Returned my first ipad 2 to tesco a few days ago reserved one at apple to collect today. Opened it check for bleeding wasn't happy so they went and got me another, this was from a different batch number aswell, opened it same problem so they swapped it again this was the last 32gb in black in stock also a different batch number same problem so I took the refund. They guy said they have had a few returned due to this in the manchester store but they where all white models. I will now be waiting a month or so until I start seeing photos on here to confirm they have sorted the problem. If not then asus, samsung, motorola or some other company will get my money.

Tesco allow returns for this issue? I was thinking of taking it to apple and trying to swap it with them, and for another colour. Hopefully that will be possible.

Went to the Apple store to get mine replaced and they said that it wasn't that bad and that I'm taking the risk of getting a worse one if they did in fact replace it. Hmm. I'll post up a pic later, it seems pretty damn bad to me. The top right corner is the worse place affected, however I can only really see it in a dark room and on a black screen, which I don't do often. That seemed to also be Apple's justification for not wanting to replace it. Guess I'll just wait and see if they fix the issues in the next few months and get a warranty replacement then.

I wouldn't wait. There have already been cases of them telling people that the bleed is 'within spec' but people still got replacements because they are in the 14 day return period. Once those 14 days are gone, you are stuffed if Apple decides yours is acceptable in a few months when better batches start arriving.

Tesco will accept returns yes but apple will only order you a refurb unit as I already tried this a few days ago. Why would I want a refurb unit when I paid full price just 3 days earlier?

Apple gave me a new one in the box sealed when they replaced mine?

I always though if your within 14 days you will get a new one replacement if not it will be a recurs after the 14 days.

Yes they replace 3 for me today but they will only replace them with a new retail unit if you got it from apple to start with.

Returned my white att 3g 32 version to apple store today for bleeding. Could have swapped for a new white version, but asked if they can swap for a black one, they told me would be a few days, so I got a gift card, and will wait for the phone call....hopefully only is a few days this week.

Got a 3G 16gb black from Brighton store on Friday.

Opened up last night and didn't notice it, opened again today (been out all day) and notice a very slight bleeding when using the iPlayer app (black background)

Reading this I suspect it's probably best to wait it out and I'll send it back when Apple have admitted there is a problem and fixed it.

this may have been covered, but i don't want to go through 55 pages to find it.
what happens if you have a hardware issue like this, and you bought applecare, and you report the issue next year after the new iPad comes out?

That's true. As I'm still in the return time I am considering just returning it for a refund and buying another one, as they seem reluctant to exchange. Don't really want to go back in there again though, it's a 40 minute drive. My 14 day return window runs out next Saturday, I'm not sure what to do. I suppose I could just return it ASAP and buy another one in a month or so, I can live without it for now.

i was just curious. it's an hour 20 to the store for me, don't make that trip too often. i don't want to go if whatever they give me is not going to be better than what I already have, and i'm not going to make them open 10 boxes when there's people who don't even have one yet. i just thought if we waited a while that production would step it up. and isn't applecare supposed to be better service than the normal warranty?

You're real question is "Can I wait, take this back next year after iPad 3 comes out, and get a free upgrade?"

The answer is, no. While there are times Apple will replace your product with an updated newer model, (They actually replaced my Brothers '08 out of warranty Mac Pro with a brand new '10 model) you typically get what you've paid for. (IE another iPad 2.)

Can anybody verify if this is true? This might change whether I get my iPad 2 from Best Buy. If this is the case, I will get my iPad through Apple.com using the employee discount that my company has with Apple (trust me, it's not much of a discount).

I am holding out for the production batches that come out AFTER they resolve the bleeding issue.

Got my replacement yesterday, dead pixel, more bleeding (way worse than I initially claimed in my post from last night) – took it in today, Genius didn't even check for the pixel or bleeding and believed me right there. I've been there so many times for my iPad 2 (and a bad AEBS I had a while back, sheesh) now that I know who he is and he clearly recognizes me. :p :(

In any event, he flat out told me that Apple is in the process of addressing the "light leakage" (as they call it, I guess "bleeding" makes it sound worse than it is), and that he also owns an iPad 2 with minor bleeding in one corner, but that he can tolerate it.

Told me that he'd get tired of coming in to exchange all the time...which made me wonder: don't you work here dude? You can do that yourself if you wanted to, in all likelihood!

So I'm getting another one sometime this week, by Friday, and if this one has any bleeding or (God forbid) another dead pixel/cosmetic issue, I'll call AppleCare, open a case number with them and replace it down the line. My Genius Bar Work Authorization reads "Repeat Repair", so they know I'm in the system.

Just thought I'd share my experience. As always, top notch support from Apple.

I applaud you for your tenacity. I would be doing the same exact thing. Light bleed is not a minor issue...nor are dead pixels. I purchased Sony digital picture frames last year and had to keep returning to the store because many of them had light bleed. I would not accept it in a relatively cheap item costing 100 bucks, and I certainly wouldn't accept it in an 829 buck piece of consumer electronics that I would be using day in and day out.

Thank you again. It is because of you...and all those others...who rightfully expect a decent, quality, defect-free product...that Apple now has to step up and address the quality control issues.

My return period runs out on the 13th I will give it until then to see if the "Glue Dries" like the genius said. If it doesn't show signs of getting any better by then I might just get a refund and buy one at a later time when they are sorted.

The genius did said when they do fix it I would be able to exchange it anytime within my warranty though.

Don't bother waiting. This isn't a glue issue. The penius is well off the mark :)

Stick a beatnic in a blue t-shirt really does nothing. It is still a beatnic.

I have this in one corner..I stopped in apple store today and they said bring it in and we will exchange it..problem is..I hear people are getting units that are worse than the first one.
Are they replacing with refurbs or new units?

Thank you for the kind words. Much like you, and others, I hold Apple to a high standard, and we expect a high quality product every time because that's precisely how we've come to feel abou their products over the years. You built up trust, Apple, maintain it, please. :)

I just got off the phone with AppleCare about my light bleeding issue. The light leakage isn't so bad but it bugs me when watching a movie even at 50% brightness. I was told that my serial number was part of a bad batch and that I was eligible for a replacement but that they could not guarantee that the replacement would not have an issue. He told me that Apple is aware of this issue and is investigating it. I decided to hold on to mine for now but had him put a note on my account. He never once talked about glue drying.

I don't know if Apple will actually fix the issue but I felt better that they at least acknowledged that it is an issue.

got the same exact answer that is good news

....so in a way, all of you are returning and returning hoping for a "better ipad 2" are getting exactly what you deserve, right? Instead of waiting it out, you just have to have it now. Enjoy!

Okay, I have an exchanged iPad 2 that I said in a previous post was very minor and tolerable. After using it today, I am changing my stance on this, the light leakage is worse than I first realized. It's almost as if it has gotten worse over the last week. I'm sure this has been covered before, but it almost looks like it is coming from the areas of contact from using a smart cover. I realize lcds are not affected by magnets like old crts's but I am just stating what appears to be a change in light bleed over the course of a week of use. After reading many posts on this forum, it is obvious that an exchange is a total waste of time. My solution for now is, call AppleCare or go in to speak with genius, get it documented, get a commitment for a no questions asked replacement down the road, when/if the problem improves. I really like this device and love the improvements over the first gen., so returning for $ back for me at this point, is not an option... If it gets any worse, that to may channge.

There are people (Apple's apologists) over in the News section of MacRumors Forums (The new Apple ad..."We Believe" thread) that essentially say that the reported light bleed problems (and other quality control issues) are essentially a figment of everybody's imagination, and that 99 percent of all iPad 2s are defect-free.

Seems they don't spend much time reading over here.

Unbelievable that people can ignore such a widespread problem.
