scratch. Oh well, back to Futureshop.

It is a damned shame because aside from the bleeding, the ipad 2 is a wonderful piece of tech. A screen like that tho, it really needs to be working properly. I remember a $3000 TV I purchased some years ago, a Panasonic. A single dead pixel, smack in the middle. That teeny little dot drove me mad :D

I agree it's awesome but if I can't watch a movie on it at night without being put off by the bleeding which was one of the main reasons I bought it then I don't see the point in keeping it. I'm going to the Apple store one last time and see if they can find me one that has been tested at least to not show bleeding with low brightness and if they find one I will happily take it as if it's only visible in high brightness that doesn't bother me.

If not I'll just return it and get a refund and probably buy another one at a later time if they fix the issue.

Very nice device. The speed boost of the browsing experience was immediately noticeable to me and the screen temperature was a perfect snow white (my first gen is much warmer).

And I'm not even opposed to some backlight bleed as it can be fairly common with LCD panels. My original iPad has it to a much lesser degree and was never an issue. I have two "hotspots" on the iPad 2 that are visible at 0% brightness.

I've decided that I am only exchanging it once since I just can't afford the time, effort, and anxiety of the swap-hope-open-dissapointment-swap cycle.

There will never be a fix

There will never be a fix for this, unless you count iPad 3 as a fix.

They did not do anything on iPad 1, so what makes you think they will do so on iPad2?. Further more, if they announce a flaw on the LCD screen on iPad2 imagine how many would reclaim a fixed version, never gonna happen. Did you ever see a fixed iPhone 4?

I to have backlight bleed on mine, and are far from happy with it, but seems like what you see is what you get.

What I can't understand is why they are able to make an iPod lcd screen flawlessly, that are even thinner than the iPad. I speak of experience as I have an iPod with no faults what so ever,,, yet..

Last time I wrote about my iPad2 I was farely ok with it, and I still am, but I also still believe it is sad that Apple are getting away with this. How many mistakes can they make before people stops buying their products.

I have also thought about exchanging mine, but it seems pointless, as every single one of you who have tried, never have had an exchanged version with zero flaws,, yet.

1. I never saw backlight bleed on ANY ipad 1 that went through my hands. My daily driver was perfect for example, as were all the other ones.
2. Apple are getting away with it (as you state) because you are not voting with your feet. Return, if we all did, they would quickly get the message.

Nothing to Fix

No reason to fix it. Small number of customers notice or care (relative to the massive number of items sold) and they will just keep replacing them for those folks who do.

Vast majority won't notice and/or don't care.

Cheers,

Read this whole thread.. add me to the list.

Had a 64GB at&t iPad 2 with significant leak visible while watching movies and while in iPhone apps. Apple has been awesome. Exchanged it. Was told they knew, was warranty issue and would be covered if I came back in months. I got my second one, a black 64GB at&t, and it had the same issues but not AS bad but still not good.. not good at all. Gave in and returned it. Agree that iPad, 1 and 2, is an amazing device. I just refuse to look at flashlights while I watch movies or even on a dark screen. Hope they resolve this soon as I really want it back.. great device.
